I know there have been a few tea length bees out there.  Does anyone know of good places to try on tea length gowns before committing to one?

I'm really interested as I am very retro inspired.  I'm worried that my 6'0ft tall frame would look silly in a tea length and want to try a few on before I take the plunge.

My budget is small, so I may be exploring having someone make my dress.  My only fear with that is that I don't want it to look homemade.

I live in the DC area, though am having the wedding in Chicago, so either are good places to look.

I wore a tea length Mori Lee (dress 6172) that I purchased from my local bridal shop. It was about $429 before alterations. Here's the link to some pics: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/finally-a-non-pro-wedding-picture

Hi there :) Try going to Priscilla of Boston (there's one in Tysons Corner, but there may also be one closer to you) because they have a few cute tea length numbers. They aren't cheap, but it will give you an idea of how it looks on you. Definitely check out www.dollycouture.com. You can't try them on, but they are so cute and really reasonably priced.

I believe David's Bridal has some tea length dresses (both bridal and bridesmaid) so that you could at least see the length.

Try Macy's, JC Crew, and Nordstroms.  They sell lovely white dresses that aren't gowns but could be!  Happy shopping.  Show us your choice, please!!!

I was going to say Dolly Couture also...you can only order them online. She has tons of photos of "real brides" wearing her dresses on her Face Book page.

I am wearing a tea length dress, it is a Justin Alexander. I have posted it a million times, but here it is again. =)

Tonya:  This dress really rocks!  It is gorgeous!  It's packed w/WOW!  it's modern, vintage, yet classic, and classy.  Gosh, I can't say enough.

Your hair-do will define whether you are a 40's, 60's or 2010 bride!  Best of Luck!

Megan Rose, let us know which dress you decide upon.  This is so exciting, isn't it?!

I'm wearing a cocktail length dress (shorter than tea length) but I think if you're looking to just try it on and see how the look suits you before getting one made that trying on bridesmaids dresses is probably the easiest route to go. It seems that DB have lots of shorter BM dresses so I'd start looking there.

Thanks ladies!  I will definitely let you know what I choose.

@Tonya,  that dress is actually my top contender.  My only concern is price.  :)

Tonya2010 and Meganrose, That's the dress I'm about 95% sure I'm going to do!  I am totally in love with it and I think it will be perfect for our slightly vintage ranch wedding.   Are you both doing the coffee color?  Just curious.  I'm also concerned about price, however- it is about $250 more than I wanted to spend on a gown.  My plan is to sell it right after the wedding so I can recover at least some of the cost.  Meganrose, your wedding is far enough away that you may be able to buy one of these used after the 2010 wedding season.  I would totally do that, except that this dress just came out in 2010 so I won't likely be finding a used version.  I would offer to sell you mine after the wedding, but I'm only 5'3" so I think mine might run a little short on you :-).

However, any other brides who are getting married after Aug 22, 2010 and would like to do a dress share of this dress in a size 12, let me know!  Thanks ladies!

@huckleberry, I'm sure you'll find someone to buy it from you.  You being 5'3'' and me being 6' would really work out. :)

Has anyone tried on the Michelle Roth tea length dress from Kleinfeld's in NYC?  WIth the polka dots?  Does anyone know where in the $1,500-$3,000 price range it falls?

@ Huckleberry, I am doing mine in ivory. I really like the coffee color though. I got 20% off and free shipping because I bought it at a JA trunk show. It is the only dress that I tried on and knew that it was the one immediately.

    I ordered mine in a size 6 and I am 5'4. I haven't decided if I will sell mine afterward...probably not. =) I love it too much.

@Tonya2010, so, I did it, got the dress, in coffee!  I am so so so excited.  Also, after looking at lots of other dresses (and trying on some in the 2-3k range), I really think this one turned out to be a great value.  There is so much detail in the flowers/ beading.   I asked a seamstress on Etsy how muchi t would be to replicate it (I think she'll be doing my bm dresses, she's very good), she said right around $1k, which is about what I paid.  I do think, for that price, the workmanship is amazing.  It is very well made.

