FI and I dropped about $2,000 on a new mattress set ONE YEAR ago.  We splurged for the Spring Air Four Seasons mattress.  We didn't do research and have found that our wonderful comfortable mattress now sags in the middle (we literally roll into each other), Spring Air has gone completely out of business, and JC Penny where we bought it has a 7 day return policy.

Needless to say, we are not happily going to invest in a new mattress set.  We want something that will last us at least 5-7 years, that will not sag, and preferably that doesn't move when the other person does.

This time, I have done my research and found that the memory foam and latex mattresses seem the way to go.

Is the Tempurpedic mattresses worth it?  Are there other brands that are just as good but cheaper?

I would appreciate any first hand experience with them.

    Thanks ladies!

Our good friends love theirs - and had we not also jsut bought a new bed two years ago, I would be saving my pennies now!  We got lucky and our bed is still real comfy!  Disclaimer?  I don't actually own one and haven't slept on one, either.  I did however lay on one for almost 10 minutes last weekend at a furniture store and it was HEAVEN.

Also, the one we test drove in store was this one - the TEMPUR-Cloud:

My husband and I bought the "Cloud" Tempurpedic mattress set about a month and a half ago.  (It was a wedding present to ourselves.)  WE LOVE IT!!!  We both sleep really well, but the down side is that I never want to get out of bed in the morning.  They have a 20 year warranty (as long as you keep the tags on it), and there is a 90 day "test" period.  If you don't like it, return it no questions asked and you don't owe them anything.  It took me a couple nights to get use to, but my husband didn't have any problems adjusting.  If you have the $$$ buy a Tempurpedic, it's the best money we've ever spent.

We bought a king sized Natura natural latex mattress (+ boxspring) for $3000 CAD last year. It is totally wonderful. It feels like memory foam but it's actually memoryless, which supposedly means it will last even longer (they claim 20+ years) and won't sag because, well, it's memoryless. It pops back to its original form again and again. It's really comfy and when my boyfriend moves I don't feel it at ALL. Just typing about it makes me want to go take a nap in it. :P

Plus it's made from natural materials and is better for your health, and the environment, than your typical petrochemical based mattresses. I highly recommend it!

My parents just got a "sleep number" bed... they RAVE about it! They are so thrilled! My dad can't wait for his visits home from London to sleep in it, and get's better sleep in it with his horrible back conditions than any bed he's ever tried. My parents also can sleep in the same bed for the first time since I was about 5.... lol.

They're so thrilled with it, they want to get us a king for a wedding present...

They've only had it less than a year though so I can't attest to their durability...

I had a sleep number bed, king size.  It was great for the first year or so.  BUT after about three or four years, the foam which separates the two sides (your air side, his air side) sags and you roll into the middle.  They don't sell replacement guides, or it could be an easy fix I suppose.  But I was upset that it cost so much and didn't last very long.

@ Mrs. Louboutin: I have the Four Seasons mattress that you have and I LOVE IT. OMG. I've had it for about 3 years and it doesn't sag in the middle at all? Is it possible yours just has a defect? I'm not sure if it would make a difference or not in trying to return or replace it but I've had a wonderful experience with my mattress. It's incredible.

That said, my parents have a Tempur Pedic and it makes me hot! I'm a very hot-natured person and the fact that the mattress hugs your body always makes me hot-- I feel like I'm sinking into quicksand, hahaha.

@texaslawgirl: I was JUST going to get back on her and ask about that!  I have heard that Tempurpedic mattresses (and the like) "sleep hot" due to the fact that there is nowhere for the heat to go.  (As opposed to a box spring mattress that has lots of air flow and breathing room inside the mattress.)

I've also heard that the mattress is firmer when it's cold and softer when it's warm.  Does anyone know if that is true?

My parents have a tempurpedic. Sometimes I take naps on it b/c it is so comfortable (shh, don't tell them, hehe).

@MightySapphire: I've heard that too, and I have noticed that it does get squishier when your body warms it up.

