Sorry you are frustrated. I have seen a few that have backs, but the back is usually sheer/lace and you can see all of the skin anyway.
Have you considered wearing a bolero? I also saw an episode of My Fair Wedding where they airbrushed the bride's tattoos... I have no idea how much that costs though...
do you need a solid back, or would something like an illusion back work? that's what my dress has. It's Mon Cheri Amelia.
Check out jcrew.com. They have a couple of wedding dresses that have full-back coverage, such as the cecelia, cotton cady, and the silk gala (with the black sash). I think you can find a dress like you described, your just going to have to search a little harder. Good Luck!
Thanks for the help! I'd rather get a dress that works than do airbrushing or any kind of makeup to cover it up. I understand it'll take some more searching. I really was thinking of getting a dress made, but not knowing much about picking out a seamstress, I think it would be safer to work with an established bridal salon. I may try calling around and seeing if any of them can help me.
By the way, here's an option I'm seriously considering, the Maggie Sottero Dakota dress with bolero:

hotchildinthecity, do you have a link or a pic to your dress? I'd love love to see it!
At some point, I think Mrs. Avocado posted a link to a shop selling wedding dresses that meet her modesty standards which included covered shoulders. MAybe try searching LDS compliant dressed? you could also ask a bridal shop about adding a back panel to a dress you like or attaching a bolero so it becomes part of the dress.
Here's a dress with a covered back that I found. I don't know what you're picturing as the rest of the look of your gown but just wanted to throw out the option!

David's Bridal also has two dresses right now with covered backs. One has lace (with satin) and the other is a very simple satin A-line. Both are inexpensive enough you could do some tailoring to make them a bit more your style if they're too conservative/modest as is.

I was having this issue as well when I was trying to find a dress that didnt leave my tattooed back exposed. I suggest finding a dress that may be of benefit to you, or meet with a desgined or seamstress. Here's a dress I was leaning toward having made.
I also have back tattoos and I was told not to worry about it when choosing dresses because the bridal salon seamstress would be able to add fabric or lace to most dresses. I ended up picking a Justin Alexander dress with an open back (I think it is called keyhole back) and the "keyhole" will be filled in with lace. My tattoos will still be visible through lace but not as prominent.
So maybe try additional bridal shops to see if their seamstress can work with you?
Thanks for the pics and advice, DollyLava, that is good to hear :-) Yay for solutions for tattooed women!!
I'm guessing you are going to have to have sleeves. I really don't know if they make sleeveless dresses with full backs?
@Rosie Girl - I would guess that a tailor could probably remove the sleeves if the OP didn't want them. (although I don't know a lot about tailoring so I may be wrong!)
I have this issue but not quite! I want to show my tattoos, but added layers to my veil for the ceremony so that they are very softened. Then at the reception I can show them off :) I have a half back piece and both of my shoulders/upper arms tattooed.
When I was looking at dresses, there were styles pronovias/manuel mota that have sleeves and a full back. You can see all the styles on their website-- you might have to hunt around a bit but they are there.
I love this dress by Allure its is out of my price range $1500 but its sexy and has some beading. Its pretty sweet.
I would consider a bolero for the ceremony, then taking it off to show off the tattoos during the reception.
I looked at Maggie Sottero's dresses, and this is the only one I found that covers most of the back :(
There's a dress I'm sure the hive can help with, but I can't find... it's almost like a shirt wrap dress.... I thought it might have been amsale but I can't find it! I know a few here have it, and it's gorgeous!
These are all pronovias designers (there's a few levels in his "house")

There's a ton more in the 2010 pronovias catalog as well. I hope someone also helps with the other dress I mentioned above....
Otherwise, I say embrace your tattoos! They can make for some awesome images!
What do you lovely ladies think of this one as an option with the bolero. Then I can take it off later if I want to. Maggie Sotterro Dakota:

