Discuss. I'm in the market and both have good points, both have bad points. Convince me either way.
Best man and his wife swears by their Tassimo. No idea what the difference is but FI was giddy as heck to add it to our registry LOL
I have a Keurig and I LOVE IT! My FMIL got it for me for christmas when then first came out and I use this thing everyday! hot chocolate coffee tea all of it! and if you have special coffee that you love you can get a reuseabale cup that you can put your own coffee grounds in!
Tassimo seems to have Milka hot chocolate but maybe it's only Cadbury here?
Sorry, I have no experience with either but I would totally choose Tassimo just for the Cadbury hot chocolate or whatever it is.
I used to demo the Nespresso machines in university at Home Outfitters! I was strung out on coffee all day.
A Keurig has bad points? News to me. I love mine. There is absolutely nothing I don't like about it.
I've done some research on this. From what I can tell, Keurig will probably give you better plain old coffee, while Tassimo will give you better specialty coffee drinks like lattes.
I have a Tassimo and love it for espresso and lattes. Its coffee is frankly pretty undrinkable. To make good coffee, I warm up some milk in the microwave and add espresso to it. Yum!
I was given the Tassimo as a gift. I've considered getting a Keurig for just coffee, but the espresso in milk trick works well enough that I don't think I'm going to bother.
Have you heard of a Nespresso? We have one and it's amazing!
I haven't had any issues with our Keurig. It's great for what it's supposed to do. DH loves hot tea, it makes a great cup. I like coffee, it does a great job. My only wish is that it would make lattes, because although I now go to Starbucks less, I still go....
I'm not a big coffee drinker, but I do like a decaf cappuccino every now and then. I like fancy latte type drinks (chai lattes, macchiatos, but again, decaf where I can for the espresso based ones). Otherwise, hot chocolate and tea. It would also be nice to offer to guests as our current "real" cappuccino machine cacked out a while ago and to be honest, it was a bit of a pain in the butt to start with.
I've been doing research and here's what I've read that makes this a tough debate for me (correct me if any of it is wrong, and feel free to add to my list!):
I also tried the hot chocolate from the Nescafe Dolce Gusto machine which was really tasty, and had a sip of their cappuccino. I liked the milk froth, and the cappuccino was certainly strong. BUT their product line up is TINY and barely has anything decaffeinated.
@QBbride: The Nespresso looks nice (I saw one today in The Bay) but it's a lot more coffee focused it seems. Do they have non-coffee cartridges?
@bakerella: no I think it just has coffee pods. But we have the one you can froth real milk in, so sometimes we'll froth milk and add it to hot chocolate mix, chai etc. it works out to 63 cents/cup. We just bought one for my Mum for Christmas.
Anyone else? I got another plus for the Tassimo, a guy I went to high school with works for them and offered to send me a bunch of free coffee! LOL!
I really like the Keurig. The refillable filter k-cup saves us some money because we can buy large bags of Dunkins ground coffee from Costco and still use the machine. We have an older one which is loud but the new ones are MUCH quieter. This is definetly going on my registry lol.
I just got a Keurig a week ago after jokingly telling my dad that if he bought himself one it would be unfair if he didn't share the love and buy me one too. LOL! He never falls for that kind of stuff, but did this time!
Anyway, I love my Keurig. You just have to be sure to get distilled water because I've heard that they can be tempermental if you use tap in it even though it has a filter. I love the coffee, but the teas and hot chocolate are SO good too!
@BayStateBride: So I'm hearing varied reviews about the fancy drinks part which is what I'd really be buying it for. Good or lacking? I do like that there are SO many more flavours available for the Keurig and the new partnership with Starbucks.... I'm surprisingly leaning towards the Keurig where I thought my mind was pretty much made up on the Tassimo.
@bakerella: I'm big into the teas, cocoas, and flavored coffees. I buy them online (usually Amazon) and at BB&B. I have also bought them at Costco and even found them on sale at Sears last Christmas.