I have the Ultimate by Dormia. I have had it for about 2 years now. I LOVE IT! It has a 20 year warranty. If it sags by even 1/4 inch they replace it. Woot Woot! It is made from Visco Elastic Memory Foam and Eco-Friendly 100% Dunlop Latex. It helps regulate your temp. my hubby gets so freaking hot, that regular tempur pedics make him too hot. It is also hypoallergenic, anti-microbial and naturally dust mite, mold and mildew resistant. Now that I finished hocking the product. We got ours and it was the best bed decision we ever made. Look around, and read a bunch of reviews and find out what is best for yall!

@TexasLawGirl - Which Four Seasons mattress?  We have the Ultra Plush (whatever is the most plush version), which I think is part of the problem.

It's strange because neither of us even weigh that much.  From the research I have been doing, the real plush mattresses are the ones that seem to have a penchant to sag in the middle, but we have only have it I year. I'm 120-125 lbs depending on the day and my FI is around 180.

Here are the some of the reviews I read after I started waking up in awful back pain (when I could sleep that is):

    http://www.epinions.com/review/Spring_Air_Back_Supporter_Four_Seasons_Mattress/content_68881059460

Spring Air has since gone out of business and while there is a new company, I have not received any response back to try and get this either replaced/ fixed or something.

The "sleeping hot" worries me.  We live in So Cal, so even in the winter, it never gets that cold and in our condo, we actually always keep the A/C on.  Even in the winter.  We both get hot at night.  Also, I have read that if you don't weigh at least 140 lbs, the memory foam doesn't really work.  I haven't tested it out in a store yet, so I have no idea if this is even accurate.

We actually bought a memory foam mattress from overstock.com for an awesome price and I can't even begin to explain how much I love it. We have had it for two years now and it is exactly the same as when we bought it. Now whenever we go home to visit our parents we wake up with sore backs because we are so spoiled with our memory foam lol. I decided for our guest bedroom I'm going to buy a memory foam mattress topper because every time anyone came to visit at our apartment they would fight over who had dibs on the bed. I look forward to moving into the new house with a guest bedroom and not having to sleep on the couch just because we have guests over lol :)

I dont know which Mattress I have exactly because I bought it over a year ago but it is a  King Size Sealy  Posturpedic .. and it has a memory foam pillow topper  that is about 6 inches thick but still has the spring mattress uneath it for better support. The mattress itself is super super thick & weighs a ton.... my mattress is probably 18-20  inches thick you also dont ever Flip this one you just rotate it around like clockwise. I want to say I paid around $1,800 on sale for it at Grand Home Furnishing (dunno if you have those) My Mattress is in perfect shape... I do reccomend getting low profile box springs if you are on the shorter side though because The mattress itself is pretty thick.

I love it...It is soft and smushy but still gives a firm support. My Fiance when I first moved in didnt like it.... he had a really old crappy worn out spring mattress & he complained that my mattress didnt give enough. I personally felt like I was sleeping on a trampoline when i slept with him in his bed. I felt every move he made.

    Thanks for the advice ladies!

The Four Seasons Mattress we have is one sided, meaning it can't be flipped over.  Last night, we did turn it so that the indendations where our weight was was moved from the head of the bed to the foot of the bed.  We are hoping to get another 6 months or so out of it this way.

After this, I think we are going to invest in a Temperpedic type mattress.

@bloodgo - what is the mattress that you bought from overstock?

We got a Sleep to Live bed- best investment ever!! It's like a glorified Sleep Number bed but you and the hubby lay down on this test mattress and then they pick what color you are based on your preferences and how you sleep and then they custom make your bed so if you like a pillow top but your hubby likes a firm bed they can make it half and half!!  I know they sell them at Sleeps and ours like was $2200

My husband and I were both green so we have a pillow top mattress but my sister was orange which is plush top and her husband was blue which is firm so half their mattress is firm and other half is plush top it's crazy and the mesh it together perfectly in the middle and it doesn't sag at all.

I'm in the sleep number camp. My parents bought one about 5 years ago and they still love it. They have no problems with the foam and it has helped my mother's back tremendously.

I have a 4" memory foam topper. It goes on top of our queen pillow top mattres. We tried out temperpedic beds and found that we couldn't tell the difference between the FULL memory foam mattress and the 4" topper. I just couldn't justify a few thousands when the topper was like $250 and it felt the same to us!

