    Hi all,

As many of you know my FH and I will be moving to Texas at the EXACT same time as the wedding...we plan to find an apt for the first 6 months so we can house hunt while we are there and sign a lease to begin June 1st and come BACK to MI until the wedding (June 26) and then go back to start our lives in Austin TEXAS!

    Here is the thing...

with us moving and getting married all within a month, we arn't going to have time to go on our honeymoon right away :( We have a fund put aside so hopefully for our 1 year annversary we can go. However, I want to go on a mini moon for a long weekened or something but since it would be too stressful to go far...what suggestions do you ladies have for Austin/surrounding areas?

We don't want to spend more then $700 or so since it would just be for a weekend but we want some sort of special, pretty, romantic "mini 'moon" :)

    help?!??!!

    thanks :)

Why don't you consider Galveston, TX

Tourism has been slow picking up after the hurricane so prices are really good.

I have stayed at the Galvez which has an amazing pool area and is across from the beach. The downtown area of galveston is has lots of antique shops and boutiques. And in June there is no threat of hurricanes.

Or you could try a weekend in New Orleans and stay in the french quarter if you are willing to drive a little ways!

So many options!  I don't have anything specific in mind right now, but maybe somewhere on Lake Travis or even San Antonio.  Actually, I've heard that the Hilton Hill Country Resort is supposed to be really nice.  I'll try brainstorming for you :)

If you do a google search for honeymoon packages, there are a lot of options that come up.

Here is the link to the google page:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=texas+honeymoon+packages&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

And here is the link to just one of the options:

My FI and I live in Austin, and we went to San Antonio last year for a weekend to stay at a really cute bed and breakfast, see the Riverwalk and the Alamo, eat yummy Mexican food, etc.  It was very affordable and a fun getaway.

You could also check out the Hill Country wineries and do a wine tasting tour.  Fredricksburg is a really cute little town, and it has bed and breakfast options as well.

FreemyerBride    September 18, 2010   Austin, getting married at South Padre Island

You can go down to South Padre, which is about a 6 hr drive from Austin. South Padre is known for Spring Break crazy, but any time of year other than March, it's a great, sleepy island.

You can go to Fredricksburg, a lot closer. They have cute B&Bs, a local brewery, a WWII museum, and lots of wineries.

Try VRBO.com for a listing of places in Texas that have vacation rentals that are nicer than your run-of-the-mill hotels and b&bs.

    Hope this helps!

I would suggest Fredericksburg. It's an adorable little town, with a huge German influence. It's not too far from Enchanted Rock, which is always fun to hike and camp at!

San Antonio is a lot of fun too. Make sure you go to El Mercado and the Riverwalk. Lots of fun stuff in SA!

Yep I was going to suggest Gruene and Fredericksburg.

We have a river house in Gruene and we love going into town to eat at the Gristmill which is next to gruene Hall. You can always catch live music at Gruene Hall.  Then you can float the river depending on the weather.  There is also Schlitaurbaun (sorry spelling) there too which is a water park.  The town of Gruene has some cute little shops and a great Mexican food place that also has live music.

Fredericksburg is where we are getting married at and it is a neat town. They have several vineyards that offer tours and tastings and live music on weekends.  The bed and breakfast places are awesome some offer great views and hot tubs.  The town also has lots of shopping.  The enchanted rock is nearby so you can go for a really neat hike or camp there.

If it is warm enough I say New Braunfels to float the river or Port Aransas to go to the beach, which is about 3 or so hours from Austin. You can rent a beach house and chill out on the beach. La Cantera in San Antonio, is also a favorite weekend getaway for my fiance and I. Let us know what you decide!

