Of all the things my Dr. warned me about, this was not one of them.
I'm not pregnant but I have read so much online about pregnancy and this is something I've never come across before.
I read about this, but it's very rare that it will cause miscarriage/stillbirth. The exposure has to be right at the right time for anything to happen, so it's not likely to happen. We've put a filter on our faucet.
Honestly, of all the things that scare me, drinking water doesn't scare me much. I say this as a woman who lost her baby due to an unknown reason at week 34. I'm petrified of everything with my current pregnancy.
Never heard about it and my doctor never mentioned it. I'm not worrying.
From what I understand, it's really, really rare. There's really only trace amounts of chlorine in your water by the time it reaches your faucet anyway (I think the amount of chlorine in typical tap water is like 7 parts per million, which is REALLY small).
If you have concerns, you should talk to your doctor, or you can just use a filter before drinking the water.
I just drink the water from our fridge. It goes through a filter and it tastes amazing :) In fact I rarely drink bottled water...usually only when I don't have another option.
We have really hard water. so aways put it through a brita filter even before I was pregnant.
The only issue in regards to water and pregnancy is well water and nitrates. If you have a well, you should be checking the water anyways. Nitrates dont affect adults but can lead to blue baby syndrome. Drinking municiple tap water is 100% safe.
We have well water, so I don't like the taste or smell of our tap anyways.
@missapis: oh! never say 100% LOL. Obviously don't drink it if it's contaminated and there's a warning out. Ok, so in seriousness, it should be safe unless there is some alert out about contamination.
@firsttimemom: My parents do too and it's NASTY. They finally got a fridge with a filter and it made SUCH a difference. They have to replace the filter a lot though.
At home, I have a Brita filter. At work, I drink it out the faucet. I never heard this either, but if I did, I would have ignored it. I also eat turkey sandwiches from Subway.
Firsttimemom- I grew up on well water and loved it!
Ok, maybe this is just an ignorant perspective since I'm not a mommy or a mommy to be, but I would totally drink the heck out of tap water before I would drink the bottled water that has plastic chemicals in it.
And the lunch meat thing... don't eat it if it's been sitting out for a while, but I would definately still eat lunch meat. My mom practically lived off the stuff and I was the picture of baby health (I was 2 weeks before due date, though). The nurse joked that my APGAR was an eleven.
If you are really worried maybe you can call your local water board and find out just how much chlorine content is in YOUR water? It's different in every municipality. That way you can take that to your doc (or research online) if it's below a safe limit?
We always drink filtered tap water anyway.
I think it's great that you're thinking about this! I come from the camp of better safe than sorry.
We have a Brita thing on our faucet for drinking water. I do use tap water to brush my teeth though. Not really worried about that little amount.
I have been trying to drink filtered water for the most part.
You have to pick and choose your battles, for me, drinking filtered water or bottled water over tap water is easy because I like the taste of it better anyways.
Indoor plumbing has existed for over 100 years now. It was probably MORE dangerous decades ago, before municipalities tested and treated water.
Who told you this? Where did they hear it? I doubt they can site a serious study that draws a correlation between tap water and miscarriages.
If you're concerned about your water, I'd highly recommend checking out the documentary called "Tapped". (If you have Netflix, it's on the "watch instantly" menu). It's mostly about the bottled water industry--but it talks a lot about municipal tap water as well. According to the documentary, tap water is highly regulated whereas bottled water, in many cases, is unregulated. It's kind of crazy. Also, municipal water sources have to report exactly what chemicals are in the water and you have acess to the reports.
I'm sure there are other places to access this info, but on the top right portion of this page at the Environmental Working Group you can enter your zip code and water company and a list of chemicals will come up.
From research I've done, I'd trust tap water over bottled water any day. That being said, I do have a Britta filter that I use regularly to get some of the extra "goodies" out of my water.
Good luck!
I would be more concerned about drinking bottled water, to be honest with you.
Most bottled water is just tap water anyway so I wouldn't worry about it. Tap water is also tested 100's of times per day, and bottled water is untested and unregulated. I'd take tap water over bottled any day (barring any known problems). Not to mention all the plastic chemicals, and waste factor. Less then 30% of all water bottles are recycled world wide.

I've heard that tap water can cause a miscarriage due to the chlorination, but do you think this is just another thing to worry about without a huge risk? Are you drinking regular tap water?
