This may be a dumb question.... but is there tax on bridal gowns in Mass?  I friend told me she was charged tax and I assumed since Mass doesn't tax clothing, bridal gowns would be included in that?  Am I wrong?  If so, it might be worth the 40 minute drive to N.H. to save a few hundred!

I don't know about Mass but I got mine in Delaware where there was no tax.

Any money I saved in taxes, I quickly spent in gas driving there several times, not to mention the speeding ticket I got the day I ordered the gown :(

My goal wasn't to avoid the sales tax, my parents live near the MD/DE border so that store was convenient for them.

There is tax on clothing over $175 and you are taxed only on the amount over $175.  So if you bought a $1,000 dress you would be taxed on $825.

@KBowen, I am from MA too and chose the NH route. I'm gettign my dress at Medline's Daughter in NH. They have a huge selection and it helps that there is no sales tax. We tend to visit alot anyways though, so the amount of gas spent isn't an issue, but I'd factor that in before making the decision. If you have to go up to NH multiple times for the dress, the gas you spend may end up more than sales tax.

Yes, there is tax on clothes that cost over a certain amount. It is a tax on "luxury" clothes.

For this reason, I got my gown in NH (also at Madeleine's Daughter).  Tax free and I highly recommend the boutique!  Huge selection of gowns ranging in prices and styles.

Honestly the 6.25% MA Sales Tax on your dress is far less than what your Catering Bill and your Liquor Bill are going to be!  Figure in the gas for repeat trips to a NH salon for Tryons, Fittings, Pickup, etc and it's still less than buying it here.

At my shop the tax is rarely over $100., your Food Liquor Tax can be almost $1000.  Get ready!
