I had a c section and the total bill ended up just over 27k and were in the dallas area.
I also delivered in Sept and got my portion of the bill what insurance payed. Mine was $14,000 something for 2 days. Luckily insurance payed almost all of it.
Now I am scared to see what my son's bill will be, he had to stay in the NICU unit for almost a month due to he was 7 weeks early.
And I am in the metro area of Minneapolis, MN area
We have not had children yet, but that sounds normal to me- at least considering I had my appendix out this year and it was $36,000! Yip. :/
Wow! I live in the DC area but my total was less than 7k, and about $650 for my son. I had a low risk vaginal delivery with epidural & pitocin and stayed for 2 days, he didn't need anything beyond the standard shots/tests.
@eurekaanchovies: We were told that before insurance it would cost about 22k for a NORMAL vaginal delivery with no drugs or c-section (in the seattle area). So yes, I think that is normal!
Thank goodness that with our insurance we will pay less than 1k.
Wow that seems so expensive. I had a c-section and it was around $6000. DD's bill was about $800. Thankfully insurance pays for it. I would be flabbergasted if my bill was that expensive.
Our hospital bill for a normal vaginal delivery and about 36 hour hospital stay was 20k; the epidural (the only med/intervention I had) was another 2k. And I live in the middle of nowhere, lol!
Thanks for the responses. It sounds like there's great variability in the cost of delivery depending on where you live. I'm really curious about what the itemization looks like. I may try to request an itemized bill from the hospital.
Oh wow!!! It makes me glad canada has free health care...that's a crazy amount of money!
I'm also in NYC. I had a csection (no induction or labor first) with 4 nights in the hospital and my bill was over 50k. We owed less than 1k with insurance.
Canada's health care isn't exactly "free", it's just something everyone contributes to. Canadian doctors and hospitals still cost money.
My delivery might cost $25K+ but with my health insurance my max out of pocket will be $1000.
Wow thats so expensive! So strange to hear how much it costs in the US when its free in England :/ x
Our total bill was just under $25K, but our share was a little over $400.
It's true that Canadians are taxed more heavily ... but to not have to worry about medical insurance and the cost of that insurance is worth it to me. Would hate to know what a complicated child birth would cost someone :s
Ours was close to 40K, but that included a NICU stay. It adds up when they charge you $6 for a Motrin! Seriously get an itemized bill and you'd be amazed.
Depends on your insurance's agreement with your hospital. It's all "prearranged" and then after that, the insurance restates what it says the allowed amount is and then pays that (less the deductible and/or co-insurance depending on your plan). Then the doctor or hospital has to adjust the billed amount to fit that, and then you get the bill for the deductible and/or the co-insurance.
Insurance is a big crazy game. There is no "single price" for a "simple" hospital visit.
FWIW I am NOT a biller, but I work in a very small medical office so we all have lunch together every day and get updates on billing. :P
@camrie:the itemized bills always blow my mind! lol
In Massachusetts everyone has to have health insurance.
holy cow. I have never been more grateful for our health insurance. No co-pays for the entire prenatal care..only $250 to admit to hospital.
It was around $25K for me, and about $5K for baby...they charged me $4K for C-section surgery alone, not sure what made up the other $21K. Also, of the 5 grand they charged for the baby, $4K of that was just for keeping her in the nursery for 3 days...even though she was with ME for most of that!
That is only what the hospital bills though. No one pays that. If you are uninsured, they'll give you more than a 50% discount (which would still be about $14K out of pocket, scary). The insurance company re-negotiates what they'll pay. I think they talked them to around $13K total for both me and baby.
Has anyone prepaid for a delivery? I ask this because it looks like I may be doing that. However, what I've noticed is that when deliveries are prepaid then they don't cost nearly as much. I wonder if the hospitals charge the insurance companies more because they know that they will get paid.
We are paying out of pocket. 15,000 all together. But we are billed from about half a dozen different places.. one hospital bill for baby, one hospital bill for me, one for meds, one for labs..one for the doctor, one for pediatrician, one to an ultrasound tech (for baby after birth) etc.
If it were all one payment a month that would be easier. its a scary amount.
Wow these numbers are crazy! My copays are high ($20 primary and $50 specialist ) so I'm assuming ill have to pay a lot out of pocket. Did any of you ladies call your insurance company to find out how much you should expect to pay out of pocket?
@Sugaree: I prepaid with my daughter. I was uninsured. I had a no complication vaginal delivery with a one night stay (pitocin, antibiotics, some stool softeners, and tylenol if you want to get specific.) I could have stayed two nights, but do not like hospitals and tried to get discharged ASAP. I paid the hospital $2,000 and my OB $700 for the delivery. I paid the anestesteciologist (I have no idea how to spell that) $850 for the epidural. That was in Las Vegas. If I'd had a c-section, I would have had to pay an extra $250 to my OB, but I believe the other charges would have been the same.
I think the cash discount for prepaid deliveries is actually because the hospital knows they will get paid! A lot of people who deliver at a hospital without insurance skip out on the bill after the baby is born, so the hospital takes less money because they know they actually get paid. Of course, insurance billing is total crap, so there's that, too.
Baby X's birth-- in the Seattle area, with an epidural and c-section, 48 hr hospital stay-- came to $18,000 ish.
The 3 times I was checked in triage were $500 or so each time. Just to have someone check my cervix! But it sounds like overall, I'm still on the cheaper end of things. Wow.
this is the single most reason we're waiting to have kids. there is no way we could afford this! I have insurance but not maternity coverage as I buy it myself. I'm unemployed currently and my husbands' in grad school. If I got pregnant now I'd be paying the entire 25K myself out of pocket! No thanks! We'll wait until he's a CRNA and we can get great coverage for both of us and start a family!
For all the Canadian bees... Um... our deliveres aren't exactly 'free'. We pay taxes through our noses. And if you really calculate the average pay (~$45,000 - ~$60,000), you will see that if we paid even half of the taxes we do, we can save up to have a baby EVERY TWO-THREE YEARS and pay for it out of our pockets.
The sad part is that I don't even get Mat leave, but I pay taxes, which pays for other women's mat leaves. So I don't think anybody is gettng anything for free around here. Someone or other is paying for it.

I have to say I am blown away.
I just got the bill from our hospital delivery from September. It was an uncomplicated vaginal delivery and there was no epidural. I stayed two nights, which I understand is normal. Our portion of the bill was very reasonable, thanks to insurance. But the total cost? Just under $25,000!
Is this average? We live in the metropolitan New York area, and I realize that this may play a factor in the cost.
If you have this information for your delivery, would you mind sharing it?
Many thanks!
