In my opinion, Koh Samui has nicer hotels and resorts, but can be more crowded. You can island hop and take a speed boat to try other resorts, just make sure to travel light. We made the mistake of taking wheelie bags and for some of the boats over to the islands, you have to hike down big long piers with all of your luggage.
I lived in Suratthani for a year (the province with both islands); honestly, Koh Samui is more developed and crowded. Koh Phangan is more backpacker-ish. Koh Tao is also nice.
If you're looking for a homebase Koh Samui would work, but it may be better to just island hop and stay at different places.
Enjoy. I'm jealous my fiance and I can't get the time off for a trip to Asia. We're thinking Columbia and brushing up on our Spanish.
Hi Ladies,
I went to thailand for a month last year and visited all of the above places,
Samui is best for nice hotels its a lovely Island, Phangan is a much more younger island - its famous for its full moon parties and a lot of the accomdation is on the beach budget huts - Koh Tao is very pretty! - i wish we had spent longer on Koh Tao.
We decided to Island Hop - So we started in Samui, then onto Phangan then Koh Tao then moved onto to the remainder of places
We then moved onto Phuket and Koh Phi Phi!
Its such an amazing place! I love thailand - I'm very jealous!

I did this honeymoon!! Koh Phangan was GORGEOUS - we stayed at the Santhiya Resort and Spa, and it was incredible. It did NOT disappoint! We also stayed at Koh Samui at the Sandalwood Villa, and while that was nice, we enjoyed Koh Phangan just a bit more.
Sounds Amazing
- We did it on a bit of budget as it was a holiday rather than honeymoon but I would LOVE to go back!
xx
I spent a bit of time on Koh Phangan this past summer and loved it. It's a much quieter island and is less developed than Koh Samui. My thought is that as fun as island-hopping is, it is a huge pain to wheel around your luggage (particularly on and off the ferries!). There was plenty to do on the island -- snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, etc. We did take one day trip to the nearby national park, Ang Thong, which was great.
If you don't have it in your itinerary, Chiang Mai is a really neat place to vacation, as well. It was my fiance's favorite stop of the trip. Non-beachy, but still relaxing and fun.
What a great honeymoon -- whatever you do, I'm sure you'll love it!
There is also firefly airlines and air asia. Flights in and out of thailand to surrounding places are ridiculously cheap...you could go to kuala lumpur from krabi or get the ferry to koh samui and get the night bus back down to bangkok. Koh Samui is busier but beware...it's not exactly stunning...the centre is grotty and filled with touts/ The beaches are lovely. If picturesque is what you're after, go for a smaller island and an upmarket hotel.
The snorkelling / diving in Ko Tao is fantastic just be careful...I burned my bum!
My vote would be Ko Tao or Ko Samui. I found Ko Phangan to be not as pretty and too focused on partying if you're looking for a relaxing honeymoon. Ko Tao has amazing diving, if I were to go back to Thailand that's where I'd go. Have fun!
We just booked our flights to Thailand for our honeymoon next July and I'm so excited! Where would you suggest staying in Koh Samui? We're looking at the Melati Beach Resort, the Silvadee and the Zazen but I'm not sure which one! I'm also open to new suggestions! Thanks!
We also stayed at the Santhiya in Koh Phangan. I much prefered Koh Phangan to Koh Samui, which was too crowded for my taste. It's very built up and not as romantic as Koh Phangan in my opinion. There were other very nice little resorts on the same beach as Santhiya if you're looking for something a little cheaper.
Does anyone recommend bungalows w/ web links or prices in different areas? Trying to get a feel of what our trip is going to cost for hotel.
We stayed at the Seaflower bungalows on Koh Phangan:

Great experience. It's not luxury (wasn't going that route this trip), but we rented a bungalow with AC and it was perfect. They have free kayak rentals, a gorgeous beach with pretty good snorkeling in the reef, a nice beachfront bar, and excellent food. They also do customized beach bbqs -- you tell them what to buy at the market and they cook it up for you.
Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but I really enjoyed it. Definitely a relaxed environment.

Hey Bees!
We're planning our honeymoon in Thailand and have already booked our first 2 hotels... and we're a bit confused about where to go next!
We'll arrive in Bangkok Oct 25, and spend 3 nights there. Oct 28 we fly off to Krabi, where we'll be staying for 4 nights in a small, "secluded" hotel, in what's going to be the really relaxing part of our trip... we'd like to explore Ko Phi Phi, Krabi and Ao Nang from there.
Here's where we get a bit lost. We're thinking about going to Koh Phangan for 4 nights, being based there and doing day trips to Koh Samui & Koh Tao. However, I'm not sure if maybe Koh Samui is a better place to be based at?
Any input or suggestions (on any part of our trip) will be much appreciated! Thankssss so much!
