Just curious, what type of work do you do that allows you to have visible tattoos?
@MrsSl82be: My workplace right now at a group home doesn't care. But when I worked at an office the only tattoo I have that was really visible was my ankle tattoo. They actually had me put a bandaid on it if I was wearing a skirt.
i worked for an insurance company, in a call center, and visible tattoos were okay, but facial piercings were not (because they were too distracting - go figure)
I'm an office assistant and I don't have to cover up my visible ones. I have one on my wrist, one on my forearm, and one on my foot..
I do accounting/I'm the office manager and I don't have to cover any of my tattoos!
I have one small black tattoo on the underside of my forearm (the only visible one) and I work in Human Rights/ International Law and it's never been an issue yet. I also generally wear long sleaves to work, depending on the culture I'm in.
i work in a university hospital research lab and never have had to cover up my wrist or chest tats.
I have tattoos on both ankles and hip. Obviously the hip is always covered but I wear slacks to work everyday because of the ankle tats. Visible tattoos are not acceptable in the legal industry. I've worked at other non-legal companies where they were accepted, especially on the IT staff (we're expected to be a bit different).
I'm a teacher. Have never gotten any complaints, even when I taught in Korea where tattoos are still associated with gangs. Oddly enough, the one place I've had to hide my tattoos was working at Seattle's Best (they made me take out my nose ring, too).
I'm currently going back to school to get a degree in Culinary Arts and I haven't met anyone yet who minds a chef with tattoos! But even though the one I have is rather large (goes from my shoulder down to my hip) unless I wear a tank top it's covered all the time anyway.
I don't have any tattoos but I do have my nose pierced and I'm an attorney. I work in civil law-- mostly small to medium sized business stuff. I do take it out when I appear in court (not because it has ever been suggested I should-- but I just don't want any judgments to be made about me and affect my representation of my clients). Other than that I leave it in and no one (boss, clients, whoever) has ever said anything about it.
I get the impression the same would be true of tattoos, within reason. If I had them on my arms or legs I'd probably not cover them for meetings with clients or other attorneys, but cover them in court.
I'm a Paralegal, and I have to cover my tattoos. I do have several on my forearms and those tattoos hardly ever get covered and the attorneys I work with never say anything.
I do have a half sleeve and chest tattoos and sometimes the chest tattoos show a bit if I wear certain shirts, and my half sleeve could peer out a bit if the 1/4 sleeves ride up a bit, but again, no one has ever said anything to me.
If I'm meeting with a client I do my best to cover up as much as possible out of respect for my firm.
I'm a nanny and I never have to cover up my tattoo on my lower back. But some times my ward will see it and say, "mom told me not to draw on myself. Why did you draw on yourself, Gigi?" HAHAH!!!
Im a commercial property manager, and I do not have to cover any of my tattoos. My visible ones are on left upper arm/shoulder, my right inside wrist and left outside calf. Years ago I did accounting for a law firm, and A LOT of the gals there had tattoos also and no one had to cover theirs. Most places seem to be really cool about it.
I'm generally in administrative work (secretary, etc....) its weird, some people care, some dont...
I work in specialty practice with an attached surgery center and we have no rules on exposed tattoos. We have a nurse with a ton of exposed tattoos and it is a non issue. I previously worked for a Pediatricians office, and there could be NO exposed tattoos- they had to be covered with a band-aid.
Its nice to see its more acceptable in the work place!
I work as an Aflac rep, and tattoos should be covered. I am also a life insurance broker, and they don't have a tattoo policy
I work right now as a Nanny...my boss has no problem with it. I'm switching to a Youth Counselor job in August, and they luckily have no problem with it as well. I like that it's more acceptable to have them now.
I'm a journalist in a small town with chest and wrist tattoos that I've had for so long I've forgotten to cover them. I've never ever had an issue and in fact people usually complement me.
My boss and I had a funny conversation last week comparing tattoos, as his are way older than mine!
I work in a gym daycare. Tonight was actually my first night! I have a medium sized, colorful tattoo on the inside of my upper arm. No one said anything and I was wearing a short sleeved shirt. I am allowed to wear whatever I want so I doubt it will ever be an issue.
I'm in administration, and no one comments negatively on mine. If they show a little through my clothes, it's no big deal. I don't interact with the public much anyway.
