I've been putting off dress shopping, because I'm terrified that everything will be so short unless it's custom.

    I'm 6'3" with a 37" inseam. Ugh...

Any recommendations on dress-makers who do good things for tall brides? I need le help!

Hi!  I'm tall as well :)  My dress is by Watters & they cater to tall brides!  The regular length worked perfectly for me (I'm only 6' though), but I had the option to order the "tall" size - I think it added at least 3 more inches.

That's fantastic! There were actually a few Watters dresses that I liked. I'll look through your blog posts for a picture of your dress. (Hope that doesn't sound too creepshow. lol)

Do you know if the tall added on length to the bottom or proportioned throughout it? (One problem I have with dresses sometimes is that the waist part is on my ribcage and the hips part is on my waist, so it's tight in the ribs and giant in the waist!)

Edit: That dress looks great. How tall were your shoes? I'm most likely doing flats/essentially flats, because my fiance is my height. (He says he's taller, but I don't agree Smile )

I also have a 37' inseam and purchased a Sottero & Midgley off the rack!  I could hardly believe it.  I am use to always ordering gowns and waiting weeks/months.  I am a little over 6 ft... there is an awesome gown just waiting for you!

I'm not sure about the length thing!  Mine was a dress suited for a destination wedding, but they have sooo many other styles.

    @tallgal That's amazing! I hope I have such luck.

My bridesmaids/moh all have the opposite problem. They are all 5'2", I kid you not.

I found a great Watters dress that i loved, but it was too short in the regular and they were going to charge me a HUGE add on to get it in the longer length (I'm also 6').  I ended up getting a sample Vera Wang gown and the length is PERFECT for me to wear 3 inch heels without any added on length.  I also had good luck in lengths with Lela Rose dresses. Good luck with your search!

I am not quite as tall as you, (I wish I were!) I'm only 5' 10", but many of the dress samples I tried were long on me.  I tried dresses on without any shoes.  I am going to wear low heels or flats because I was too cheap to have my dress made longer...I'll know for sure when the dress comes in, but I think I can only wear about a 2-3 inch heel.

Good luck - I'd love to see what you find!  I really reveled in my height when I was dress shopping because I felt that being tall helped me pull off a lot of bolder styles.  And it sounds like you are long-waisted, but in proportion to your height, since you have a 37 inch inseam.

@Wisco Bride- Yes, I am more long waisted than average people land, but it is in proportion pretty much. Smile (Though it looks like I'm super leggy because everything is so short on me). Thankfully I don't have my father's body. He's 6'8" and my inseam is 3 inches longer than his. He is definitely long-waisted. I'll make sure to post my finds! That is, as soon as I get the guts to go try stuff on.

@Wisco Bride- Another thing! I 800% agree that it's easier to pull off bolder styles. They work well (at least in regular fashion) on tall people. Smile

Hi 50 foot bride! Your icon is so cute! Im 5'11 and had some of the dresses sit weird on me like you were saying. But the dress that I did buy is perfect. Its an Allure. I guess you just have to watch with the different styles. I think mine is an A-line...but there were some Alfred Angelo gowns that I loved online but looked horrible on me! But I love my Allure gown I cant wait for it to come in! Good luck on your shopping.

    Hey,

I am 6ft with a 40 in inseam. I tried on Demetrios dresses that they were plenty long long with Maggie Sottero Destination dresses. Like you I was really nervous but it worked out well!  Most of them are long enough or can add a few inches. But most of them were perfect with no hemming up! Cheaper on the seamstress bill.

@ Firefighter_Prazs_Girl- Legs, girl! Lucky duck. :) Random question, but where do you find jeans/pants long enough? I can buy them from Banana Republic or Gap in Tall and a size bigger and wear them low-slung, but that barely works. :p

I wonder how Vineyard runs. I love these two dresses. (Madison and Cricket)

I also really like a few of the J.Crew dresses, but I know those will be too short.

That's my pants inseam but I'm only 5'11". I wore a Maggie dress off the rack, size 10 and it just barely dusted the ground. I wore flat sandals. Some dresses I tried on were really long while some were really stupidly short. Like mid-calf, haha.

However, almost any dress that you order (so off the rack may not be for you but definitely look as I know some i tried on were waaaay long) comes in extra lengths.

@ejs4y8- LOL. I'm sure I'll encounter some mid-calf ones. My mother actually suggested a tea length dress, and I vetoed that. If I wore one of those, everybody would be thinking "Aww, poor thing couldn't get a dress long enough." Wink

@ejs4y8- Oh I HATE that. I just want to punch those people in the nose. Even though I'm 6'3", I'll still rock 4 inch heels. My fiance loves it, and besides, nobody's going to ban me from Blahnik or Loub pumps! :p

    Amen, girl.

(Though I am wearing flats on the wedding day so pictures don't make me a giant).

