Looking back on the last 6ish years, the best things I can think of are a nice watch and golf lessons. Maybe I'm a bad gift giver.
What's the best gift you've given your DH/FI/SO?
I'm a bad gifter for sure.
But in the past two years, my SO has really stepped it up and got me a pearl necklace (CRAZY nice, big black/green pearls he had his mother/grandmother get when they were on a trip to China) and a debit card with enough money for us to take a trip to Europe with. *I kinda wish he'd just put the money he spent on those two gifts together and gotten me an e-ring, but that's another story :)
Best sentimental gift - I made him a slide show of pictures of us, little sayings (ex. "I can't wait to be Mrs. xxxxx; I love you; Happy anniversary, etc.) and played it for him on the Wii w/background music. He loved it
Best "gift": tickets to see George Lopez in person! I was proud of that one b/c tickets were a pretty penny lol
The best gift:
My FH is a HUGE Buffy fan (like, HUGE!), and I got him an autographed copy of the script of the Buffy pilot episode. It’s the whole script, and then the front page is autographed by the cast.
He told his good friend (who is also a Buffy fan) who said “Wow, it’s like Gabrielle read a really, really good version of the book “The Rules”!” LOL
The second best gift is that he’s a big comic book fan, and I got him a limited edition print that’s handsigned by Jack Kirby. I wanted to get him an original page by Kirby, but those are going for like $6k or much more (just a tad out of my budget to say the least!), but the print is 1 of like only 175, and the signature is handdone by Kirby’s – it’s not a print. It’s a pretty large piece, and it’s very cool, if I do say so myself!
Hmm. I think I've gotten a few good ones. I got him cufflinks made from pieces of Shea Stadium, before it was torn down (he's a huuuuge Mets fan). And for his birthday last year I took him on a sunset boat ride around Manhattan, and we were served sushi and champagne :) (unfortunately we weren't by ourselves, as theer were about 15 other people on this boat enjoying the sushi and the ride as well, but it was still pretty darn romantic!).
I'm definitely a bad gift-giver and I'm like the guy in our relationship sometimes. He remembers everything I say that I like or am interested in (even the most random things that come out of my mouth when we're driving). He's very thoughtful!
The best he will get from me will be his wedding gift: a 42" LED TV he's been drooling over since he laid eyes on them at Costco. But it's pretty hard not to give it because he's been pining over it for months.
Best gift I've given to my FI - probably the time when before I was leaving to go backpacking in SE Asia for a couple of months, I wrote him a letter for each day I would be gone and put it in a box with a few pictures of us... which is so funny cause I am SO not a mushy person but he just brings it out in me I guess.
I gave him all the seasons of Smallville and Stargate last christmas. I didn't consider it that good of a gift but FI went CRAZY lol if he only knew I got them all on sale on black friday ;)
Best gift he ever gave me? Well he has given me tons of expensive gifts like on x-mas he got me a HUGE Coach tote a Coach wristlet and my two pairs of UGG's or for my last b-day a shiny brand new Sony Vaio laptop but the best gift ever was for a V-Day he WROTE me and recorded the song for me! He is soooo shy and yet he sang a song for me, He doesnt sing or write! OMG it has seriously been the best gift I have ever received.
My FI is a HUGE pearl jam fan and they were playing last Halloween in Philadelphia. FI is also a huge history buff. SOOOOO I bought tickets and a hotel room and we drove down from Boston area for the weekend and did site seeing. It was a amazing. Each year I take him on a weekend getaway usually to Boston because I can't afford anything more but it is still nice to get away.
I did give him a nice handcarved chess set made with real ebony wood that I know will last a lifetime.
But I think he likes the netflix subscription the best of all the gifts I've ever given him. Easy to please!
for our first dating anniversary I made FH a book of our first year together, (had it printed on snapfish). it took me forever to put together. he cried and said no one has every done anything so thoughtful for him.
He also really the new snowboarding Burton Jacket and Pants I got him last Christmas and the two new Hugo Boss suits I got him for our last anniversary.
I loooove giving gifts, (almost as much as receiving them).
Our first Christmas/birthday together (our birthdays are right after Christmas) I got my FI (then BF) a Wii. His face lit up and he looked like a child on Christmas morning. It was awesome!!!
Lets see, I've gotten him a Nintendo DS, DSL Camera and I made him a quilt. I feel like it is hard to top myself now.
2 years ago I got him Philly Eagles tix for his birthday.
Then last year for his 30th birthday, I made him a book on Snapfish. I had his friends (who were traveling for his surprise party I planned) email me their fave pics of them with him over the year and also give funny and sweet quotes about him. I presented him the book during his party. He loved it!
@Meowkers He made me a book from Snapfish for our 1 yr anniversary too. It is amazing. :)
His favorite singer is Alan Jackson- so for his birthday this year, I got him 2 floor seats tickets for the concert. Just this weekend when we were driving and listening to Alan Jackson- he mentioned how amazing the concert was!
And for christmas last year- one of his gifts was a photobook from Snapfish. He teared up looking at it and said he'd never had someone spend so much time on a gift for him.
My FI loves Aerosmith. When I found out they were playing in Pittsburgh, I had to buy tickets. I bought the tickets the morning they went on sale and was able to get 15th row seats. I was sooo excited to tell him about it but I wanted to see his face so I refused to talk to him on the phone because I knew I'd spill the beans. When I saw him that night, I told him. I will never forget the look on his face. He was so surprised and excited. I loved making him so happy.
