Last year for Thanksgiving, my family came and stayed in our apartment, and we cooked the meal. I'm from Tennessee, so that's a six hour drive for me to see my family. It was really nice, and I was hoping to go home this year to see them. Fi wants to stay in town because we saw my family last year... I just haven't been home on an actual holiday in three years. :P He wants to go home the weekend after (think Friday morning) and stay for a couple days. That's fine, I guess, but I want to eat and celebrate with my family. Guess I'll have to suck it up and just go shopping with them instead. ;)
What are you and your FI doing?
I think Mr. D and I are going to have a Harry Potter marathon and eat Chinese. Our families do large get togethers in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This way the different couples are forced to pick and choose what family to be with. That weekend we are heading to Chicago to visit the kiddos I used to nanny for!
We're taking a mini-vacation down to LA (although I'm not looking forward to the 12 hr drive!) & getting some new tatts & going dress shopping! We've only been back home (GA) for the holidays once in the 4 years we've lived in CA & it was a logistical nightmare. I miss my family around this time of year but they're both so large & spread out that I'm kinda thankful I have an easy out (can't afford plane tickets!)
We are going to be stuck where we live without any family, because DH is on call. Luckily, my mom gave me all her good recipes. I'm gonna pray he doesn't get called out. Hopefully, we will eat, watch movies, and maybe put up Christmas decor.
My FI and I usually have Thanksgiving by ourselves since we spend each Holiday with family members, so we've deemed Thanksgiving as our Holiday.
Last year was a horrific mess, my FI's mom died right before Thanksgiving and one of FI's adopted brothers gave us HELL for the entire month he was there which included Thanksgiving day. I was almost in tears.
This year I'd like to "go back to normal" and have Thanksgiving at home with my FI, but my mom is battling her second round of breast cancer and I am thinking that I'd like to spend Thanksgiving with her and cooking her a delicious Thanksgiving meal! We'll be making Thanksgiving plans this weekend and hopefully it goes smoothly this year.
Good luck with your Thanksgiving plans!
Holidays are so tough when your families aren't in the same spot! My parents and my husband's parents are both here in town, so we're really lucky, but even doing double Thanksgivings tends to wear us out. I can't imagine adding travel in, too!
We split the holidays, Thanksgiving with his and Christmas with mine. For Thanksgiving, we go down to his sisters and have dinner. It is about an hour and a half to get there. We stay up all night play Texas Hold'em tournament style. It is usually a long ride home the next day.
I've recently moved to Florida with my Fiance (/legal hubby) and I'll be alone on thanksgiving since he will be working :( (no holidays off in the uscg) oh well.. We are celebrating on another day instead!
I hope KFC or Boston Market will be open :-p
Going to the FILs - I LOVE when other people cook!
Black Friday is when we celebrate Kitty Thanksgiving. I make a turkey just for the cats. Because I boycott stores on Black Friday as it is National Buy-Nothing Day.
We're running in a 5 mile race, then having dinner with my family (his will be out of town).
Friday morning I always make a big brunch for just the two of us and this year we'll be choosing the city we'll be moving to once we're married.
I'm pretty excited
We will have dinner with my family. FI's family lives 5 hours away by airplane, so I think the plan for future holidays is Thanksgiving with mine and Christmas with his.
Although this is our third thanksgiving as a couple, we've never spent one together. The first one, he was working and for the second one, I lived in Europe. Unfortunately, it seems like this year will be no different! He's a lineman working up in New York after Sandy, and he says they could be gone for 2-3 more weeks! Thankfully I have my family!
We don't celebrate it as we're not American (Im english, fi is mexican and we live in mexico)
So it seems pointless that im commenting except I'm dying to go to a real thanksgiving one day. Except i don't know anyone from the US =( I was thinking of that film where the guy paid a family to spend christmas with them, id so love to do that for thanksgiving
Im also dying to go to an American prom. but alas im about ten years too late for that
DH and I are doing Thanksgiving day with my family then going to see his family later that night. They do Trivial Pursuit so we'll go there to kick some butt! We'll then wake up bright and early for some Black Friday shopping!
going out to dinner locally and the day after Thanksgiving, we'll head over to Pittsburgh to visit his family
We're going to Georgia to visit some of his family and then stopping at my brother's house in South Carolina on our way home.
I'm going up to Indiana to do Thanksgiving with my side of the family. We will have one meal/celebration with my dad's side and another with my mom's side of the extanded family (all the aunts, uncles, cousins, etc).
As we'll be doing X-mas with DH's side of the family, we'll also be doing our X-mas celebration with my side of the family at Thanksgiving.
We are going to my parents' house and bringing his parents and at least one aunt along. It will be our first Thanksgiving together with both families.