@KLP2010- We've had the bed about 4 months- it's the best sleep I've ever had!! I'm serious- I have sleeping problems and insomnia and I sleep like a baby in this bed. I will never try another kind of mattress! Plus it has a 20 yr warranty on it and as long as the mattress isn't damaged (ie your dog chewed on the corner) they will replace the whole thing!

Oh and we got it a Sleepy's is what I meant to say in my first comment

We just bought a Simmons Beautyrest (Galen eurotop) ...FI did tons of research. This model the closest thing to the Heavenly bed in the hotel chains. (Same company too).  We just had 3 glorious nights of rest on it. It seems very 'foamy' but I couldn't tell you the construction. It was on Sears for half off) so I was very skeptical  but it is awesome!!  Can move around and my light sleeper hubby is sound asleep.

My baby brother bought a Tempurpedic after hurting his back weight-lifting. He seems to like it, so when we needed to upgrade our mattress, I looked into it.

For awhile, I was obsessed with finding the best option for us. After reading about Tempurpedics and other comparible (less expensive) brands, I decided on a topper instead.

I read a few critizims on getting it a full memory foam mattress: it's too thick and doesn't give enough support, too expensive, and gets too warm. I've read that getting a topper works best - it provides some support, yet still retains the qualities of memory foam. But it shouldn't be under 3" because it won't offer enough benefits. They say it's really based on weight and how you sleep (on your side vs your back), but generally the rule is nothing thinner than 3". The density or quality of the memory foam is also very important. Temurpedic products are high in quality, but also carries the hefty price-tag.

We ended up buying a 4" Serta Memory Foam Topper on Overstock. It was cheap enough to experiment with and nice enough to last awhile in case we really do like it. The density was also decent and better than some other more expensive brands I found on larger retail stores. We've had it now for 6-months and LOVE IT!

My only regret was not buying the matching goose down cover to go with it! Now they're all out and I'm gonna have to pay full-price somewhere for it! The price is cheap because it's pure memory foam without a cover. Our bed is so comfy I often miss it when we're on vacation! I can't recommend it enough!

I should add that a topper works best on a hard mattress (what the Fi already had).

The hubs and I purchased a Sealy Posturpedic (tempurpedic version) for us and one for his father. I absolutely love ours. Every regular mattress I have ever slept on has always given me back pain due to my back arching from my booty (no joke). My hubby also has a degenerative disc disease and he also feels no pain when he sleeps on this mattress. Sometimes when his back starts hurting him, he lays on the bed and the pain seems to go away for the time being. Now we picked up the same mattress for my FIL because of the many strokes he had which has caused some pain to his body obviously. Since he has been sleeping on the mattress, he has raved about it. He suffers from less pain altogether.

So I have had my mattress for about 4 years now and the shape is still the same and it is just as comfy as it was from day one.

I think the only thing I can say about it that is a disadvantage is that it may hold the heat but the temp in the room has to be hot, like when our power went out for an hour during a 94 degree humid day... Oh and whatever you do, don't belly flop on those mattresses. My sister learned the hard way, lol.

Mr DGs dad bought a tempurpedic mattress for his back problem (multiple back surgeries, fused vertebrae) and absolutely can't sleep in it.  We tried it out and I felt suffocated in it, so it didn't work well for us either.  We love our mattress though.  We just got back from vacation and stayed in some great beds, but the best part of coming home for us is our fabulous mattress.  We got a nice Sealy posturepedic (non tempurpedic) and we follow the manufacturer's instructions about rotating the mattress every 6 months.

I also think that pillowtops get sag faster than other mattresses, so we stayed away from those.

5 yrs on the tempurpedic and i love it. wouldn't change it for anything. it doesn't sag, doesn't need to be flipped, is hypoallergenic and it has a 20yr warranty. it is quite expensive though, but they sell tempurpedic overlays (it's like a foam topper, but with the same viscoelastic materials as the full blown mattresses) for a few hundred bucks. might be work considering if you dont' want to spend thousands on the real thing.

Personally, the worst sleep I ever had was on a memory foam bed.  I too experienced that suffocating effect and it definitely slept "hot" for me - which I hate.  And I was in Southern California at the time.  My neck/back was also completely messed up the next morning so I think it's probably truly a matter of taste and comfort specific to the individual.

