@soontobeford:  Chiming in with this because I had an eerily similar experience with The Barn as well.  I am sad to have to give this venue a negative review because I think it’s a great venue, particularly for DIY brides and cost cutters.

If anyone else has used The Barn, or is planning to, please feel free to get in touch!

We generally had good communication with Phil (the owner) up to the wedding.  Sometimes took a little longer on response time, but I let this slide because it is quite a rustic venue and I figured that was the tradeoff for not having the wedding at a banquet hall or hotel. We had some issues – One time he said he would set up the tables for us, but then he denied it and said we had to do it but he’d be there to help and give ideas for setup.  We didn’t see him once while we were setting up.  We had a lot of questions on the day of and day before and he was completely unreachable until right before the ceremony, so we had to wing it. Luckily, we had very helpful family, caterers, and musicians!

Similarly, we hired two of his bartenders at $100 a piece and on the day of, one couldn’t make it and the owner was the other one.  This was frustrating because we asked if he could hire someone to help open beer & pour wine outside so people didn’t all have to go inside during the cocktail hour.  At the last minute, he ended up just laying drinks out for self serve outside and bartending himself inside.

He was also unclear about policies like access to the barn and locking up.  He was bartending but then didn’t tell us when he left.  At the end, we were pouring our own drinks and when we were ready to go, I was running around in my wedding dress half tipsy and high on adrenaline making myself crazy checking that the place was reasonably clean and everything was locked up.

Andddd…here’s the kicker, again.  Man, he does NOT like giving money back!  My wedding was in September and he has been completely silent about giving us a deposit back.  I’m curious if I’ll eventually get that “damaged planter” email, because I’m pretty sure soontobeford was not the first person to hear that excuse.  I also asked for an additional $100 back for the bartender who was unable to make it, but he hasn’t even acknowleded that.

Future brides, please take this seriously!  It is such a sad day when someone like this decides to take advantage of brides like this!  Weddings are frustrating sure, but this is morally wrong!

Past brides, please comment on your own experiences at the barn.  We cannot let him get away with this and continue to treat other brides this way.

Favoritemandms:  soontobeford:  thanks for your reviews ladies! I’m in the NY/PA area and we looked at the Barn online and almost scheduled a visit before we found our venue in PA…

Sorry you both had bad experiences with them! I’m sort of freaking out for vendors, but i’m on the PA side of the border with our venue and the rules are quite a bit different over here (officiant is my biggest concern).

BurlapnLace:  Nope – The venue she’s talking about is just called “The Barn” in Ithaca. The one you were looking at does look beautiful though… I hope people have better experiences there!

Prior to looking at this venue, I looked up reviews. The reviews made me think twice, but this bride knew the look she was going for and had to have it. Proceed with caution. The first month I was talking to the owner via email. Every email I sent and received talked about a specific date. When it came time to sign the contract, the moron called me to tell me that he had accidentally double booked our date. I talked it over with my husband, and we decided that we could change the date in return we would get $500 off the venue that was offered to us at that time. Okay great. I emailed the venue owner over the course of the year with questions and was responded to within a day or two (usually).  When the day before my wedding rolled around, he was impossible to reach after he made his “check up” call at noon. We decided to make our own food for our wedding, and the biggest reason we went with this venue was because of the fridge storage and prep space. Upon arrival the fridge didn’t or. It refused to cool down and stay cool. All of the equipment was absolutely discusting and dirty and smelled. After 7 calls to the owner and two text messages later, no response. We had to take all the food we made back to the houses and pray to God it would all fit until the next morning when we could talk to the owner who said he would be at the venue all day for the wedding. The wedding day rolls around and the owner was asked why the fridge didn’t work and why he refused to take our calls the day before. His response claimed that the number I tried to call was his office phone and that he was not at his office and that that lune doesn’t accept texts. I still have those texts I sent and guess what, they never got returned and I never got a message back from the line stating that it didn’t accept text messages. The owner knew what was going on and lied and played dumb to try to cover up the fact that he’s not professional. He ended up getting someone into the venue the day of the weddig to fix the fridge so at least he did one thing right. As we were prepping the morning of my wedding it’s now mid morning. The owner decided to invite potential customers to look at the venue ON MY WEDDIG DAY! We payed to have the barn for that weekend and he rudely set up an appointment for some people to look at the venue while I was setting up for my wedding!!! And they didn’t stay out of the way either. The owner claimed he would be present the full day of the wedding but after his shenanigans, I think he realized I didn’t want him there and left and didn’t come back. My mother in law talked to the owner after everything was all cleaned up and made sure everything was in order and he said everything looked great. (I still have the text to prove it).  So here I am waiting to hear back from him about getting the deposit back. From other reviews, I saw that once he gets his money and the event is done, he goes mia and you can’t get your money back because he finds stupid excuses of something you did wrong. So far looking to be that way…  long story short, don’t do it. Its not worth the hassle of dealing with this guy. He is a liar and very unprofessional. If I don’t hear from him, like I’m anticipating, I will be taking him to court to get my money back.

Although this wasn’t a wedding, I wanted to make my story known so others wouldn’t fall victim to this man’s thievery.
We organized a university party at this venue in May. The organization with the owner was simple up until the event. Before the event, we were told we could set up at noon. We called the owner because we had some questions and he was surprised that we had arrived and told us that we had not let him know we would be setting up at that time. However, he continued to let us set up, so it was not a big deal.
We had hired buses to transport the guests to the event. The first guests arrived in their own vehicle, and the owner immediately told us that they had to leave, as the contract indicated that no guests could arrive in their own vehicles. We were confused, as this was the first time we heard of this, but complied and told the guests to relocate the car. Throughout the night, a few (between four and five) more people arrived in personal vehicles, and we told them to remove their cars from the property. They all did.
At the end of the event, after helping clean trash and spilled drinks throughout the night, we asked the owner if we needed to return the next day to clean up. He said we did not as there was not anything else to clean. There were no damages to the property.
A few weeks later, we had still not received the security deposit back. We attempted to contact him and did not hear back for two weeks, until he wrote back saying that we had broken the contract by having people arrive in their personal vehicles. We reviewed the contract we signed, and NO WHERE did it say anything about people not being able to arrive in their own cars. In fact, online his venue is listed as having ample parking. We wrote back, asking for a copy of the contract with our signatures three weeks ago and have followed up three more times, and still no reply. We are looking to pursue legal action.

Wonderful place for a wedding……beautiful and unique! We loved the flexibility in doing things our way and having the place for the whole weekend. I would definitely check it out!

soontobeford :

Favoritemandms :  We arranged a last minute wedding at The Barn for my daughter after her original venue fell through this Summer.

With 150 guests invited, this was obviously a very stressful siuation for my family.

The Barn was originally our first choice, but with all the other expenses associated with a wedding, we opted for a less expensive venue….bad choice on our part.

Luckily, the owner had an opening on a Sunday for us. He was very flexible with our payment and gave us the opportunity to pay in a couple of installments given our situation.

Following the wedding on Saturday, he cleaned up the venue overnight and made sure that it was available to us first thing on Sunday morning for my daughter’s wedding.

The wedding was wonderful and everything turned out great largely in part to the flexibility and help from Phil, the owner. He made a very last minute situation much easier and made it seem almost simple….probably since he does a wedding every weekend! I really appreciate his help with it all.

I post this not only in appreciation but in response to some of the rude nonsense in other reviews on this site. I would be highly skeptical of such lop-sided critical reviews as I experienced nothing but positive. Our group had a great time and I would highly recommend The Barn.
