    Atkins!

I started atkins diet last week with a friend of mine who said she wanted to try eating low carb...and I am so ecstatic! As far as I can see I have lost a pound, but on the plus side I don't feel guilty every time I eat every little thing, and that is a huge step for me. This wedding dress nonsense drives me crazy, because on the one hand I don't want to have to lose weight just for ONE DAY, but on the other I want nice bulge-less photos, and to start a LONG life with my husband healthy.

Good Luck! Let us know how it goes. I've never really heard any success stories on the Adkins Diet.

I did atkins many years ago and lost lots of weight fast....about 25lbs in 8 weeks.  (I was running daily also).   It was nice to slim down, but it was so unhealthy!  I hope you find a better way to handle that diet than I did.   By the end of 8 weeks, I was weak, starving, cranky.  So then one day I ate a piece of bread and gained 35lbs.  :)

I guess I can't talk to you into resisting fad diets and going for smaller portions, healthier foods and regular exercise?!  ;)  Goodluck no matter what you do!

I'm interested to see how it works for you. I do know a few people who have used it to lose weight rapidly. It does work from what I understand, but personally I'm not a fan. My mom was on it for about a year & got very sick - her Dr's blamed her nutrition.  I'm not really an Atkins fan - I like South Beach better since it allows you to add some healthy carbs back into your diet after only 2 weeks restriction. Good luck! :)

@Dancy905 Atkins is very similar to south beach in that you are supposed to add in healthy carbs each week (add 5g a week in a certain order, i think it goes greens, nuts, berries, whole wheats). I did a low carb diet 5 yrs ago and lost 65 lbs, then started dating my fiance, who is a carb-a-holic, college, birth contol (depo provera), grad school, etc and gained it all back :(

I remember how incredibly healthy I felt last time, and am looking forward to trying to make it stick this time. I am eating 20 g of carbs a day in dark greens (spinach, romaine, brocolli).

Since the last time I did a low carb diet, my mother got diabetes and went into a coma, and is now morbidly obese, has high cholesterol, and has heart problems (among other things), so I know this will help me not to follow in her footsteps.

Oh, and if it can help me look bangin' in my dress, WOOHOO ;) I'll keep you all posted! Thanks for the support!

@ loveandacademia - that's great to hear! My mom did it a long time ago so it's good to hear they've updated the diet. Last time I read it - basically you could eat as many bacon cheeseburgers you wanted as long as you didn't touch the bun! LOL

Just be careful if you're also working out while doing this diet.  You need carbs for fuel to workout, so if you don't have the carbs to burn, you will feel extra tired.

@StephInPa i have been doing a bit of reading up about exercise, and you are right i am going to have to make sure I hit my carb goal for the day when i exercise, to make sure that while i am working my heart rate up to a fat-burning rate i am not actually feeding off my muscles!

according to atkins it is very important to exercise to make sure you eat up to your carb limit each day with mostly healthy greens...i read that after exercise a low carb protein shake is also recommended...lets hope i exercise so intensely as to require any of this haha

the only other recommendation I have for you is to be very carful with all the extra protein intake. Lots of Protein in your diet is good but too much can really hurt your kidneys. Watch for kidney stones and such. This is very well known for diabetics who cannot have a lot of carbs/sugars. Protien slows the process of carbs/sugars into your system. Just watch for pains in the kidneys.

Good luck! My Mom's ex boyfriend, now one of her best friends, does Atkins and he loves it! His only downfall is sodas, and I think everyone has at least one downfall. Unfortunately, mine is bread. Lol.
