Everyone keeps telling me to go check out temp agencies, they will help you get a job. Well a couple months ago, I called all the local staffing agencies in my area like Randstad, Kelly Services, etc. I asked if I could come in and talk to someone about trying to find a job. They all told me “Oh you don’t need to come in, just apply online!”
So I did. And guess what? I did not get a single job lead from them. Not one. I apply to jobs on their website and I never hear anything back.
To me, these temp agencies are NOT helpful. But I don’t know, maybe I’ve just had a bad experience. Have anyone used a staffing agency before? Did it work? And if so, which one did you use?

LadyBlackheart: Yes, you do set up a profile online with these agencies and then I think (if I remember right) you apply for jobs through your profile and their site. Then when one comes up they’ll have you come in. Are you in a small area? I’ve gotten 2 permanent jobs (including the one I’m in now) by starting in the temp agency. The most recent one I went to was Office Team.

I am currently with a temp agency and they have been absolutely fantastic! As a recent college graduate they were able to find me a job in my interest field. I’ve been with this job now for 6 months and have been told that they’d like to keep me on if a permanent job comes around. Even if it doesn’t the agency has promised to have me in a new position by the time this one ends. The best part is I’ve gained the experience necessary to apply for outside jobs now, something I had practically no shot at if I hadn’t gone with the temp agency.
So it’s turned out to be an awesome decision for me, and has given me much needed experience and contacts. That being said I’ve also had friends try with other agencies that were total flops. So I think it really just is about finding the right agency. I’m currently with Robert Half. They’re wonderful and are currently looking for my permanent position!
Another thing I would add is that a lot of companies will hire solely through temp agencies, so by being with them you gain access to those companies and have a much higher shot of being hired by them. Sorry I typed a novel, I just had a really good experience and wanted to share!

I used a staffing agency once, Abigail Abbott (which Google tells me is now Abbott Staffing Group). But it was through a Craigslist posting and I had no idea it wasn’t a direct hire. They had me come in to the office and meet with the recruiter, like an informal interview, and then she set up the interview for me at the actual company. I ended up getting the job and stayed on their payroll for the probationary 90 days before getting hired on with the company. I worked there for two years, so it was a positive experience for me.

I haven’t heard of these agencies mentioned, are they national chains? Should I try to find a smaller agency that isn’t a chain?
And to the PP who asked, I’m not exactly in a small area. I’m in the suburbs, you could say.

LadyBlackheart: Abbott Staffing Group is somewhat of a chain, but from their website I only see offices in California. I’m not sure if they work nationally.
I have heard of Kelly Services, and my husband got a job through them many many years ago. But it was a referral so I’m sure that made it easier for him.

LadyBlackheart: My FI works for months at a time in other parts of the world, then he is home for months at a time with not much to do. Occasionaly he will get a temp job. He always just goes to the site and sets up a profile, then you typically have to go in and actually apply for jobs they have listed. You don’t just set up the profile and then expect to hear from them.

Some companies hire ONLY thru temp agencies. They let the temp agency interact with thr candidates and trust them to select the best qualified ones for temp positions. I’ve done this with two different companies and been hired on full time twice.
It’s important to treat a staffing company with as much utmost professionaliam as u would show a hiring manager. They r paid by the company, not u! So they r looking for the best fit for the company foremost, but as well as finding u a position.
It can be an easier way to job search, as it is a place to find definite open positions instead of blindly applying straight to companies’ HR dept.