We bought a Healthwise memory foam bed (they sell them at American Furniture, we got the best one and the set came to about $700) . Same style as the temurpedic but much less expensive. We have had this set for about a year now and it is amazing. i have awful back issues and have been unable to find a way to get rid of the chrornic pain for as long as I can remember, and am pretty sure I am going to need surgery for it.  All I have to do now is go lay on  the bed for a few hours, an it is gone!

Good luck with your new set! I am sure if you buy one of the brands like sleepnumber, tempurpedic, etc. you shouldn't ever have a problem like that again. Let us know how it all turns out!

We had the same sagging prob with our matress (my FI is MUCH bigger then i am) We went thru 2 matress in 2 years! They were pillow top not sure which brand.

What i Decided to do was buy a firm mattress non-pillow top and them bought a memory foam 4" topper. Now we can rotate the bed and if the topper starts to get smushed  or anything all we'll have to do is buy a new topper!

Okay...this might be sort of off-topic for the post, but I just have to ask--- I have also been interested in the Tempurpedic, having laid on a friends bed for about 10 minutes a few months back. I remember at the time thinking it was amazingly comfortable...but also having this overwhelming feeling that 'getting busy' on the bed would be nearly impossible. Even rolling over to get out of the bed felt like work....I couldn't imagine actually doing it....I feel like your weight and body heat would just make you sink right in.

My parents had one and my mom didn't like it, it made her too hot, however she's at that life stage where she's having hot flashes. It's now on the guest bed. I like the Tempurpedic a lot, it's comfy and I don't feel my husband move.

We're in the market for a new mattress, too, and have been considering the Tempurpedic line. We've only had our Sealy (which has a foam pillowtop) for about 4 years, and it is sagging horribly. We are laying on top of each other.

We are also worried about getting hot on the Tempurpedic because I am like an oven at night. I've been trying to find a reason for us to visit a Westin hotel so he can feel the Heavenly bed. I stayed at Essex House in NYC and that bed was awesome!

Okay, here's what I want to know about the tempurpedic.. Do you sweat in the summer?  It's made out of foam, and foam is SO hot in the summer!  Is it super duper warm to sleep on?  We don't use our AC and I was curious.  The FI would LOVE one of these eventually.

We looked all over for the perfect mattress, and found out the little tricksies give their mattresses different names at different stores.  For example, a Vera Wang "Bamboo" at Mattress R US might be the Vera Want "Doodle" at Mattress King, etc. This is extreemly frustrating and impossible to compare prices.

So I did some research and found the $3000 Stearns and Foster we tried at Mattres Firm online at US Mattress.com for like $1200. (I used a grid I found online where someone was trying to crack the code, so there were actually only about 10 different models with about 100 different names for each manufacturer) Seriously, shop around.  Buy online if you can.  The brick and mortar stores will totally take you for a ride, unless you do your homework.

We went for a combo of different kinds of foam and enclosed springs.  We love our be soooooooo much and getting into it every night is a total treat.

ALSO mattresses with ANY foam will have off-gassing.  We thought we had a stinky mattress at first, but it totally goes away after a day or two.  So don't freak if your mattress smells a little foamy to begin with.

I am editing to say that with the spring/foam combo there is no heat issues and no getting busy issues.  Still enough springs to bounce. ;)

Have you tried putting a piece of plywood between the boxspring and mattress? That made a huge difference on our old bed! It was 10 years old and had a big dip in the middle. The plywood didn't totally solve it, but it made it better until we could get a new bed.

Just wanted to add my two cents. I LOVE my tempurpedic! I've had one for roughly 6 years and as a stomach sleeper it is the only way to go. Whenever I travel I have neck pain b/c I miss my mattress.

I also wanted to share my amazing customer service experience. When I moved, I guess the movers folded the mattress in a way that they weren't supposed to. When it got to my new bedroom, it had a huge ridge popping up. It was terrible. I took pictures and contacted customer service. A few weeks later they delivered a brand new mattress - for FREE. I loved them before but then I was really sold.

Oh, and getting busy has never been a problem. At all. ;)
