Go Conan! I'm so sick of Leno - can't he just give it up and retire already?!!!! I think he's totally acting like a toddler screaming in the middle of walmart "i don't WANNNNNNA give up my show yet!" :P
Eh, I don't like any of them, but I'm with Team Conan based on priniciple only!
People are being pretty unfair to Jay though. Conan is really struggling in the new time slot, and the NBC affiliates are screaming bloody murder. And Conan got a LOT of support from NBC when he first got started out.
I dunno. I really love Conan, but he's always bagging on NBC in his monologues. I've never liked that, especially since they stood by him for so many years early on when he was a nobody with no ratings. In some ways, I feel like Conan is getting his comeuppance for how he's treated them in his jokes.
Compare that to Jerry Seinfeld, who is very careful about how he talks about NBC. It's obvious that Jerry is very grateful to NBC for how they stood by his show when it struggled early on.
I love Conan, but I wish he hadn't bagged on NBC so much over the past decade. I never liked it when Letterman did it with CBS, and I feel the same way about Conan.
You know, I've never really watched either of them very much, but to be honest Conan always annoyed me for some reason. I used to like Leno a while ago and I watched his show every once in a while...it actually surprised me that so many people are against him now! I guess I just never paid much attention to all of it.
As long as I'm not forced to watch Letterman, either one is fine. Seems like it should be Conan's turn now though.
I voted team Conan on principle, but I really do like them both. I do think Jay's better suited for that 11pm ish timeslot... he appeals to the older peeps that watch those talk shows. I love Conan and prefer his comedy, but I think he appeals to my generation, and I don't watch late night talk shows and don't know many people in my generation (at least in my circle) that do. We have tivo, we're watching all the shows we missed during the day. I really don't give a crap about celeb interviews... I have perez hilton to get the real dirt, I don't care about the cleaned-up-PR-version of a celebrity interview!
Still, NBC made a promise... that's Conan's spot now. NBC made a poor gamble... 3 hours of late night talk show IN A ROW, all three similarly formatted? Too cheap to pick up a good drama or comedy show for the 10PM slot.
I know a lot of people that have worked with or for Jay, and everyone's said he is just the nicest guy ever. But, Conan deserves it more, because it was promised... plain and simple. He has every right to be totally pissed off, as he's in the right. I think Conan's best to take it to another network with his head held high.
I hesitate to tell Jay to retire... he's young and he's doing what he loves and gets paid for it! If he can pull in the ratings, then GO JAY! (And go Conan!)
Ha. What a weak answer on my part!
I don't think Leno is funny. At. All.
Conan all the way!
Also, I know some "insiders" and Leno is a mega-bratty-diva, I hear.
Conan is a dreamboat! Have you seen him on Martha? Bwahahaha, cracks me up everytime.
I think the ship sailed. The network gave The Tonight Show to Conan, and they should stand by him. Leno was killing the affiliates with his primetime show, so it had to be cancelled. That's just how the cookie crumbled, and I think the network should have ahd some integrity and honored their commitments. The host changes for the BIG late night shows (Tonight Show and Late Night) are a big deal, and they really didn't give Conan much time to pull in the next generation of the Tonight Show.
I think NBC just had a knee jerk reaction all those years ago when they worked out Conan's contract and scheduled Leno's exit. They didn't want to lose Conan, so they signed him early. The problem came when they didn't abide by that decision - Leno shouldn't have signed that change in contract if he wasn't dead sure he wanted to abide by it. Now, it's just a mess and an embarassment.
Conan. All the way. Mr. Bee, I really think all the stuff about conan ragging on nbc is really just part of hos whole self-depreication thing, which is a huge part of his act (and what makes him so likeable, imo). Jay just isn't funny, and he needs to give up his slot graciously.
Team Conan. I've watched him for years, he can always make me laugh! Fact is, NBC lied to him. They promised him the Tonight Show, then they just take it away and give it back to Jay because he's not doing well with the affliliates. Really? It just doesn't make any sense.
Leno is going to need to retire soon enough, so then NBC is going to be without Jay or Conan. Serves them right IMO! I'd love to see Conando on Fox, hopefully he gets something there!
I really love Conan, and how he bags on himself. But bagging on yourself feels different than bagging on a company that pulled you out of nowhere and stood by you for years!
Anyway I guess none of this matter... all the young kids are watching fake news shows now, like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. What a sea change!
I don't think Jay Leno is very funny. I personally really like Conan. He does rag on NBC a lot, but it sort of fits his act (like Mouse said).
@MrBee: I always took his ripping on NBC jokes the way that The Simpsons rip on Fox, just kind of a "Did they really just say that?" joke. Hmm... Conan used to write for the Simpsons... maybe there's some kind of a connection there ;)