There are some great vinyards in Fredricksburg! Also, staying in San ANtonio and doing the riverwalk would be GREAT!

haha come to Fredericksburg!  I live here and it's a great little tourist town... Tons of romantic bed and breakfasts (tub for two anyone??)... I recommend the absolute charm bed and breakfasts, or something out in the country... There are alot of great places to visit, hike and drink... Main street has tons of nice little shops, there is a great hiking area called Enchanted Rock, Lady Bird Golf Course, dozens of wineries, the Pacific War Museum, Trade Days in out toward Stonewall you can google to find dates of that... There are always festivals or fun things to do at Market Platz check out the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce for that... Also there are always good bands playing at Auslander and the newly remodeled Buc's Bar and Grill (my boyfriend's bar!) Hondo's and the new restaurant Cross Roads.  Not to mention the FAMOUS Luckebach Texas is just a few miles outside of town (and they have free dances on fridays!)  There's also a great little place 12 miles out of town called Tin Star Ranch, beautiful little place in the country with quite a few nice "bunk houses", they occationally have bands too.  Sorry thats alot of information!

And the best part is, it's only an hour away from Austin!  You can come here anytime to "rekindle" your mini-moon.

Fredericksburg is a great little place (especially when your only visiting! lol)

I loooove San Antonio! There are some seriously gorgeous hotels, the ridiculously amazing riverwalk (with some of the best mexican food you've ever had in your life!), tons of museums (the alamo, historical museums, and my personal favorite, the Ripley's Believe it or Not museum!), a zoo, and two amusement parts (six flags and sea world) so all of your bases are covered! It's definitely one of those towns that no matter what you like to do you'll be able to find a ton of fun stuff to do!

I second Fredericksburg or Gruene. Both are quaint but still have tons of stuff to do. Galveston is still not to far so if you want to head to the beach try south padre or port aransas.

You are brave getting married and moving in the same month! We are going to move about 2 monts after we get married and that stresses me out. Good luck!

We're date twins AND moving twins!  FI and I are moving to (90% sure) Houston sometime between May 15 and July 31, with the wedding on June 26.  We were actually in San Marcos and San Antonio this weekend, and I'd second the San Antonio votes.  So many great hotels, restaurants, and spas for relaxing on a weekend.  And it's so easy to get to from Austin.

I'd definitely suggest Gruene or Fredricksburg.  I love both.  They each have several very cute B&Bs and cute little stores and such.  Wimberley is another similar town.  If you want more outdoorsy stuff, I'd suggest the areas around Garner State Park near Concan.  IMHO the Frio River is much nicer than the Guadalupe for toobin'.  It's much cleaner and less crowded - doesn't have the college frat party feel that the Guadalupe can have.

Galveston is OK.  If you are looking for somewhere nice to stay, I would suggest Moody Gardens, but it can be a little too child friendly for my taste.  The Hotel Galvez is nice as well, but the beach can be dissappointing depending on your vantage point.  I always loved it, but most of my friend's that moved here (from beachy places like FL or Colombia) don't like it at all.  The farther south you go, the better the beaches are.

San Antonio is a lot of fun as well.  Stay near the River Walk and you can walk to most attractions.

You could stay in Austin and stay as a really nice hotel like the Driskill or the Mansion at Judge's Hill and splurge on the things that you usually won't do in real life.  Spa treatments, dinner at Green Pastures...

You might also check out Southwest Airlines to see what specials they have out of Austin too.  You might find something good.  We've gotten Houston-New Orleans flights for as little as $10 + taxes and fees each way.

Good luck and welcome to Texas!

Ooh - also the Messina Hof Winery in Bryan is really nice.  I've never been, but everyone I know who went there liked it a lot.  Plus it's close to the Bluebell Creamery and who doesn't love free ice-cream?

if you want to look a bit further, i'd recommend santa fe. we took our honeymoon there in january, and we didn't have much $ or time to spend. southwest had a good deal on flights to albuquerque, and then we drove the hour to santa fe.

in june, pretty much everywhere is going to be hot and humid. at least in new mexico you'd be high up in the mountains and have less humidity.

if you'd rather be in driving distance, then definitely look into gruene or another cute hill country town.

    good luck!

go to Fredericksburg! My husband and I love this town! We've stayed here and were happy with the free breakfast and comfy bed.

    Eat here or here.

Go to this winery and this winery.

It's a short 45 minute drive from Austin and totally affordable!

if you come down the weekend after your wedding (fourth of july weekend) there will be ALOT going on in Fredericksburg.  Including some fun horse races!

