I've been planning my tattoo for quite some time now. I originally planned on getting it on the inside of my wrist, where I could easily see it but it could be covered with a bracelet or watch.
The issue with this is that I am very small-boned, and my wrist is maybe an inch across. The tattoo design I have would fit, but would probably trail around to the top and may look weird from the top, or else I'd have to make it small enough that I'm afraid it would lose some of the detail.
The other option I am considering is my inner forearm. Pros of this: the design could be seen better in all its gorgeous detail, and long sleeves could cover it. I wouldn't get it huge, but probably the size of the version shown below. The cons: it's much bigger, and could appear very flashy... it's intimidating and more of a risk. If I got a job where I needed to cover up tattoos, it would greatly limit my wardrobe options. I'm in Psychology, so depending on the actual job I get, this could be an issue or a non-issue.
Here is the design, drawn by the fabulous Cynthia Warren:

I voted for wrist. I'm not a fan of forearm tattoos on women and I think the design is too delicate to work well on such a large space.
I say the inner forearm. I would want to be able to see the details of the tattoo and risk the ink kind of running together to get it that small. I would have said wrist if it was maybe one word but I like the idea of the inner forearm and in the warmer months you can always try to find a makeup that will cover it for work if you need to. I have writing in script on my hip and I love it there next to my lily if you're open to other ideas.
i voted wrist! but i also think it could be very cute across the top of one shoulder... still vivible but only when u want it to be, ya know?
I do like the top of the shoulder idea too. I was going to say back of the neck but I think that'd be hard to cover up for work if you wore your hair up.
Hmm, I don't like forearm tattoos when they are words because there's always an issue with it being upside down for someone. I know that's silly, but it bugs me! I like wrist for you but you'd likely need to make this much smaller. Is there anywhere else it could go? I could see it as a cool chest tattoo...
Inner wrist, for sure. Forearm tattoos don't look as delicate, which I assume is the look you are going for.
I'd be open to other places, but I want to be able to see it without looking in the mirror, which is why I feel like chest/shoulders are out. Definitely open to suggestions!
ETA:
this is a bigger version of the place I planned on my forearm. I wouldn't get it that big, but thought it might help visually.