Yeah, I get tired of the Amazon Lady comment. I'm so much taller than almost all his family that I stick out so much like a sore thumb. Height is not hereditary in my family.

I only wore flats becaue he's shorter than me! Only 1/2" but still, I didn't want to deal with the awkward lean/hug/kiss for our wedding portraits! Ah.

I'm from Cali, i say dude all the time by the way. It's ridiculous =]

@ejs4y8- I say dude constantly as well. One of my bffs and bms is from Laguna, and when she first met me she thought I was from CA. I don't have a southern accent, and apparently sound CAish. Smile

His mother is 5', so I have to waaaaay bend over for hugs. As if I'm not awkward enough! She's adorable though-- teeny and German with a VERY thick accent.

Thanks ladies! Rock those heels if you like them ...what the heck! I just cant walk in them thats my problem! LOL!

@ 50footbride....Im thinking maybe an offwhite, white wouldnt be bad. Heres what my dress looks like...dont mind my hair...the lady wanted me to pull it back to see how it would look up...but now i got my hair cut and im wearing it down!! LOL! I even seen some yellow shoes that I think Miss Sprinkle posted? They were cute and thought yellow would be fun but not too outragious. But offwhite or white would prob be my first choices. Thanks!

Ordering extra length isn't too much more expensive and is probably going to include enough extra fabric that you won't have to worry. Watters was mentioned; Allure also makes their dresses for 6', so the extra length will definitely cover you there.

@DM- That dress looks so good on you!

I've seen some really pretty ones recently that are white/off-white, but they're like 1.5-2" heels. :( I'm a sucker for a good pointy shoe.

For instance, these are so pretty!

    Here are some actual flats...

These are awesome, but it looks like (on amazon at least) they only have teeny sizes left.

@50footbride how awesome are you!! The 1st pair are so cute...and a size 11 is there but too much heel for me. The 2nd pair is ok but not my style. And the 3rd...I actually think the 2nd pair with the sandal looking strap are kinda cute! The funny thing is...I love butterflies...but not that much! Thanks for the links! Your awesome...and thanks for the compliment on my dress! my feet are big and picky so I think I might have to actually go out and try shoes on...you any stores in mind? Maybe Macys?

    :)

Definitely Macy's, J.Crew if you can wait until their spring line comes out, Neiman Marcus or Saks, and Nine West. Cole Haan makes a bridal line, but their only flat is a rounded ballet.

My feet are picky too. 10-11, but narrow. I swish around in so many shoes.

I also loved Jcrew dresses but they were SUPER short on me. I love heels also and I wear them Mr. FF is already flat footed at least 2 inches shorter then me. But he doesn't care. He loves it also.

I can wear lucky Jeans and some BKE that are at the Buckle I can wear. Other then that I am SOL! I always said if I became rich I was going to have a closet full of designer fashionable jeans but not only jeans but pants!

Yeah I was so excited about a Jcrew dress then reality hit me. Hello you have an inseam that never stops not happening. That is okay because I love my dress now. I have never heard of them. I really want some cute pants that aren't jeans but I just get depressed shopping. I have a hard time with long sleeve shirts they look like 3/4 sleeves on me. Where do you get your shirts?

Banana Republic, Gap, and Old Navy all carry tall lines that are made for tall girls, not just added on length. They're proportioned better, so sleeves don't suck, etc. They are only online, but what I'll do if I'm not sure about something is go to the store, try it on, then judge from there if I like it and want it to fit right.

    @everyone (lol)

I'm wearing these: http://www.shoes.com/p-ec1080507.shtml in white. I bought them at Neiman Marcus a long time ago....maybe Amazon.com now?

Also, I asked if some Jim Hjelm dresses came in longer busts (that cute bust style they got going on where there is definition between bust and chest?) well, they don't make it longer. Yep, one size fit all torsos.

    Here's a pic of my dress: http://pics.boards.weddingbee.com/37121.0395.jpg

So check! Lots of dreses come with a dropped waist like mine did.

    You look beautiful!

I'm kicking myself for not buying a pair of Blahniks that were on sale about 2 months ago at NM. They're gone gone gone now. They were turquoise, flat, patent, pointy pointy, and totally rocked. Very sad. I'd try to find them on ebay, but I'm too weirded out by wearing other people's shoes.

I'm 5'11" with a 35" inseam. I was also very nervous about finding a decent priced dress. I found my dress at Alfred Angelo. Every dress in the store is custom made for you. They take about 8 weeks to complete, but you can pay to have it expressed.

The sample dress was just long enough without shoes on, and extra length was only $50 extra!

All of their dresses can have length added. I highly recommend them!

I am nowhere being tall, but I had a Priscilla of Boston gown made and each gown is custom made and I noticed they also have gowns for tall girls. So, I would go in and take a look at those Vineyard dresses you like, they may work!
