I have two friends who both are about to start their first teaching jobs in a few weeks. One is a 7th grade math teacher, the other is middle/high school band. I want to get some fun stuff that will also be useful for them. For sure getting like a starbuck giftcard, but I am kind of at a loss as to what else. Would stuff like pens and dry erase markers be lame? I dont have a huge amount to spend but after how long they both looked for these jobs I wanted to do something to congradulate them.

My Mom is a teacher and she always appreciates little snack packs and gum. Pens, pencils, post-its are all good too.

Dry erase markers are good. I have toys/posters all over my room (I teach 9th grade) and it makes it more homey – it seems like each of us have a thing – mine is yoda, one teacher has Wonder Woman, one has hello kitty. iOS you could do something to “decorate” their classroom if they have a favorite character. Post its, fun binder clips and push pins.

I teach high school, and I’d would value hand sanitizer, advil, chocolate, and a coffee thermos.

I’m a high school teacher, and pretty much any office or school supply items are always welcome. We end up spending a lot of our own money on items to restock our supply over the year. We can never have enough pens, pencils, expo markers and paper clips. Hand sanitizer is also like liquid gold.

snacks that can be stored in a desk and eaten quickly, with no mess – when you’re starting out teaching it takes awhile to figure out when teachers ever get a chance to eat! I lived on muesli bars. don’t forget painkillers, too. a travel cup for coffee/tea is also good.
lots of whiteboard markers! and a set of stationary for their desk – all teachers need a glue stick, scissors, stapler and hole punch, and these items are ALWAYS being ‘borrowed’ by students and other teachers, so the more distinctive, the better. mine are bright pink and have my name written in silver permanent marker so I can look across a room and say ‘hey! isn’t that mine?’
don’t worry about getting things they might already have. more supplies are always good! lots of post its!

pretty office supplies: notebook, plastic envelop folders, academic diary – the cuter the better
