I spent a week in Koh Samiu a few years back and it was amazing. There are lots of hotels, I was traveling with two guys friends and "splurged" for my own bungalow w/ac for$25usd/night :). There are tons of places around, we were within walking distance to the beach and rented mopeds to get into the more 'downtown' part of koh samui. There are tons of gorgeous places though. Enjoy!
Honestly, I wouldn't limit myself to the south. Chiang Mai and Ayyuthaya are amazing, and Bangkok is absolutely unique. I'd recommend at least part of it in the north to see what incredible culture there is there! You can always go to a beach!
I am also looking into a Thailand honeymoon.... Our wedding is early November so we may take it then or we may take it later (finances depending). I also am trying to see if we should island hop or maybe pick one and stay there? Honestly I think I would want to island hop but I don't know enough about the area to really know where to go and where to avoid!
I love Thailand and I've gone twice. I second the recommendation to visit Chang Mai. I would pick an island over Krabi or Phuket. Both places are fairly busy and for a honeymoon I would want something more relaxing.
If you're going for two weeks, I would recommend doing Bangkok for 2 - 3 days, then heading north to Chang Mai for 3-4 days before heading to one of the islands. For a honeymoon I would want one of the more secluded islands and do Koh Lipe or another smaller one. Or, you could mix it up and do Phuket or Koh Phi Phi and have the party atmosphere for a few nights and then move on.
No matter where you go, you'll have a fabulous time. Thailand is amazing and has awesome people.
We went to Thailand in 2008, and it was AMAZING! We stayed in Phuket at Indochine Resort (http://www.indochinephuket.com/). It was a luxurious place with amazing views! We enjoyed shopping in Phuket, eating dinner at Joe's Downstairs (must-do if you're in Phuket- fabulous views, delicious food, very romantic), and seeing Phuket Fantasea (a cultural show). My favorite activity was our boat trip to the Phi Phi Islands. Definitely one of the most beautiful places that I've ever seen!
I'm going on honeymoon to Thailand too! I've been advised by trave agents that Koh Samui is probably closest to what fiance and I would love. Our criteria was relaxing, beach and exploring/culture. I'm currently looking at which resort to stay at; between Silavadee or Melati :)
@LaraW: There is a groupon going on right now for a resort in KOh Samui. You should check it out!
We are going to Hong Kong, Macau and Phuket in December/January and just started booking. We are going over New Years, so you may be going after us, but things are already booking up!! We were really shocked and already had to change the order of our trip because of sold out planes. So I would at least try to get some things booked if you can. Also, the Chinese new year is in January, and I guess Thailand is a popular beach destination from Hong Kong and China.
Ive never been though, so I dont have any suggestions! I cant wait!
@patco: I went to Hong Kong and Macau this past new year. You will have an amazing time. Let me know if you need any suggestions for must sees, especially things off the beaten path. I LOVED both places!
I just want to say I MISS Thailand ;) I was there for 6 weeks around the time of the tsunami and again for 2 weeks in 2009. Seriously.. I'd go a 3rd time!
Enjoy!
I'm also planning a honeymoon for January 2013 to thailand! Awesome!

My fiance and I are planning on a 2 week-ish long Thailand honeymoon in January 2013. I am looking at resorts and locations to stay, and I am getting overwhelmed! We want to have relaxing, lay on the beach days, and we love snorkeling. We also want to explore. I really want to stay in the South where all the beautiful beaches are. I would like to be somewhat seculded, but close enough to be able to take a taxi to other places. We want a resort on the beach, and reasonably priced. Any recommendations or suggestions? Help!
