This is probably a silly question–we met with two photographers, and after alot of thought (they were both great), finally decided on one. What do I say to the one I didn’t pick? Do I need to give her a reason that we didn’t choose her? Or do I just say that we enjoyed meeting with her, but have gone in another direction?

I would just say you are going in another direction. You dont need to tell her anything else.

I wrote short and sweet e-mails to the effect of…”Thank you for taking the time to meet with us about photography for our wedding. We enjoyed talking to you and seeing your work; however we have decided to go another way. Thanks again for everything, and all the best to you.”
I always felt guilty, but it’s part of doing business. I say just keep it polite and professional.

I didn’t plan on saying anything to any of the vendors we didn’t choose. :s
But then one of the photographers we didn’t choose that I really liked emailed me asking what we had decided so I emailed her “Hi so and so, Fiance and I talked about this, and it was really hard for us to come to this decision but we have decided to go with another photographer for our wedding photos. We really enjoyed meeting you and appreciate your time spent meeting with us. We wish you the best!”

I did similar to Gemstone. I just wrote off a brief email thanking them for their time, but that we had decided to go with another photographer.
