I am ordering a longline bra right now and am debating if I should wear spanx too. I actually have a fitting on Saturday so I’m ordering via Amazon Prime, and I’m ordering 7 sizes (yes, SEVEN) and they have free returns so whatever doesn’t fit, I’ll just return.
Spanx + Longline bra seems like it will be basically impossible to go to the bathroom. And with an a-line dress, I’m not sure I really need the spanx?
What are you wearing under your dress? Bonus points for links!

I will most likely be wearing basic high waisted spanx (like below) that go over my inner thighs so I dont get irritation where my inner thighs meet. Whatever dress I get will be a corset or altered into a corset so I will not be wearing any sort of bra because with a corset, I wont need one lol 🙂

I used both. kept everything in place and i was comfy!

Well, if you get real spanx not knockoff, there is an area that opens to pee, but you’d still have an issue if you needed to #2.

Comfort for me was one of the most important things. I chose an A-line dress that kept me from needing serious support garments — I wore a pair of Lane Bryant high-leg/high-waist briefs, and that with the boning in my dress kept everything smoothed out nicely. My strapless bra was a Victoria’s Secret Bombshell — serious push-up situation to fill everything out and keep my curves balanced.
I was a bit concerned about sweating and chafing for my upper thighs for our outdoor June wedding, but 1) we got a lovely sunny but not humid day, and 2) I applied a bunch of anti-chafe gel to my upper thighs, and everything felt silky smooth all day!

I have an Elomi long-line bra – this one:
But I’m thinking of getting the Goddess 689 as well, since I’ve heard great things about them:
Goddess Lace Longline Bra GD689 – Goddess Bras
On the bottom half, probably Spanx or shapewear pants, but they would have to be neither long leg nor too high wasted to prevent bathroom difficulties.

I’m only wearing a longline bra and regular panties. I like the way spanx feel (support is good!) but my skirt is poofy enough that it wouldn’t make a difference in looks and its just one more thing to move when I have to pee. Longline bras suck you in on the waist, so as long as your skirt isn’t tight on the booty/legs, I don’t think you’ll need the spanx, too.

Thanks for the responses! I ended up ordering both and we’ll see how I like them together versus separate. Depending on how long the bra is, it could work beautifully or I could feel like I need the Spanx. My abdomen is a real challenge area and if the long-line bra hits at the wrong spot, it could make it worse. BUT – the A-Line dress is so good for concealing those things!
My first fitting is tomorrow… nothing like procrastinating (I couldn’t find my tape measure). Thank goodness for Amazon Prime. I ordered SEVEN sizes of long-line bras! One of them must fit, right? And free returns 🙂

@NAvery: let us know how it works out as I am wondering the same thing!

Okay, Spanx and longline bras came today.
#1. Finding a longline bra that fits is tough. I know that centerpiece is supposed to lay flat against your chest between the girls, but it just… doesn’t. The boning sort of bends outwards a little bit. With it being lower in the back, I just don’t see how it could stay tight like that. BUT, the bra fits and with my style of dress (has straps), it is going to be fine. If I lived in a big city with a great plus-size corset shop, I probably could find something better, but it’s good enough for now. I actually would prefer having a real corset that laces up in the back because you can let it looser over the stomach (my problem area) and tighter up top, but I couldn’t find any in my size/white/etc.
#2. LOVE the Spanx. Okay, getting them on is a total PITA. But once they are on, honestly, they are really comfortable and they make the longline bra more comfortable too. It helped me put the bra on backwards and then be able to turn it around, and it sort of just seems to make the bra sit smoother and move more naturally. I tried it both ways and was more comfortable with the Spanx, even though I don’t know that they made much impact on my dress.

Exactly the same as this lovely bee! 🙂 high-waisted spanx, and no bra at all because my corset-back dress was built so beautifully that I won’t need one even with 36DDDs.
@NAvery: Glad to hear you found a solution! May I ask what kind of Spanx you ordered?

For my strapless a-line dress I wore a long line bra and a long control-top slip. And since it was an outside ceremony and we were planning on taking about 2 hours of outdoor photos I also wore a pair of blue athletic shorts under my slip much to my mother’s chagrin (something blue!). You couldn’t see them (no bunching, etc) and it made me laugh to think about them under there. It also protected me from inner-thigh chafing which for me is THE WORST of all.
