When I type in an apostrophe that looks like this... I find that everything after it is wrapped in a CODE tag and is formatted strangely... until I type in another backticked apostrophe like this Then everything is formatted normally again.

Another test: Normal text Code text Normal text again.

    Testing testing, 1-2-3!

ps Has anyone noticed these strange formatting issues before?  Or is it a new phenomenon...

Sometimes I've seen apostrophes show up as the weird letters...it's been that way for at least a few months.

I've seen the   show up before but not the different font following it.

&nbsp; <---That shows up. I can't really remember a specific example, but if I can remember correctly, I think it happens more often when there is an image being posted.

Ya, that's the first time I've seen the different font. And I guess it's a semi-colon, not an apostrophe. :)

It might be because they paste it from word. If I copy and paste something into my website from word, it will sometimes show up that way. If it is copied and pasted into notepad first, it does not happen because the formatting is taken out. It still leaves all the correct punctuation, but I have to reset the paragraphs.

Sorry, that could be a copy and paste issue too. I know it has to do with the formatting.

The bug I've been able to reproduce is that any time a "backtick" character is used, the software is generating a CODE tag.

Backticks are made by typing the top left key on the keyboard (to the left of the number 1).  Backtciks also look like a grave accent, and people used to use them in typewriters to add accents to non-English languages (e.g. à, è, ì, ò, ù):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_accent

Typing a backtick causes subsequent characters to appear in Courier font, until another "backtick" character is used.  Then a </CODE> tag is added, and the font goes back to normal.

There may be a connection to copy and paste: I'm not sure actually how backticks are ending up in comments.  Most people don't use the backtick in every day typing, I think?  So maybe some program is creating backticks, and when the text is pasted in... it becomes a backtick?

I dunno, I'm kinda stumped!  I think this just suddenly started happening, and I'm not sure why.

Can anyone figure out how backticks are ending up in board posts?

My son said it is probably because the end user is using a font that hasn't been installed on the blogs. At least that is how I understood it. He is in the middle of some tech stuff right now, so he really isn't able to help much more than that.

I think there's def. a connection with the copy/past thing. When I post a longer response, or want to create a thread, I usually start it in Word so that I can catch spelling, grammer or typo errors. Sometimes the font comes out much smaller.

I think it could be a server issue too though?? I use Firefox at work, so when I'm on the boards during the day - everything's fine. If I use Explorer or Safari at home though often my font shows up a lot smaller.

When that happens I try to edit it by hitting the HTML button to remove the font settings.

Yah, copy and pasting is definitely fraught with issues. :-(

This bug is separate though.  I can recreate it just by using the backticks key.  I'll type a line that looks just like this: ' test html '

Except instead of using an apostrophe ('), I'll use a backtick.

    test html

I didn't copy and paste anything, but the "test html" code is wrapped in a <CODE> </CODE> tag which makes it render as a monospaced font.

What I can't figure out is if this bug was always there, or it's just recently started showing up, hmm....

@Mr Bee: It's always been there. It's a "feature" of bbpress.

@ejoyb - I'm impressed by your knowledge of the platform!

I was under the impression that feature was disabled on this install though... so was wondering if it had been un-disabled, or if it's been active all along.

Heh. I have no knowledge of bbpress (I'm a vbulletin chick myself) but I do have plenty of knowledge about searching the web. :)

Oh sorry, I should've explained earlier that it was a bbPress thing... I usually leave the technical details out. :-)

Didn't mean to send you out to Google - mostly just curious if anyone's noticed backtick issues in the past, or if it's a recent phenomenon!