Parade, fireworks, lots of businesses are going to have celebrations...  :)

And a little insider tip:  Try eating at The Sunset Grill (review on urbanspoon), it's on adams street (off main street), past HEB (on your way to the fair grounds)... It is THE BEST lunch place, they have great sandwiches and burgers (and specials everyday)...  Living here I get really sick of german food, so if you want something different.  AND there is a debate about the best burgers in town, it's a toss up between Charlie's and Alamo Springs, Alamo Springs is a bit of a drive but it takes my vote!  And it is right near the Bat Caves which is really fun and pretty if you go at dusk!

As for romantic/cozy bed and breakfasts (for relatively cheap, ok some of the rooms aren't) I would check out Absolute Charm although most of the mainstream hotels/motels (La Quinta, Best Western, The Hampton Inn... etc) are all newer and nice (La Quinta accepts dogs!!)  But there are probably THOUSANDS of accomodations to choose from in Fredericksburg, check out the Chamber of Commerce Website and get a good idea of whats in the area!

And for the record, Guene is a pretty cool little town!  And tubing is GREAT in that area!  But you could always just go for a day trip... mini road trip honeymoon?? :)

Let us know what you pick!!

You could also just spend your mini moon sight seeing in austin- stay at one of the hotels on town lake- four seasons is nice, though the room was free so I'm not sure on cost... or even the Austin Motel on s. congress (it's trendy and funky).

Go to the museums(blanton,tx history, AMOA), the capitol, see the bats, eat good local food(for mexican try having brunch at cisco's order migas with fajita and put the squeezy butter on your tortilla before you load it up then spend the rest of the day being lazy!!!), kyak on town lake, play at zilker, go to the wild flower center, go swimming in barton springs and lay out and relax with the hubby on the grass, see some live music, go dancing, go shopping on south congress- people watch!

Since you guys are new in town I would say kick start your austin life by spending a few days doing all the must-do's many people live here without doing any of those things and I think that's just crazy! I can tell you that you would have way more fun than going to some other tourist trap- save fredericksburg for when you've exhausted this beautiful city, it's cool- but you'll make more memories here. Same with greune, the food at the gristmill is kinda blah to be honest- it's like a day trip sort of thing, take a day off during the summer and go out there just so you can say you have.

Oh! Great post! You sound the opposit of me - I live in Texas right now but will be relocating to Michigan lol.

San Antonio would be a great consideration for a mini-moon! There is the Riverwalk in downtown which is just naturally really pretty and dreamy (during the day or night!) but also comes complete with tons of delicious Mexican food restaurants, great drinks/bars/pubs if you are interested in a few nights out on the town partying. We have the Tower of the Americas, Alamo, Fiesta Texas, great shopping, Mexican market, several very nice art and science museums, a few really great theatres and a nice symphony and dance company, the Spurs, and besides the overall feel and atmosphere you get in San Antonio is just so fun, charming and friendly. It has so much culture! Lots of atmosphere and fresh local color. You can stay and dine at really fantastic places with local flavor and flare, or at top of the line, upscale restaurants and hotels. It has a little bit of everything so you'll most certainly find several things to keep you busy and happy, no matter what you like. Almost all visitors have very positive things to say their SA experiences.

If you're more of the small German towns, hill county, bed and breakfast, state park, and antique browsing types of get aways there's Boerne, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Blanco, Bandera, Brady (all south central TX within a few hours of the Austin/San An area) and many many more.

I pretty much second everyone else's comments. I was so excited I just skipped right over reading them before lol

I would suggest a day trip to Gruene to take in the Gristmall, dance hall, toobing and more, but a full long weekend in San Antonio. Another bee mentioned more great San Antonio things I forgot: Sea World, the zoo, historic museums, the haunted hotels/ghostwalking tours in downtown, Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum, and the missions.

Because of a project my fiance is working on, we won't be able to take a long honeymoon immediately either, so we are going to drive up to Oklahoma to stay at the new Choctaw casino in Durant. It will only take us about an hour to get there (driving from North Dallas) and we'll just hang out for a long weekend.
