Sitting in one of the restaurants overlooking the naval ships while eating sushi.
Padres stadium.
Coronado and Carlsbad beaches.
Balboa Park was gorgeous - i'd get married there.
And i've only been there once lol ;)
We're heading there for part of our honeymoon as well!
My roommate is from San Diego so I've been picking her brain about what she suggests, among them: The Civic Theatre, Museum of Man, Natural History Museum (though she says it's not as good as it used to be since they remodled), the Zoo... basically Balboa Park in all ( I don't expect to really go anywhere else as we'll only be in the city for 2.5 days)
DH and I are foodies. If you love good food make sure you head to the Gaslamp Quarter. There are some amazing places to dine there. We loved Searsucker as well as Nobu. Lots of great little shops for momentos and things as well.
The Zoo really is the best! The shopping and galleries in La Jolla are fantastic and you must take a visit into Old Town.
Balboa Park is a must see.
My fiance is from SD and although I have only been there once to meet some of his family there is SO much to do and see!
Definetly take the ferry from dowtown SD over to Coronado (visit the beach and Hotel Del) and back. It's very cheap. Go to a Padres game. Visit La Jolla beaches. The Zool. I could name so many things :)
La Jolla Cove to see the seals:

Near the La Jolla Cove is the Contemporary Art Museum:

Stroll along Balboa Park Promenade including Botanical Building and Lily Pool:
Drive along Sunset Cliffs and catch the sunset:
Point Loma Tide Pools:

