I visited quite a few places in the Chicagoland area and these service charges and taxes on top of what the pricing is seem to be all around the same everywhere...which can really add up quick! I actually ended up going a little beyond the Chicagoland area for our reception venue and was able to find something better suited for us.
our venue (waterfront/downtown seattle) has a 21% service charge and the sales tax rate is 10%. ouch. i feel your pain.
Our venue is 22% service charge and tax is 10.25% for downtown Chicago. Seems pretty standard at all the other venues we considered as well.
I've calmed down since the initial sticker shock! It is an ugly price but we do want the downtown wedding. Looking outside the Chicago has not been much different since all the suburbs are considered the Chicago Metro Area i.e. high taxes everywhere. Thanks all!

Just wondering what everyone is seeing as far as taxes and service charges in Chicago. We just received our contract from the venue with a double doozy 22% in service charges and another 11% in taxes. Is this what everyone else has found? What is the breakdown of these charges?