We're doing Thanksgiving with DH's dad's side of the family a couple hours away. It's really exciting because that side of the family is HUGE, and everyone is a great cook. His uncle is a farmer and is raising the turkeys himself. He'll slaughter them just before, and the plan is to have three: one smoked, one fried, and one... um... can't remember, but I'm sure it will be delicious!
We'll be going to Austin to spend Thanksgiving with his family and then going to see Mizzou play Texas A&M in College Station.
I've never been to Austin so I'm excited but also a little sad I won't be with my family. :(
Thanksgiving was never a holiday I cared for. I've gone out to eat many a time for it! FI and I go to FI's family's house, since I don't have family in KC. I'll make my usual Tofurkey log. I usually make green bean casserole, but I'm trying to eat healthy, so I may come up with a healthy alternative side dish. FI's family makes a lot of rich, creamy, heavy stuff, and I always feel sick after, hah! I will likely NOT be shopping this year due to the wedding. Plus, I worked at the mall, and it is mayhem! I may just run into LUSH and see what's on sale.
We'll go to his family's house around lunchtime and then go to my family's for dinner. Then some Black Friday shopping, which has now turned into Thanksgiving evening shopping :(
We're just spending it by ourselves for the third year in a row. My parents are actually visiting me now (I live in FL. They live in MA.), and I think my mom is planning on doing an early Thanksgiving at my house next week. My SO's family lives in Alabama (about 6 hours from me), but my SO is in law school and has finals the week after Thanksgiving, so he doesn't want to spend time driving there and back.
It's DH's turn for us to be with his family for Thanksgiving. His sister loves cooking so usually she's the one who hosts it. But so far no one's mentioned anything for this year...I find it kind of bizarre, they start planning for Halloween like a month in advance but are totally last minute for Thanksgiving, in my family it's totally the opposite. I keep bugging him to talk to his mom or sister about it, but I'm sure we'll end up over there.
We'll stop by his parents house in the early afternoon, my parents will be in Fla this year visitng my Grandma for her 80th birthday.. we don't really do anything with our other family members. So it'll be just me, him and our wiener dog shoving turkey in our faces. It's also my birthday.. so I'm sure we'll celebrate that with some delicous adult beverages!
We spend everything Thanksgiving with his family. His family is awesome and I love being with them. But, I have to be at work at 7:45 Thursday night for Black Friday.
FI's parents, sister, her boyfriend, and his parents are all coming to us! And our Puppy will have his first thanksgiving dinner (the past 2 years he just had leftovers). Hopefully us cooking turns out well!
I am excited to see his family (they live in FL) because we haven't had Thanksgiving with them in a while. But I also will miss mine, we usually have about 25 people and its so much fun! But next year (our 1st as a married couple) FI already promised we could go to NJ to see them :)
We are going to my parents for lunch, and his parents for dinner. My family always does lunch for holidays - we never have to pick and choose that way!
We are going to my mom's house to celebrate with my mom, stepdad, and his family from out of town, plus maybe some of my mom's friends who don't have Thanksgiving plans. DH's family all live out of state so we won't be seeing them. Then I have to work Black Friday (it's not a federal holiday and I'm going on vacation the week after Thxgiving), so hopefully there will be lots of good sales on Thursday night!
We are driving 20 hours to visit my sisters. One of them has not met FI and their politics are oil & water (as are his and mine but I love him, she doesn't even know him). We also have the kids (his 4 & 9 year olds). He has full custody and I've been "mom" to them for about a year now but we've not done a car trip longer than a couple hours yet.
I think I'm crazy!
Holiday's are always tough for us. Both families live close and splitting never seems to work. We will be at his family's on Thanksgiving nad then figure out how to do both on Christmas. I never thought I would hate the holidays, but right now I really do
we are going to my grandparents during the day (mom's parents), then we are all heading to my aunt and uncles and the rest of my dad's whole family (including his mom too). fiance and i both have to work friday, so then saturday we are having thanksgiving dinner at the future in-laws. whew!
Having our first Thanksgiving with all our family. We now live near his family (parents, sister and her family), mine is flying in from NY the Tuesday before.
I'm nervous and wish we could have Thanksgiving of 2010- fancy dinner and late night harry potter. It was just us two and perfect. Oh well :)
We're going to my parents' house. This will be the first time that my FI has EVER been to my childhood home. I'm super excited, since my dad (who has been against us being together) is the one who invited him. He's finally making an effort to get to know my FI! :D
SO has to work black friday which means we can't go home for Thanksgiving. So on Thanksgiving we'll be celebrating my birthday (my birthday is Thanksgiving this year). I've heard rumors of a movie and flowers. Then we'll be flying home friday night and we'll have actual Thanksgiving dinner with my parents and grandma on Sunday.
