You’re not going to like this answer but I would definitely go with the bigger tent for your peace of mind. I was on the fence about what size tent and opted to go with the larger just to ensure everyone had rain and/or direct sun protection. Sooooo glad I did! It poured rain the day before but I didn’t stress because of the tent! It ended up being a perfect weather day but wow was I grateful for the tent’s shade! Also, I was thinking of having open seating but feedback from guests before hand told me that Open seating gives people stress. It seems counterintuitive to me but people prefer to have a seating chart. I dont get it, we’re grown adults capable of socializing but that was strong feedback we got so we went with a seatIng chart.  I do think it’s nice for everyone to have a place to sit while eating. Best wishes!

We had 100 people (10 tables) with a dessert table, dance floor (6 panels) and a small bar in the 40×80 tent… it was comfortable, but I think we could have still used more space.

Here’s a not so great picture, but at least it will show you the spacing between the tables.  Guy in a white shirt in the background is standing on our dancefloor (where we also did speeches) and our dessert table is directly beside it.

@southernbeelle:  We had ten 72″ tables but we also had the dance floor, dessert bar and alcohol bar under the tent along the edges.

@southernbeelle:

I would really consider the larger tent. If rain happens to grace you with its presence on that day, all those extra tables by the pool will not be usable and the extra space will always come in handy. It may cost a little more, but less stress about it raining etc. may actually be worth it.

I would go with the larger tent.  We are having about 80 people, and still having a 40×80 tent.

@southernbeelle:  I wanted to go with the smaller tent too but have bitten the bullet and got the larger so I can have a dancefloor. The estimates on google etc for how many people fit is like battery hens! Im edging my dancefloor once the tables and buffet are in to ensure there are no vast sapaces of emptiness. Im also haveing food stations and no planned seating. People can flippin well talk ot one another!!Best of Luck. I did a scaled model with paper to suss it out, once tables are in, and chairs and spaces for people to walk the space gets eaten up pretty fast!
