Teeth clenching/grinding = sore!

So FI has been gone on military deployment for 6 weeks and since he left I find myself with a sore jaw in the mornings.  I am prone to grinding/clenching my teeth at night at the best of times but it seems like since he left it's gotten WAY worse.  I've even noticed soreness at the back of my neck that seems to be linked to my overnight grinding/clenching.

He's not back until the start of February and I'm afraid I'll end up with little nubbins for teeth!  I bought a mouthguard at CVS but it's way too big for my mouth - and I bought a small (shocking to those who know me best!)  :0)

Does anyone else have this problem?  And if so, do you have any tips/advice?

    Thanks!

Oh no! That's awful - I do this too ... I am so not looking forward to it getting any worse! I am getting a retainer from my dentist made for this, actually - they'll form well to your mouth and aren't obtrusive/bulky.

I am a grinder as of about a year ago.  At the beginning of the summer I broke down and went to the dentist who suggested a night guard.  It's not bad - not as bulky as a mouthguard.  Though it does make me drool a little...

They are pricey (mine was like 400$) but worth it.  My front teeth had started to wear away and I figured a pricey mouthguard was better than having to do expensive dental work in the future.  Plus, my teeth hurt a ton, too!

Definately speak to a dentist. Even if you don't want to get one specially made for your mouth, they can tell you where to get a better one.

I have TMJ syndrome, and I also clench my teeth at night, so I hope that you can get this fixed soon, good luck!

At our local drugstore, it's a Walgreens but CVS should also have them - they have moldable mouth guards specially made for night grinding. Believe it or not you boil it to make it maliable and then you put it in your mouth to make it fit you perfectly. This really helped me when I was younger and had the same issue. They aren't cheap ($30 I think mine was), but they are specially designed and you mold it to your mouth's needs. Either way, even if it is $30 it's certainly less expensive, less painful and less stressful than a visit to the dentist or dealing with this issue. :) If you can't find what I'm talking about in the dental area of your drugstore, talk to the Pharmacist - they are always very helpful around here! Hope it helps!

Ugh. I just started clenching like 6 months ago. I don't think I grind in my sleep, but I'm not 100% sure. I don't know where this problem came from - so strange. But I will catch myself sometimes clenching so hard and I don't even realize I'm doing it. Sometimes, it's even hard to unclench when I try. No fun! My whole face ends up hurting.

I am a long-time grinder.  I have chipped my front tooth more than once and many of my teeth are various shapes now! (other people probably wouldn't notice but I can feel it)  I definitely suggest going to the dentist if you can afford to get one of the appliances they give you, they are very durable.  I have one of those for the bottom and I also wear one of the drugstore soft ones for the top (I couldn't afford to get a new one that protects my top teeth).  How is it too big?  If it is too wide, you should be able to bend it closer together after boiling it when you mold it.  If it is too long, you should be able to cut the back pieces shorter.

Ditto BrianaLaura - get something from the drugstore if the $200-$400 mouthguards from your dentist is a bit much.

I feel your pain, literally!  I have always been a grinder, but lately it's gotten much worse and the clenching is out of control.  I now have TMJ and horrible popping in my jaw on my right side.  My physical therapist suggested making sure to get plenty of excercise to get the stress out because you'll clench less at night.  That has really helped me.  I also bought one of those drugstore mouthguards for the time being until I can have the dentist make me a night guard.  Those expensive nightguards from the dentist are worth the cost because they are perfectly molded to your mouth, which prevents the misalignment of your jaw at night.  They also are made from a material that is slick and makes it difficult to clench as much.  And, they protect your teeth, enough said!

I think grinding and clenching is pretty common.  I have a nightguard from the dentist but it's not my favorite thing to wear.  It's not uncomfortable but I just don't like it.  Everytime I go to the dentist though they notice the wear on my teeth so I'm probably going to have to get better about wearing it.  I would try the drugstore guard and see if that is more comfortable (the one you boil and shape) and if not have the dentist make one for you.

I do this, too, actually have most of my life.  However, with me it comes in waves where I won't do it for a while, then I do it a lot.  I, too, need to break down and get something from my dentist because I like my teeth and don't want to wear then down to nothing.

It sounds like in your situation, like mine, this has gotten worse because of stress.  Is there anything you can do before bed that helps you relieve stress, e.g. meditate, drink tea, etc.?

Two solutions (I HOPE!) over the weekend - bought a sleeker mouthguard for overnight - it cost 35 euros but I'm hoping it's worthwhile. (had a dream it was really working well and actually took it out - couldn't find it this morning...)

AND I joined the gym - much needed on many levels  but I think it will be especially helpful to relieve stress.  First trip to the gym tonight in MANY moons so fingers crossed that it makes a difference to my teeth and the rest of me!  :0)

    Thanks girls!

I just got my guard from my dentist a few days ago.  It takes a little getting used to, but is way better than what I had from the drugstore.  Mine was about $150.

I work at a dentist office and I would definitely suggest that you get a Bite Splint.  It will help you a lot!

I think my nightguard was actually covered by my dental insurance. I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have dental insurance, but if you do, check it out... grinding can damage your teeth, so I guess it's in their interests to pay for the prevention rather than deal with the damage down the road.

I clench my teeth and didnt' realize it until 6 months ago.  My dentist didn't offer to make me a mouthguard (proabably because she knows it's expensive) but she suggested I buy Sleep Guard. I got mine from Target and it costs $30.  It's soft and works well, but the only thing is I clench/grind through those and have to replace them a little over 3 months.

I do! You can buy mouth guards at sports stores that you mold to fit your mouth. You could also ask your dentist. They can make them for you, or point you in a good direction to get one that fits.

I'm dental hygienist and suggest that you def see your dentist.  A custon made (but more expensive) nightguard is much better than a store bought one.  With a custon made one it is molded to fit your teeth exactly.  The best one would be soft on the inside to cushion and protect your teeth, and hard on the outside so your opposing teeth will grind into that.

For those that have one and they are uncomfartable, bring it with you time you visit the dentist so we can evaluate them and make sure they fit, if not we can always adjust them.  Also we can clean them up in our ultrasonics!

Since it is stress related, have you tried working out to relieve your stress?

Mini Update - asked my brother to ask his wife about the dentist office where she works to see what it would cost to do a mouthguard (since I live overseas I don't have US insurance).  My sister in law works at the dentist where I went my whole life (hence how my brother met her) and because we're now 'family' I got the family discount and got a custom kick butt mouthguard for 200 dollars instead of 500!  Yay!  It's great so far and hopefully I'll get to keep my teeth for a long long time and won't grind them into oblivion!

Thanks for all your tips ladies.  Between the mouthguard and managing stress with works outs etc... I think it will be just dandy  :0)

Good for you :)  Hopefully that helps you.  I am a teeth clencher... I do it in my sleep and even during the day.  I feel your pain!

How did they make you a custom nightguard if you live oversees? Did the office have your stone models to use? You're lucky it fits! Glad it worked out for you. Store bought ones are definitely not the same.

I was home for CHristmas (left that part out!) and my former dentist was able to take a mold and get the mouthguard before I had to come back - it was great!  And it's so much better than the store-bought ones I've chewed through ;0)

If my luggage  had been searched the customs officers would have been very surprised to find the molds of my upper and lower teeth amid gifts from my bridal shower...now to figure out where to store the molds...maybe on the mantel in the living room???  :oD

One thing that helps me sometimes is putting a heating pad on my jaw for a few minutes before bed.  Someone explained to me that the grinding and clenching happens because your jaw muscles are trying to relax, so a little heat can aid that process before you fall asleep.

    I hope something helps!
