So FH and I weren’t going to do wedding cake, but then we realized that our caterer wants to charge us $9 per person for plated desert (seems kinda crazy). I started looking into it and realized I can get cupcakes for 100 people for less than $300 (and they’re YUMMY).
So here’s my question(s)
1. Regular Sized or Mini
2. How many a person
3. How many flavours

@MsGinkgo: i say regular, reckon the sponge is more moist than it would be if they were mini. You could have say up to 3 flavours a chocolate flavour, vanilla and then a fruit flavour too. I had them at our wedding, my Mum made them, it had been my wish since I was 7, we just had vanilla.

I think it would be more fun to have mini cupcakes in a bunch of different flavors. That way everyone could try a few different flavors. I have no idea how many cupcakes people normally eat, but I would think if they were regular size- 2 per person, and if they were mini sized maybe 3 or 4 per person. Everyone I know loves cupcakes, and they are the first thing to be devoured at parties and pot lucks.

I would do mini cupcakes. Every wedding I have been to that had regular cupcakes, people left them half eaten.
Face it, the best part of a cupcake is the frosting. For a bit of fun, I would even put one some cupcake liners filled with frosting!

I would prefer mini. Eating a regular cupcake can be messy, and when I’m all dressed up and look chic, I don’t enjoy having icing all over my face, or have small parts of cupcake fall into my cleavage. Because yes, that happens, lol ! I would go with the mini cupcakes. Have 2 or 3 per person.

I think regular or mini would be fine. The last wedding I was at they ordered 500 mini cupcakes but the bakery messed up and made them all regular sized. Needless to say, we ate a lot of cupcakes! lol

@NauticalDisaster: this is why i’m leaning towards mini – the big ones are hard to eat delicately. I suppose we could probably do a mix of both though…have some mini and some regular…

I had both regular and mini and a bunch of other stuff. It was gorgeous and everyone raved over the presentation.

I vote mini, because the frosting to cake ratio is usually so much better (mm, frosting) and easier to eat.
I like the idea of having one signature flavor and something plain (chocolate or vanilla). Maybe you could have one of each flavor for each person?

We did cupcakes…
I think we did 80 mini and 80 regular for 80 people, and about 8 different flavours in amounts of 12-24 of each flavour roughly, the regualr sized ones were the flavours that came with filling, the mini were just the cafe+frosting style ones. They were almost all gone at the end of the night 🙂
