We got a few gifts before the wedding and we sent thank you’s right away.

I think if the gifts came outside of the wedding or a shower, you can wait until after the wedding before sending a thank you, but my advice would to be send out thank yous as you receive gifts, just to keep up with your thank you notes and to keep them from piling up.

Send them out after you receive them, which will help when you have a big pile to write, right after the wedding. My mom had a gift shipped directly to the bride and groom, right after receiving the invitation. She didn’t get a thank you for 4 months – until weeks after the wedding. Even though her e-mail address was included, the couple never acknowledged they had gotten the gift, after it arrived, and she was concerned.