Gwen
I've worked as a secretary, a journalist and now I work at a marketing company and no one has ever had a problem with mine. I think the trend now is to not care as much as long as they aren't horribly offensive.
i have a half sleeve, some up on my clavicles, and a back piece that extends from my neck aaaallll the way down and around each of my sides, but i'm a software engineer in san francisco so no one cares at all. anytime anyone comments is to ask me where i got them done & if they can get the number
I'm a nurse, but mine aren't visible unless I'm wearing something that shows my back, which scrubs do not, so I'm fine there. I have some other coworkers who have visible tattoo's though and they don't have to cover them up or anything.
I have tattoos everywhere! My neck, back, arms, stomach and even wrist. Did i mention my neck!
I'm a community developer and it generally feels pretty comfortable to have visible tattoos but honestly, i have had many moments where i have dropped by a cheap clothing shop to pick up a cardigan on my way to a meeting.
My tattoo isn't visible, but my coworkers have visible tattoos. We are middle school teachers.
I work for now as a bartender, have worked in national conservative politics, personal assistant, insurance firm, and commercial property. The only time someone has had issues with my tatoos was when I worked for one of Ted Turners companies.
I have 8 tattoos but only my anklet can be seen and no one has said anything in the nine years I've worked at my office. (I do graphic design/marketing for an a/e company) People are have been really shocked when I say I have 8. I'm not sure what that means, haha
I work on a tading desk and i dont have to cover mine up, its never been an issue. I have a wrist tat.
I have a tattoo, just not usually visible (on my shoulder blade).
I work in a children's hospital. Visible tattoos are allowed as long as they aren't sexual or scary.
I have a lower back tat and work at a financial firm so it's covered most of the time except if I bend over, but my co-workers have never mentioned anything. I would never get one anywhere else just because I don't want the hassle of trying to cover it up every day.
I know hospital policys aren't all the same but as a nursing student we are allowed to have one earing, in each ear, and no visible tattoos. One girl wears a bigger watch band to cover her wrist tattoo but a couple of people have to wear band-aids.
I worked in food service before my current job and they made me cover up my tattoos. They said that they didn't believe I looked conservative enough. However in my new job as an office manager for my family's business they don't seem to mind. I have 3 tattoos, although only one is visble behind my ear.
I work for an insurance company working from home so definately do not need to cover my tats up. When have to go in the office they don't get covered up then either.
I work at a bank.. I have one on my foot you can see if my pants go up when I cross my leg or something.. one on my wrist that I could cover with sleeves but rarely do (unless its cold) and one behind my ear... It doesnt show if my hair is down but does if its up.. I dont try to cover them the ones that are visable are small ish and not offensive.. So no need to cover mine. I also have one on my right shoulder blade but that is never visable with the clothes that I wear at work.
mine is hidden (lower inner thigh area). If my coworkers can see it, I got a problem.
I would love to get more. I am itchin for a new tat.
I am a Mary Kay consultant- as long as I am dressed professional there's no rules against having tattoos. I usually try to cover most of them up, but my arms/chest almost always peek out. People always think it's funny but I have a trained auto response to questions about them 'I'm not your grandmother's Mary Kay consultant!' which always gets a laugh out of people! Frankly I think the tattoos help me with the younger crowd because Mary Kay has such an old lady connotation- a young girl covered in tattoos helps other young girls feel less fuddy duddy about wanting Mary Kay!
I work at a university and the only tatoos that are visable are the 3 on my feet/ankle and i've never been asked to cover them up.
I have two tattoos: one on my wrist, and the other on the top of my foot. The one on my foot is only 2-months old, but I have had the one on my wrist for 6 years. I have worked in California, Boston, and Colorado for a total of 4 companies and have never had a problem. I work in commercial construction project management, so while I sometimes go to job sites (used to all the time, not at this current job), I'm office/management. I've never been asked to cover my wrist tattoo up - though, I kept it covered with long sleeves for awhile when first starting a job. My one job in Boston was very visible - meeting with doctors/heads of hospitals, mayors, black tie events, etc. and I never really worried about it (it's not really visible most of the time anyway).
I work at a retirement home, I used to serve and now I do housekeeping, and we have to cover our tattoos if our uniform doesn't. I have to put band aids on mine. I wish we didn't have to because I would love to show off my tats