To be honest, I find it cheaper to buy a big box of Red Rose tea bags and just use those for my standard everyday tea, but I do buy flavored tea k-cups and can say they are good. The flavored drinks & coffees are what get me though. I bought the Green Mountain pumpkin coffee during the fall and that was super yummy. I'm a bit biased however because I'm a Green Mountain fan; I think they make great coffee. I really like the cider k-cups too. Seriously delicious. I'm a variety girl so having a varied selection of drinks is great for me. Although that doesn't help you decide because either way (Keurig or Tassimo) you get variety.
FI and my brother buy the Revv k-cups. Apparently there's a crazy amount of caffeine in each cup. I get jolted from a small cup of coffee so I've never tried those, but they seem to enjoy them.
me & my cowrker just went in on a keurig together... so far we love it!
@bakerella: The starbucks K cups are out now! They are just for most of their core coffees (Sumatra, House, Pike- at least that's just what I saw) and I've only seen them in JCPenney. I'm not too sure when they will be available in the actual starbucks stores, heck they might even be there now. I worked for sbux up until a few weeks ago (had to leave due to a family issue) and we were told that the retail stores would get them either before or after the big grocery stores got them. The boxes all have new designs too :)
I have this keurig by Cuisinart that FI and I both love. It has a big water reservoir so you don't have to constantly refill, it has a rinse option (which is great because you probably don't want your tea tasking like chocolate or your hot chocolate tasking like coffee, etc.), it has an iced setting for tea and coffee, and it's really quick.
But it doesn't do cappuccino or lattes. I mostly buy flavored coffees and FI drinks a lot of tea and hot chocolate. I do love steamed milk, but I'm ok with regular coffee and real (non-shelf stable) milk.
I really want a Kuerig this christmas! I asked my FMIL for one..
The reason I went for the kuerig instead of the tassimo, the kuerig brews just regular, flavored coffee and teas, hot coco..ect.. where Tassimo brews more of the fancy coffee's like espresso. I found even the regular brewed coffee in the tassimo tasted to bitter for me.
so it depends on your coffee taste....
The Kuerig is also more versitale and you can use a reusable basket for what ever loose coffee you like.
Do you like lattes/cappucino? Then Tassimo, because Keurig can't do these. If you're ONLY a fan of brewed coffee (of different flavors), the Keurig is the king.
I have a tassimo and love it, but I don't use it to brew regular coffee. My inlaws do though, and I've never tasted a difference. It's just cheaper to buy regular grinds. I essentially only use the tassimo for fancy pants lattes and the like.
I love my Keurig, I feel like it's more versatile. From what I understand through my (very limited) research, it seems like the tassimo is for more fancy coffee drinks. DH bought mine for me two years ago and although he doesn't drink coffee he gets use out of it as well with the cider, tea, and hot chocolate (the K cup dark hot chocolate and bailey's is excellent btw).
I'm Keurig all the way, I love it. I have the single cup one and the bigger one is on our registry. We use it for everything, coffee, tea, decaf, and it even comes with an attachment where you can put your own coffee in it as well. We are Tim Horton's coffee drinkers in the house so it's nice to just do one cup of coffee when we want instead of a whole pot.
Damnit I need both!!!! I love the product line up of the Keurig, but I want the cappuccino/latte functions of the Tassimo!!!! Ugh no wonder this is so hard. Why can't one machine do both?!
I have a tassimo and have always loved it, but recently my parents just bought a keurig and when I was home I fell in love with it.
The tassimo is great because they have lattes (Carmel latte is amazing) & cappuccinos but I feel like the keurig has more delicious coffee options (love donut shop and Caribou morning blend)
With that, I am hoping my tassimo stops working soon so I can justify buying a keurig (terrible I know!)
DH is getting a Keurig from me for Christmas (bought it from Costco back in September - seems to be the best deal).
I decided on the Keurig due to a few factors: (1) My in-laws have a Keurig and every time I go over there I (a non-coffee drinker) ask for a cup of coffee because the coffee is so delicious; (2) We have a Tassimo in my office and while it's cool that it makes the fancier drinks like lattes, I find the overall quality of the coffee isn't nearly as good; (3) My mum retired recently (this means she has a lot of free time on her hands!) and made a multi-day study of the Keurig vs. Tassimo vs. Dolce Gusto (I don't think she really explored the Nespresso...we had one in our hotel room in Lisbon last year and it was awesome!) and she ultimately decided on the Keurig after all her research and she absolutely loves hers.
