We had a casual backyard wedding in my in- laws gorgeous yard a year ago, our guests loved it. One of my dear friends became engaged shortly after and also decided to have backyard festivities at her parents home. We went to her wedding about a month ago, it was lovely, relaxed, perfect. I am a big fan of  simple backyard weddings, and hers was my favorite (besides my own!)  of the ten weddings I have attended in the last two years.   A close second was a recent wedding on a secluded beach  in KauaI that was like attending a casual beach party with tons of food, drink, hula dancerS.  I have been to some super elegant, formal, sitdown dinner weddings with huge bridal parties and all the traditional trappings;  I don’t really love this kind of event.

spezia:  I am a huge fan of weddings where the ceremony and reception are at the same venue.  Throw in a hotel that is nearby and things could not be any easier or more pleasant.  I am also a fan of open har and a great band.  Options for entree are also a crowd pleaser.

A happy, relaxed bride and groom, fitting ceremony, enough food/drink for amount of people, a comfortable venue, (not too hot/cold, loud, etc.) good music to dance to, and the shoe game 😉  IMHO it doesn’t have to cost a lot!

There is old post has an explanation and some photos too.  Just do wedding shoe game search.  (I can’t seem to paste the post here).  Very cute/fun to watch. If you don’t have a dj that knows it, maybe you could have your mom and his dad come up with fun questions to surprise you with?!

Also, maybe you could find a park to have your wedding in, since you don’t have family with a backyard?  If you want to PM me, with details, I could help you if you like.

Make sure you have the basics covered: a/c or heat, adequate bathrooms, food and drink that is inclusive of any and all dietary restrictions people may have, location is wheelchair-accessible, free parking, etc.  I also tried to work out a seating chart so that young people were sitting together, family that didn’t get along were seated separately, etc.  I didn’t want anyone to feel left out.

ETA: Oh, and then the obvious but often overlooked: give everyone a plus one.

I think the best weddings are when you can really tell the bride and groom are truly in love. FI’s best friend got married and their vows made me cry, they were that sweet.

Also, if you are having an evening reception – make sure there is enough food for people to be satisfied. I went to a wedding recently and was starving by the time we left due to the lack of food. If you expect your guest to be with you from 330 pm to 11 pm, at least feed them.

spezia:  best wedding: very relaxed, not super formal, lots of good food, the booze was flowing, and everyone was on the dance floor all night.

It was not by any means fancy – almost everything was DIY, including the food, and the reception was at an annex of the Ukrainian Orthodox church where the couple married. I’ve been to a $$$ weddings at 5 star hotels that were not nearly as much fun.

I like this question! Best wedding for me was a Maggiano’s reception, which is why I decided to have mine there! The food was amazing and the DJ was really good.  We didn’t get bored at all!

I would say good tasting food, music to dance, and climate (extreme heat or cold) consideration.

spezia:  as a guest, I would have to say my SIL – everything was perfect. The food, the music, on top of that I was with family so it was easy for DH & I to have fun and dance and be ourselves.
