Wow, awesome story!
When we were picking out my ring, we had gone to several jewelry store and tried on a lot of different rings. One stood out in particular, and the Dude knew it was the one he had to get me (but he didn't tell me that). So later, not knowing that he'd already picked out and purchased my ring, I convinced him to go back to this particular jewelry store to try on the ring that I loved again. We got a different person working than the last time, so this person had no idea that he'd already bought my ring. I actually tried on the ring he'd already purchased for me, not knowing it was my ring! Luckily I didn't see the tag on it, which had his last name written on it!
when i picked out my ring it was originally a very light, almost grey amethyst, grade c........... and a size 7. i am a 10.
so they sent it out to be sized locally.
the local jeweler could not resize it without adjusting the main stone, which would void the warrenty, so they had to send it back to the companys headquarters where they could do the work.
well headquarters could not make it work with the main stone either, so they had to find another cushion cut amethyst to fit. all they had was a darker stone, that was a grade a.
it ended up taking a full five weeks, but i got it back sized with an even better stone at no extra charge.
i was a very happy lady and love my ring
@Offbeat Bride. I'd love to see a pic of your ring! It sounds really cool.
this is basically it........... with the exception that it is side mounted. there are six diamonds on each side

It's really pretty! I love the center stone. I'm totally getting myself a right-hand ring with an aquamarine stone one of these days!!
@mouse, Wow what a close call! I actually have a second anecdote related to the subject of almost finding out accidentally. FI came to visit me for the weekend of my graduation thinking he would propose when I got off the stage with my diploma. He got there on a Saturday and the graduation was to be on Monday. Well, Saturday he starts getting calls from his mom's coworkers at the jewelry store saying "Have you asked her yet??" He's sitting two feet away from me desperately turning down the volume on his phone, not realizing that when he turns it down all the way it switches to speakerphone! Fortunately the woman on the other end had stopped talking about it by that point, but he nearly had a heart attack and that is pretty much the sole reason why he dropped down on his knee right there in my apartment. :)
mouse- know what is funny....... my right hand ring is all diamonds. lol

I had to share this great anecdote about what my little ring had to go through to get onto my hand.
FI's mother works at a jewelry store. About 6 weeks before my graduation from grad school, he emailed his mother (who lives 3,000 miles from him) to say he wanted to start "shopping." Two weeks of frantically swapped emails went by. He describes this period as "I kept sending her things being like I HAVE NO IDEA, IS THIS GOOD OR NOT and all she would say was 'I'm sure she'll like whatever you get her.'" FMIL describes this period as "He kept sending me pictures of butt-ugly rings and I had to find tactful ways of steering him toward the good stuff."
ANYWAY.
He finally picks one out, and they agree to put FMIL's stone from her engagement ring in mine as an heirloom! (She has upgraded, so no worries about her being bare-fingered). Great, let's get this ring made, and we need it in... less than four weeks? Including shipping across the country? Oh, no.
FMIL can see from a mile away that this isn't going to get set in time. So she decides to pull some strings. She calls her friends at [Very Major Large Important Diamond Jewelry Corporation] and says, "Is there any way this can get finished in three weeks?" The reply: mostly laughter. "Okay, so did I mention that this is for my son?" Still not going to happen on this planet.
Time for the big guns!
FMIL calls in a favor with her very good friend who is in a serious relationship with a fellow who happens to be employed as a Vice President at [Very Major Large Important Diamond Jewelry Corporation].
"Did I mention this is for my SON??!!"
Lo and behold, the ring made it in time!
I think it's a great story, I plan on telling it to our kids for sure. What about you guys, did anyone else's ring have a harrowing journey to make it onto your finger?