We've been dating five years, and every Christmas the rule is you can only spend $5 and you must write a letter (I guarentee myself a love letter every year!) We were doing long distance and he kept a scrapbook in which he cut out newspaper articles, pictures, even my Metro ticket stub from a visit, and pasted them with notations in a book for me. He is not crafty at all so this was big! In the meantime, I had been keeping a journal for him (something I have never been able to do and he had mentioned would be nice) We each opened a little black cloth covered book that had cost us $5 at the same time that Christmas - it is still one of our favorites!
A gumball machine (with extra refills).
It was especially fitting because he is a fidgeter and likes to chew on everything from pen caps to staples (which drives me crazy). It was a win-win situation; he got a gumball machine, and I got to stop worrying about him cutting his tongue with a staple. It also made him the most popular person in his house.
+1 @chocolatemalt:! Lol - But he hasn't gotten that gift yet.
In our relationship, I think the best I've done is tracking down the Red Wings championship hat while on a layover in Detroit... as no one sells hockey stuff here...
Looking forward, his wedding gift will be my chastity ring which I've worn (successfully, lol!) since I was 16. It was blessed by Pope John Paul II and is currently on a chain around my neck. I think it will be hard to top that!
A flying lesson! I got to go with him, and it was AMAZING! Coolest thing ever (and surprisingly affordable!)
I surprised The Guy with a trip to Vegas for his 30th birthday. I couldn't keep it from him until the very end, as he was getting very suspicious, so a couple nights before we were to leave I picked up Chinese food for dinner and swapped out one of their fortune cookies for one with a custom message inside that told him about the trip!
Keeping the secret was SO difficult, but totally worthwhile.
lol @chocolatemalt!
@hergreenapples, a Vegas trip?? so awesome! what a lucky guy! and what a cute way to tell him about it.
We tend not to spend lots of money on each other for presents, but once we start making the money we probably will splurge more.
I think the best gift I gave him was homemade ice cream cake. He still talks about it.
I gave him a really snazzy Michael Kors watch :) I also did a DIY boudior photography book for him that I was pretty proud of ;)
I LOVE giving gifts. I plan them months in advance. One bday I got him Carrie Underwood tix row 6 he was in HEAVEN. I also gave him a guitar, after he kept saying he wanted to learn how to play. That was the most amount of money I've spent on a gift. Actually probably that I'd spent on a purchase at that point. yooowza. But in return I got a love song for vday this year :)
The best sentimental gift I gave my FI was a card for Christmas (: Inside was a note from the Canadian Cancer Society detailing the donation I made in his name in memorium of his mom. He cried when he opened it (: so cute!
The best "gift" gift was a Yamaha keyboard. I got it for him for our first Christmas together when we were 17. It ended up being almost $500 and now the "student" me wouldn't even think of spending that, but I didn't think twice back then haha. That same Christmas I also got him 24 bottles of his favourite Gatorade!
Will Clark's rookie baseball card.
Who's Will Clark you ask? Some random 1B who played baseball during the 90s. One of the first things FI and I connected on was our love of baseball, which naturally got into questions about our favorite players and teams growing up....so when he told me that Will Clark was his favorite player, I decided I needed to get that card.
Long story short--I was living in DE at the time for an internship--I spent a good week's worth of nights after work driving all over the state to find a baseball card shop that had it in stock. The card was worth about $2.50...so basically dumb luck that I actually managed to find it since it was worth next to nothing....but Fi definitely appreciated it. Eventhough he already had the exact card, he keeps the one I gave him in his wallet as a reminder of how much I love him.
Best $2.50 ever spent.
I'm definitely a bad gift giver. FI's birthday is Christmas Eve so I tend to buy one gift and I'm going to try really hard not to do that this year. He totally gets ripped off!! The best gift I gave him was a $350 Scotty Cameron putter (golf) and he loved it. But I definitely need to step it up because he got me a trip to Japan for Christmas one year
I started saving for his grad school gift, because he is graduating next year, so I wanted to either get him an apple computer or just cash to be like, "see how much money I saved?" (he thinks I tend to shop too much and spend to much;) So I worked hard at saving and then I was going to give him $500 in stocks for our wedding to give a gift for him/us to save for a house and put toward our future...then I realized I had all the money I had saved and instead of having it just sit in the house ( i know dumb idea) I should have it gaining interest or in the stock market....so long story short, one day, not his graduation day and not our wedding day I just brought him into the bedroom and gave him $2300 in cash and said surprise,,,now do with this what you want...invest or get a new computer. I explained about how I wanted to get him stocks but also was saving for a graduation gift and wanted him to use the money now in case he wanted to invest. He looked at me and was sooo happy I worked so hard saving all that money...then he said that he wanted to put it toward my car payment so we could pay my car off sooner. I felt bad because I wanted it to be a gift for me, but I can't help but smile about how practical he is and how much he loves me that he would think to do that.
Sharks tickets, 4th row... those were amazing seats, so I also enjoyed that gift. I also got him a really nice cuisinart food processor (he's the cook in the family).
And while I didnt pay for this next one, I let him get it and put it in the house, so its kinda a gift.... He bought a craps table. Yes, a craps table. Its in our garage, which has become like a freaking game room with a pool table, couch and tv. So the fact that I let him get that (I say "let" because we could have spent that money on sooooo many other things we need), he says its basically a gift. :)
He will be getting an autographed Team Canada Olympic Crosby jersey for his birthday in September. He will love it!
@Meowkers: I did the same for our second anniversary with our favorite pics and tons of little details and cute notes on every page. I worked on it for weeks and my friend even had to help me. I wrote a nice letter to put at the end of it. He cried a LOT! (he'd kill me if he sees this).
It was a scrapbook actually
@chocolatemalt: That too was very special to him :D