Like I said, I love mine on my hip. Have you thought about seeing how it would look positioning it diagonally across the foot or something like that? (I'm not sure how it would look with words but you could see how it looks).
@mandb122: where on your hip is it? Do you have a picture you feel comfortable sharing? I feel like it would have the upside down issue that someone else mentioned since it is script.
@lilyfaith: Aw, you almost changed my stance with that one. Very pretty.
Hip tattoos are nice, too (I have a pair of bass clefs on mine) since they're easily concealed and there's plenty of room. I have one on my shoulder blade as well but they kind of suck to hide.
Another vote for the top of your foot. I have one of mine there and I love it :)
I just went and looked at your engagement pictures cause like to get a visual of the person (ugh I sound so creepy haha) but you are so cute you could TOTALLY pull off the forearm tattoo I think! :) Even still I think the top of your foot would be super cute and you wouldn't have to worry about covering it up!
This is the very best picture I could take from my awkward angle and with our bad lighting (does that even look like a hip? it'd be easier if my fiance was here to take the picture
). My pants usually hit right on the script or right below it depending on the fit of the pants (they're just pulled down a little more to see it better).
@missfireslayer: thanks, you're so sweet! the only thing that worries me about the top of my foot is that I wear heels and other open shoes straight through spring, summer, and part of fall. And my feet are SUPER ticklish, so I don't think I'd be able to hold still to be tattooed! I can't even get a pedicure. I may have almost kicked the poor woman last time I tried. :/
@mandb122: that's a really cute tattoo, I love it! I really like the placement. I'll have to consider that as well. (Can you tell I'm not decisive at all with this? It's such a huge decision!)
I vote inner forearm.. I got "Breathe" tattooed here a while ago and I love the placement, and it is easy enough to hide with long sleeves should I need or want to.
It is a huge decision. I have four and I want more. I know what I want but I have no idea where I want it. I'm thinking other hip or possibly upper back/side area. Another option would be up your side? Sometimes those look really cute I think.
@junebug12: I like that!
I'm putting in a vote for your foot! I LOVE tattoos on feet (if I ever were to get one, that is where I'd get it). But between your original options, I'd vote wrist. I'm personally just not a fan of forearm tattoos.
I don't think you'd have to worry about the tattoo on the foot tickling, I'm extremely ticklish and it wasn't a problem at all. I can't get pedicures either, I can't hold my feet still and I'm always afraid to kick someone! When I got my foot done it tickled for about 30 seconds until the tattoo artist actually started inking me... nothing about a tattoo tickles! Haha. :)
@MissBoPeep: the thing is, it's mostly conditioned now. I jerk my foot instinctively before something even tickles. It can hurt and I still do it. It's a state of mind, but I just don't think I can fight it or would want to with something as permanent as a tattoo.
I'm going to agree with MissBoPeep. It shouldn't tickle and if it does, it'll be brief.
@lilyfaith: Understandable, I would've hated myself for squirming and messing up my tattoo :) I think I would go for the forearm instead then, or talk to a tattoo artist to see what they think about fitting it on your wrist. To me it seems like it would be to small of a space, and you'd risk the letters running together.
I voted for inner forearm. I think scripted tattoos on the inner forearm look really nice on ladies. Here are my two inner forearm tattoos. Just 2 of the many that will be shown on my wedding day.
I say on your forearm. If you get it too close to the wrist, then you run into the problem with cracking because you constantly bend your hand to do anything. Look at your hand and notice all the lines on your wrist. I know so many people with black work on their wrists and it's cracked in the middle of the design. So if you want something close to your wrist, do it just below the "bend line" ^_^
Here is my forearm design. I got it to celebrate 4 years of being clean. The big star represents my daughter. When I found out I was pregnant, I changed my life. She saved my life. Next year I will add a fifth star. ^_^
@Miss Tattoo: I love your concept and your tattoo! It looks great on your forearm.
I'd go for the wrist, but like you I'd be concerned that the design wouldn't look as good. I ended up putting mine on my left ribcage.
I voted wrist, personal preference.
A suggestion if you're worried about it "looking weird" from the top with the two ends kind of just sitting there alone, you could get the ends attached with some type of swirly design or heart or something around the top so that the tattoo goes around your entire wrist like a tattoo bracelet?
@lilyfaith: Thank you! I was thinking of having it closer to my wrist, but my artist told me about the bend problem and tattoos never heal properly if right at the bend points. I think your design will look good on your inner forearm or even across your back.
I vote forearm. The writing will just look beautiful there.
I have a tramp stamp (It's the only place on my body my tattoo design would fit...It's three elephants holding each other's tails...one for each of my sisters) and one on my ribcage (a gecko. My other two sisters have an identical one. It's for our baby sister that passed away who's name was Elizabeth. We called her Lizardbreath.)
I'd love to have one down my forearm, but I'm going to be a lawyer. I will be getting another one next year when I pass the bar. Either justice scales or "And Justice For All" down my spine.
I have a wrist tattoo in my grandmother's handwriting, let me take a photo to show placement.. sounds like a possible combination of both placements you mention. I love it!

I vote forearm. The design is so elegant and flowy, it would be a shame to chop it down and lose those long trailing lines.
If you do go with the hip, be aware that placement in that part of the body can be tricky. Try to keep as much of the design as possible on the skin directly over your hip bone to avoid distortion as you age (and inevitably gain at least a little weight).
Okay, i am late to the party (as per usual) but here is what I know (a good good friend of mine is a tat artist and this is verbatim what she tells everyone when they are talking tats with her)
-wrists, feet, ankles all hurt like a be-otch 1)because of the bones & 2)because the skin is thinner in those areas. Because the skin is thinner, the ink does not 'adhere' as well, or last as long. If you get a tattoo in one of these areas expect many touch ups over the years.
-hips, stomach, thighs, breasts (or slightly above) and 'love handles' are never a good place for a woman to get tattoos simply because of the child bearing factor. If you're done having kids, can't have them or will not, ever in a million years even think about it, then go for it. However, it pays to think about stretch marks in those areas if you already have had them/are done with kids because stretch marks don't take ink as well either, sometimes not at all.
That being said, I would probably say your forearm is the best place to get it for it looking good, lasting, and not being unrecognizably altered by age/kids.
I'm not a huge fan of text tats, but if that's your thing then you're going to want it done somewhere the ink won't bleed or fade so that it's still legible down the line.
HTH.
I voted wrist. I have both of my inner wrists tattooed!! They havent "cracked" and they are very detailed tattoos and both look great!! I hide them with long sleeves/watch/bracelets easily. One is over 5 years old, the other is about 4 years old. (I also have tats on my inner ankle and "back to butt" area on the side =)
I have tiny wrists as well... (Im 5'1" about 100 lbs with skinny joints)
Not gonna lie.... inside the wrist does hurt! Def the most painful out of all my tattoos...