Cardiff Friendship Garden is small but very pretty, and free:
I heart the ZOO and La Jolla Cove. It's so awesome to see the seals in the wild! I know that someone said "no" to Sea World, but if you've never been I would go!
I grew up in SD, La Jolla is beautiful. The Coronado beach is a must see, the gold glittery sand is what insipred the yellow brick road in The Wizard of Oz. As previously stated the tide pools are awesome if you guys are into that kind of thing. Sea Port Village is a fun little place to grab lunch do a some shopping and look out onto the ocean. The zoo and wild animal park are really fun too!
@Bride2BJuly2011: YAY!!!!!!!! There's a ferry!!!!!! Duh, I should have expected that but I wasn't for sure! Great, this is added to the list for sure. OH, thanks you guys are the best!
I love the gaslamp district for dinner and night time entertainment. The marriott gaslamp has a great rooftop bar that also has a great view of Padres stadium games. Old town has great mexican food and history
@mwitter80: GIRL!!!! I just looked up both places to dine. YUMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! They're both going on my list! Thanks, foodie friend :) LOVE IT!
@H216scrf: Thank you!!!!! Y AY!!!!!!! The Garden is added to the list! :)
@rosegirl : YES, the tide pools look incredible. We don't get those in Wi you know :)
@15happyyears: Def going to check out the rooftop bar and yum, you can never go wrong with mexican food! :) Thanks guys!!!!!
we went to SD two summer ago for a week. We rented a house a block from the beach in Pacific Beach. Some of my favorites that week:
heading out onto crystal pier everynight to watch the sufers in the water, going to the different bars and restaurants in PB, walking down from PB to mission beach for the amusement park. We only spent one day in downtown area and it was a PACKED day. we went to the zoo, took the ferry out to coronado island and went to Coronado brewing company, walked down to Hotel Coronado hotel. Went into Old Town for some great mexican food and tequilla! We also rented a car one day and drove up the coast a bit to visit Oceanside and some of the other bars/restaurants up there. There's a lot of breweries along the coast too (Whcih we're in to) so we went to Stone Brewery in Escondido. BUt, really, most of our time was spent lounging on the beach and watching the sunset. I LOVE san diego.
Coronado Island! Awesome place! great restaurants and the gas lamp district isn't too far away if you want some awesome bars. :)
@muckmoo1: WE Def have that on the list, girl! We are so excited to check out the awesome bars, too! Thanks so much !!! :)
Since no one has thrown in a dessert place, there's a famous place in SD that is very, very good. There are 2 locations now, one in downtown near the gaslamp and the other (original and more cute than modern like the downtown location) is very close to the Zoo/Balboa Park. It's called Extraordinary Desserts....and they truly are (although maybe not great if you are training, haha).
You can work off the calories walking/running/hiking at Torrey Pines if you are near La Jolla and are looking for something a little more nature-y. It's a beautiful state park with pines on bluffs running down to the beach.
And just timing-wise, plan a day for the zoo. It is really great, but there is a lot of other stuff to do at Balboa Park if you like museums. The area basically covers any interest from photography to modern art to a fabulous japanese garden. So be sure to check what time stuff closes if you try to pack it in with zoo. Otherwise, I'd say give yourself another day to wander leisurely between the museums.
I live in San Diego and I'm a foodie, so here are a couple of yummy places I would suggest checking out...
- Cucina Urbana (North Park) - yummy new Italian style food, fun ambiance
- Starlite (Mission Hills) - delicious cocktails
- Shakespeare's (Mission Hills) - fun English pub with lots of beers on tap and good food
- Blind Lady Ale House - great beer and food
- Blue Water Grill - amazing seafood
- Cafe Chloe - romantic, delicious French cuisine
- Point Loma Seafood - great place for lunch, if you like seafood of course :)
- Hodad's (ocean Beach) - yummy burgers
riding beach cruisers along the beach
balboa park, especially on Tuesdays when there are free museums.
happy hour in Old Town
I secod @shavri! I went to college in San Diego and still remember how delicious Extraordinary Desserts is! Go to the one in Hillcrest (on 5th Street) - the area is so much fun!
I second @shavri! I went to college in San Diego and still remember how delicious Extraordinary Desserts was! Go to the one in Hillcrest (on 5th Street) - the area is so much fun!
hello! this is my first post on a the wedding bee board. born and raised in san diego (and still here), i feel obligated to post. i'd recommend the following:
restaurants:
oceanaire (http://www.theoceanaire.com) - really good seafood restaurant in the gaslamp area. it's in the higher end of price range, but worth it! when you call to make a reservation, tell them you're there for your honeymoon and they may make you a specialized menu and give you a baked alaska for dessert (make sure you leave space b/c it's huge!). also they have a really cute bathroom.
cucina urbana (http://www.cucinaurbana.com/about-2) - california/italian style food and wine shop in bankers hill near downtown. try the bread pudding if offered and make reservations! unless you get there right when it opens for dinner, it gets pretty busy.
bars & nightlife - bar hop in north park or downtown and stop by these places:
true north (http://www.truenorthtavern.com) - tavern in north park. haven't been in a while (don't really go out much anymore), but it was poppin'.
analog bar (http://analogbar.com) - bar in downtown. it's divided into two rooms where one room has a dance floor. depending when you go, there can be a cover.
tourist spots: balboa park for museums, coronado island for the beach, and old town for mexican food.
last but not least, a true MUST: go to a hole-in-the-wall taco shop and order carne asada fries. i know you're trying to stay fit, but you can share it with your hubby. and possibly 3 other people.
have fun!!
I live in so cal and I absolutely love San Diego. I agree with mwitter80:, I love Balboa park and the zoo. Sea World is fun too. Besides what everyone else said. I suggest doing some fun activities like, sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, or biking along the beach. http://www.sandiego.org/article_set/Visitors/27 - this site will tell you where you can do these things or rent the bikes, wave runners, kayaks...
You're going to have so much fun!

Hello bees! My fiance and I decided we would take a short honeymoon after all. We were going to wait until Jan-Feb since we have a very busy summer filled with training. I'm doing my 3rd Ironman in Sept and we will be in primetime training mode by wedding time. BUT we decided to just go. We both love CALI almost more than each other.......ok just kidding, but we do just love it there. I went to school at Berkeley and lived in Albany. So, we're headed back to SD instead of SF this time. I've only been to SD once, with my brother's marine graduation SO, please:
Tell me your favorite thing to do in San Diego !!!!!!
We're staying at the Hilton Spa and Resort on Mission Bay!!!! Eekkkkkkkk :)
We have the zoo on our list now let's hear your favorite things!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Bees! :)
