we sort of did a combo… we used a paper photo frame w/ a photo slipped inside, and put it in an envelope with a small folded thank you note.  The photo frames were 5×7 and fit a 4×6 photo, and I had to order a 5.5×7.5 envelope to put them in.  The paper frame, photo, and folded card only required standard postage.  They really turned out great.
ETA: we actually used a large group picture of all of our guests gathered in front of the ranch where we wed, it was a great shot.

I think either idea 1 or idea 3. To be honest, if someone whose wedding I went to sent me a framed photo of themselves I would remove the photo of the bride and groom and use the frame for myself. I dont even know if I would display the photo afterwards. If I got a postcard thank you, I would pop it on the fridge.

I also like Simlpifiedbride’s idea. I think you’re going down the right path though, good thoughts!

I could see doing the framed photo for family but definitely not for general guests.  Even with your example (letter and framed photo) – that just isn’t something I would expect too many people to display in their home.  I think the postcard with a photo on one side is sufficient – but even after awhile, those will more than likley get thrown away (with the exception of family…but you will probably provide them with the option to buy photos or give them as gifts).