Hmmm, after this conversation I'm beginning to accept the idea of a bolero, and honestly, I wear a lot of wraps and shrugs in my everyday life, so it would be "me."
I didn't read the comments so I'm sure this was mentioned but I'll offer it anyway. Most strapless gowns can be ordered with a bolero that goes with that particular dress. So I would go that route if I were you, that way you keep your dress options open! Good luck!
If you find a strapless dress you love, ask the salon to make you a custom shrug or bolero for your dress. They should have extra fabric when they make your dress. I LOVE the wraps that come around the back like a portrait collar; so femine and sophisticated. And an added plus - if you choose to have pics with your tattoos, you can detach it! I love options. Good luck!
that dakota dress is cute, and i love love love the second dress that KLP2010 posted.
i thought of something while looking through the suggestions-if you find a dress with a lacy back just have a seamstress sew in a nude colored fabric under the lace. that way you can have your lace, and not see your tattoos. if it has a key-hole or open back same solution-sew in a nude backed panel of lace. less fuss than trying to cover them with makeup! good luck to you!
I like the Maggie Dakota with the bolero. It seems liek you keep going back to that dress, its beautiful and you should definitely give it a whirl! Post pics after you try all your options!
And lastly, good luck in your search for the perfect dress! It took me 8 months to finally find mine!
Hi All,
I have a tattoo behind my right shoulder blade, it's not huge, but it's pretty much a little smaller than the size of my fist clutched together (of a rose with my name underneath - which is something I got down when I was 17!!), it will be visable in my wedding dress. I am thinking of maybe covering it up with make up, and apparently there is a make up that does that , but the only problem is that it can smudge off. So I finally had an idea, I mean everyone knows I have a tattoo! so oh well! I've asked my photographer if he can photoshop my tattoo out on the photos that are going in my wedding album and the ones enlarged, and he can! =) which I am pleased about, if I don't decide to cover it up! I don't want to stress about it smudging off etc.
My dress strapless!
There are a few out there, and they are absolutely gorgeous.
I saw this one:

I'm glad to hear that YOU are the one who wants to cover your ink, and that you're not caving in to your Mother's wishes! We've had several Clients start off Designing the dress their Mom wanted in order to disguise tattoos (and scarification) but we always end up showing it off instead. Remember that it's a part of you and it's YOUR Wedding no matter what!
I have had the same thing on my mind lately. I purchased a strapless gown and have a pretty large back piece that I don't want to show... I decided to wear my hair down and cover it with makeup.
The bolero on the maggie is gorgeous! I'm also wearing a maggie I might do the same now that I have seen it.
Thanks again for all your responses and help with my dress search. I'm still confused about what direction I want to go in, and am feeling horribly indecisive, but I've got a better sense of what my options are. I so, so, so appreciate all your help.
Here's a couple:
Elie Saab Aida:

Justin Alexander 9552

I would try Pronovias, La Sposa, etc. The more European designers seem to have more dresses with backs.
If you're going with a bolero, then the sky is the limit! You can get any dress you want and then get a bolero. You dont have to stick to one that has a matching one from the designer like that Maggie.
Some more:
Pronovias Fada

Pronovias Fayette

Pronovias Festin

Pronovias Iman

Iknow allure has a "modest" wedding dress selction, and venus has a "temple bridal" section for a more modest dress.
I know I want to cover my chest tattoo, but not too concerned about the ones on my back or my arms to show, but i also don't want the ones on my legs to show so that is easy, I'm getting a long dress.
But I do agree, when i was first looking at dresses i thought it would be hopless to cover up my tattoos, but with a little more searching, it wont be too hard. Keep looking and don't settle, and good luck!
let us know what you decide and we would love to see pictures:) boleros are a great way to go:)

I have tattoos, it's true. I love them. They're on my upper back, and in fact, most of my upper back is covered with colorful tattoos. I wouldn't take them away if you paid me. However, that doesn't mean I want them to be on prominent display on my wedding day.
So, here is the dilemma: Ideally, I'd like to cover up my tattoos completely by my dress. So, I'd like a short-sleeved or sleevess dress with (gasp) not just straps but an actual back. How is it that it feels like well over 90% of the dresses I see when I'm browsing on the internet are completely strapless and backless? I'm actually thinking of getting a dress made for me by a seamstress because I can't find what I'm looking for. I've had one appointment at a bridal salon and they literally had no dresses that covered the upper back. Of course, you can make a bolero to cover the upperback, but I'd really rather just have a dress that suits my needs.
Is anyone else out there having similar problems? Is anyone else out there frustrated with the limited dress selection? Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm open to looking at literally any dress that covers the upperback.