I think the ivory will be beautiful on you- please post pics when you get it!!  Sounds like you got an incredible deal on it, way to go!  Finally, I already mentioned this on another thrad, but I'd love to know what shoes you choose.  And hair, and jewelry........ :-)

    Yay!!

@ Huckleberry, YAY!! What fun!! I just love the dress! I think that it is so beautiful and I agree for the amount of detail it is a great price.

I have only ordered the dress. It should be in around the end of April/first of May. I think that I will wait and pick out my shoes and jewelry then. I am pretty sure that I am not going to wear a necklace. There is just a lot going on at the top of the dress, and I am not so sure that it needs a necklace. What do you think? I have seen some shoes that I like at Zappos. Maybe these:

    or these

Just now sure yet. It is hard, since they are going to show up so much. If you find anything good let me know. Maybe we can work on this together! LOL! =)

My hair is short. Not sure if I am going to let it grow out or not. I would like to let it grow out a bit I think and wear some antique/vintage hair pins/clips. What about you?

@Tonya2010 , wow, I love both pairs of shoes!  You'll have to try them on with the dress to be sure, but they are both cute.  I guess it depends on whether you want the embellishments at the heel or at the toe.  They may show up better on the toe....  but they are both so fun!

I will let you know when I get to the shoe point, but you're probably a bit ahead of me... my dress arrives in July (but I'll keep my eyes open in the mean time for sure!).

Re hair, I'm all about the vintage hair pins/ clips- I think the dress would go well with rhinestones, flowers, feathers, etc- anything with lots of bling!  I'm thinking of something along the same lines, but also probably incorporating a birdcage veil of sorts... I don't know, we'll see.  I have an appointment next week with a hair stylist to see about whether I'll need to grow out my hair or go short (for now it is at this wierd just-below-chin length).  I think there were some cute hair ideas in the most recent Martha Stewart weddings mag, I'll see if I can't find a link to what I'm talking about.

Finally, re necklace, I'm thinking about just a simple string of pearls... but I agree, there is plenty going on at the neckline so even that might be too much.

My big dilemma is what to do about flowers- I think it will have to be something super simple, as the dress itself is so intricate... what are you doing for flowers?  Anyhow, I'm so excited!  It is so fun to compare notes about this!  BTW, I posted pics of me in the dress (the sample one at the store) on this thread:

    http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/august-2010-brides-do-you-have-your-dress-yet/page/3

Be in touch with any great finds and I'll do the same!!!  yay!!!

@ Huckleberry, Wow!!! The dress looks awesome on you!! The pic close up of the bodice really shows how much detail there is! Thanks for posting it!

If you find that link from MS message it to me. I need some ideas for hair. =)

I think that simple pearls could work. You will know once you try on the dress with them.

Flowers....I have no idea! I have been thinking about this as well. I found this bouquet:

I kind of like it, but I am still not sure.

Staying in touch is a great idea!! =)

@meganrose - I am wearing the Maya. Picking it up from alterations at the shop in San Diego on Weds. Can't wait!!

I think the original price of this dress was around $2400. I bought it during a trunk show in Aug '08 (our wedding got postponed) and paid $1800 + tax.

    HTH!!

    Hi Ladies!

Just wanted to give you an update on my dress shopping.  I wasn't able to try on my favorite Justin Alexander because the place I had an appointment didn't carry short dresses!!!  Guess they aren't for everyone.

The dress shopping process was not really enjoyable and I had decided in the previous three months, that a short dress would not look right on me (I'm 6' tall and long torsoed).  Every time I have tried on "50's style" dresses before, I looked like I was trying on little girl dresses... so silly.

Anyways, with all the frustration of dress shopping, I decided before I left my last appointment for the weekend that I should at least try on one short dress, just to be sure.  So i did, at Priscilla of Boston.  And it was the one!

I'm so thrilled I went against my gut and tried it on.   I'm so excited to be part of the "tea-length dress group"! :)

Here's a photo of my dress, Taylor from the Priscilla of Boston Vineyard Collection.

@RetroSweetE:  Possibly.  If I do, you will be the first I contact.  I've tossed around the idea of finding a place that will dye it so that I can wear it again.  I think it would be a really great party dress post-wedding.
