If you feel you have to you could send a less formal thank you for attending like a postcard thank you thing or even an email.

hi bees:
two questions regarding thank you cards for wedding gifts:
1. if the person is not attending the wedding but has already sent a gift, i assume i send the thank you card immediately, correct?
2. if the person IS attending the wedding but has already sent the gift, when do I send the thank you? immediately? if so, do i send a second thank you after the wedding to thank them for attending? or can i just send one thank-you after the wedding for both the gift and their presence (even though at this point the gift will have been received like 2 months previous)?
