With our wedding a month-ish away we have started receiving some “no’s” (sad but expected).. what they’ve done is sent checks (fun AND unexpected) with their RSVP cards! Granted I would have gotten a card and sent the check in that but that’s neither here nor there and grad students don’t turn down money!
But that leads me to my question – how do I thank the folks (right now it’s three guests so far) for the money.. I can’t say “thanks for the lovely card” and then weave into it at the end about the money.. I don’t want to say “thanks for the dollah bill y’all” (kidding..). Any ideas of how to address a check without being completely tasteless?

“Thank you for your generous gift. We are sorry that you were unable to make us for our special day!”

whenever i’ve given money, my thank you card always said something to the effect of… “thank you for your generous gift” 🙂
i think that works well… without sounding tacky or overly excited about money.
and also add in verbiage that you’re sad that they won’t be able to make it!

Dear so and so,
We are sad that you were not able to make it to our special day, we wish you could have been there. Thank you so much for thinking about us and your generous gift. (Maybe tell them what you plan on doing with the cash they gave you. My grandmother always wanted to know that.) We hope to see you soon.

I agree with Ms. Caniche – some people sent us checks when we were first engaged (which was weird to me, but whatever). I just wrote something along the lines of “thank you for your generous gift, we’re sure to use it toward (flowers, a new sofa, our honeymoon, etc). Can’t wait to see you all soon.” blah blah blah – you get the idea. Just to acknowledge that we appreciate their gift but let them know we weren’t going to spend the money on groceries or whatever.

Thank you for your generous gift
or Thank you for your monetary gift
We will use it toward _________
We hope to see you soon.

I wrote my $$ thank you cards pretty much exactly like Ms. Caniche wrote out for you and I did include what we planned on using the money on — e.g. putting it towards our new house, using to complete our set of pots & pans, etc. I actually had a script/template written out for a variety of gifts so when I sat down to write them, I basically wrote the same thing over and over so it would go faster (of course I did personalize each a bit to make it a bit more special).

I think all of the other posts have good suggestions “Thank you for your generous gift, we plan to use it to _________”. The only other thing Miss Manners points out, is to not make any reference to the amount of money you received, just a generous thank you!
