They were recently recommended to me since any previous extensions i’ve used caused my hair to fall out. Apparently tape ins are much gentler on your already existing hair.

I have had a full head of extensions. They last a lot longer than a month, mine lasted for 6. If they’re done properly, they only need to be taken out and re-taped when they have grown out. I love them because they don’t cause as much damage, and although they’re more expensive initially, with proper care you can reuse the same extensions for about a year, sometimes more.

I had 2 sets, but I have really fine hair and was growing out a pixie cut so I needed a lot to create the illusion of lots of hair. It depends on how thick your hair is, I think. Two sets didn’t look like a lot in my hands, but attached to my scalp was a different story. i have some pics on the computer, I can post some when I jump on it next, if it might help?

@MsGinkgo:  I don’t remember how many sets, but I was quoted $800 at my high end King St West salon. I ended up not getting them because my hair is already very long and it looks voluminous when curled. I used to have extensions because my hair, when straight, is flat and lifeless. It takes me 10 mins to curl, so it didn’t make sense to spend a ton of money on extensions again.

I truly trust my stylist though, so I know that if they would damage my fragile hair/sensitive scalp, she would not have recommended them.

@letigre:  Did your hair grow back??  I use clip ins and I think my hair is thinner because of them, which ironically was the reason I started using them in the first place.

@MsGinkgo:  $200?! Holy crap, my quote was highway robbery in comparison!

I own a set of Luxy hair extensions. I got the cheapest set and I think they were less than $150 taxes/duties/shipping/USD–>CAD in. I’ve had them for 2 years and wear them about once a month (special occasions).

I have thick but flat hair, and the smallest set is enough for me. It blends right in. I don’t really know where I could fit more wefts in if I had upgraded.

@FutureMrsJohnston:  I think my hair has grown back, but all in all, my hair is much weaker now than it was before I started getting extensions. It may have to do with age, but I doubt my hair should change so much from 23 to 25.

@MsGinkgo:  I think you got a great price. If I remember correctly, my quote was for 22 inch wefts, also human hair.

@MsGinkgo:  Here you go! The first pic is of one packet, I had two of them. The pieces in that packet are cut in half and then taped, so it doubles. Then there’s a before pic, and two after pics. Mine cost $500 AU which is more than double the price of the wax bead ones I’ve seen, but the hair is top quality, and I still have all my extensions if I want to put them back in… they’re still in perfect condition.

You can see a colour difference in these pics because it was the night I had them put in. The extensions can’t get wet for the first 24 hours, but after that they are okay. At my next visit I had a full colour done to match the extensions to my own hair, and you couldn’t tell the difference.

I had the extensions taken out in January, mainly because it was summer here and I lose a lot of body heat through my scalp, and I was overheating badly. My hair is no different now than it was before, actually it’s probably in better shape because I’m still growing it out… right now it’s shoulder length and blonde.

@MsGinkgo:  I personally prefer clip in extensions. You can take them out every night and they look just as real as the others.