Having said all that, I don't think there's necessarily a bad decision - all lead to yummy warm beverages!
Oh, and if you end up getting a Keurig, I would recommend doing some K-cup shopping in the States where there's a much better selection. For regular coffee K-cup purchases though, Costco has a pretty good selection and, according to my mother, the best price.
I have a Tassimo too - we got it for our wedding. We picked it because it does the latte/cappucino thing and Keurig does not. I do love it for those drinks. However, I really do not like the regular brewed coffee in my Tassimo and I have a hard time finding the Tdiscs for it. My grocery stores do not carry them - only Target, so I end up ordering a bunch online every few months.
I was also on a 'high' about buying one or the other. But then I realized.....
Umm... I am just not getting this hype. You can make coffee in a typical 'one-cup' coffee maker too which has a resusable filter. Just make 1 cup or 2. The time to brew is the same anyway. And use whatever type of coffee you want. The choice is MUCH MORE VAST because you are not limited to 'K cups'. Not only that, the teas can be made the EXACT same way in those 1-cup (or heck, even 12 cup) coffee makers that have reuseable filters!
The only thing that sets coffee makers apart in this case was those high-end ones that come with a proper steamer already attached yet still use the basic principle of resusable filter. And they also do not require any water filter change because they are self-cleaning with permanent filters. (which both the Keurig and Tassimo do.)
Edited to say: Keuring and Tassimo would work REALLY well in an Office environment though where people can buy their own K cups of flavours they like.
@hergreenapples: Apparently there's a K-cup outlet in Bowmanville that's really good :) I do go over to Buffalo a lot though, so I could definitely do a lot of shopping down there.
I also have a milk frother thing (from Epicure, I love it), so it would be easy enough to make my own lattes etc.
That's it. I'm going to invent a machine that does both and be wildly rich! I don't understand why Keurig can't do lattes and cappuccinos! Blargh!!!!
@bakerella: When you end up inventing that please let me know. I'll be first in line buying one.
I have the Tassimo and I EFFING LOVE IT. Sure, there might not be as many choices as there are for Keurig, but I drink so much Gevalia coffee that it doesn't matter. There's zero programming since it reads the barcode on each disc so it automatically knows exactly what to do with it. Really magical.
I do have the latte and the chai tea latte options but I don't care for them as much as the regular straight up coffee options. Currently drinking Gevalia French Roast and it just makes me so happy.
Also: Tassimo is WAY cheaper than Keurig. Still not inexpensive, but both the machine and the discs can be found for less than Keurig products.
I honestly LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE our Keurig. My fiance's roommate had a tassimo which was nice, but I feel like there are way more choices for k-cups out there as far as coffees, brands, ciders, teas, cappucinnos. I find the quality of the machine is a little bit better than the tassimo and I like that there is an adapter you can purchase to use normal ground coffee instead of the k-cups, which is a nice feature. I'm not sure if the Tassimo has that feature as well. But I love my keurig!
DH and I just bought my mom a Tassimo last night. It was on sale at Superstore for $78 and the 18 packs of cappucinos were on sale for $5!!! Other than that, I have no advice :P
My parents recently bought a Keurig from Costco, and I loooove it. It makes the drink insanely fast, and that's probably my favorite part about it. From what I heard, its substantially quicker than the tassimo, but I've never tried one so I can't say for sure.
While fancy lattes and cappuccinos are nice on occasion, I'm a hardcore tea drinker so I'd go with the Keurig; it just seems more practical IMHO.
Tassimo brews my cups in about 90 seconds. Not long at all. :)
@bakerella: A K-cup outlet in Bowmanville? For serious?! We'll definitely have to check that out after Christmas (I so wish I could just give it to DH now...for my own benefit!).
Everyone has made me very excited to try out the Keurig my Mom bought me for Xmas!
My Keurig takes maybe 20 sec to brew? Speed is important when making a cup for more than one person.
We have a Keurig and I love it, it brews in about 15-20 seconds.. if that.. It recently broke ( my son threw it off the counter). I called the company to see if there was anything they could do, and they sent me a brand new coffee maker! (and we didnt buy any warrenty) .. I am pretty happy with the company, and I love the coffee maker!
