So I need your opinion on something. We are having our wedding next October at my family farm in Illinois. My FI and I really like the look of string lights over the reception area and no tent. Something like this….
My mom however is insisting that we need a “shelter” type area with the tent. Granted we could put the lights inside the tent but I’m not a fan of that or tents in general. Also, its an extra $900 and I’m having a hard time swallowing that price considering we are trying to keep everything in a $4-$5k budget…preferably closer to $4k. So what do you ladies think? Tent or no tent?

I gotta go with tent… because what if it’s raining? Also, in October it might be cold after the sun sets, especially for women who will likely be wearing party dresses.

I’m also trying to avoid a tent (looking at two sheltered venues but concerned about it being crowded after dinner to mingle). I would rather just string lights, but I think in October it might be too chilly. It’s a big cost to swallow but I’d prefer my guests not leave early due to weather.

I love the look without the tent, but I agree with the ladies above. What about rain?!

Your guests are eating outdoors at night in October? What’s the average temperature and rainfall? I think I’d prioritize heaters/heat lamps etc. rather than a tent, if a choice had to be made.

I voted no tent because that set up is beautiful BUT you have to have a backup plan and that would be a tent for sure. I’ve seen the lights inside of the tent and it can be very pretty as well.

SkinnyLatte17: I voted to get a tent because the weather is so unpredictable here in IL! You never know what might happen, IMO it is best to be safe than sorry 🙂

I’d get a tent. If it rains you are going to be shit out of luck. You can definitely dress up a tent awesomely (I’ve seen trees and beautiful chandeliers). You could also put a dance floor and lounge are outside the tent and have all the sting lights and such.

i voted with tent.
anticipated if rain outhere… 🙂

You need a rain plan or you could end up wasting wayyyy more than 900$
Get the tent. Im renting one for my garden wedding and stringing lights up in it. And if it makes you feel better 900$ is an insanely good deal on one!

My reception will be un-tented and for all the people concerned about the back-up plan for rain … we paid a refundable deposit on a tent from the rental company to reserve it just in case of bad weather. I would ask what the rental company’s policies are or shop around to find one that will work with you.

Thanks ladies! I appreciate all your input. And Illinois does have some pretty moody weather lol! I’ve been thinking about it and I guess if we were doing it during the summer it may be more feasable to go without the tent. It may just be a bit too chilly without it. Thanks so much girls!

Looks beautiful without the tent but your guests could be pretty miserable if it’s rainy/cold. Maybe a black tent so the lights show up and open sided (but with heaters) so you still get some of the feeling of being outside?

I did an outdoor wedding and wanted to forgo the tent, but was really glad I got it when it was pouring rain at our rehearsal and forecasted for rain on wedding day! Also, it’s hard to get properly spaced anchors and electrical sources for the picture you showed. So I vote tent!
