Oh, fun! Your house is so pretty, and will be really gorgeous with your updates. I think the hardwood will really open up the rooms, too. What color is most of your furniture that will be in there?
I'll have to take some before pictures when we get into the apartment on June 1st. We won't be painting anything but the bedroom (it's BROWN right now) but we'll be doing major cleaning and bringing in our own furniture. Right now it's so cluttered with the current tenants' things that it looks teeny tiny.
We've been doing lots of stuff lately, but the one I have pictures of is replacing the lighting in our kitchen.
Here's the before:
And here's the after (with a bulb missing):
I don't have any good pics yet cuz my camera cord is broken, but I hope to take some with my sisters after we close next week so I can post! The floors and painting have already been done, so now we just have to do a few things before we can move in
Great jobs everyone! We've done A LOT of work on our house since we bought it in August. However, the first and big one was gutting the kitchen. I can't capture it well in pictures though. Our door and trim are now painted with a new trim color- more of an ivory than the stark white it was before- that was an expensive mistake!
What a great thread! I'll definitely be checking back on this one. I've been meaning to take pictures of our new fence. Maybe this will prompt me to do it. :-)
LOVING what I'm seeing so far! Isn't amazing what some paint, light fixtures, and TLC can do?!
I can't wait to post pictures later (late tonight) of yesterday's work! We started laying the wood laminate floors... and holy cow, the master bedroom is looking AMAZING! I'm in love with the floors we chose for the bedrooms.
On the downside, the quote we got apparently wasn't added right because we wound up spending about $1,000 more on the materials than the quote was. Not only that, but it's looking like they didn't even allot us enough! We're probably going to have to pick up more wood! grrrr
Here are our updates!

We did recessed lighting.
BEFORE:

AFTER! It is SOO much nicer. My FI just used the holes that were already there for the fans and put lights there and then we put in a few more holes/lights.

I love before & after pics!
@caszos: LOVE the lighting, what a difference!
@KLP2010: This isn't my laundry room, but I just love this color for a mud/laundry room becasue it feels so clean :)
I love this thread!
Here is my favortie room that we're done so far....my craft room! Although we still have a few things left to do....like framing out the closet.
Before:
I'm going to post my almost complete closet as well cause I'm so proud of all the work I did for it!
One more and then I'm stopping! This is the only other room we've done so far, the master bedroom!
Wow! Awesome transformations!
Every day after work this is what I work on...
Before Above....
.... and After.
We do still need to polish and add quarter round, etc... but I'm really proud of us, it's looking amazing! So much better looking that the carpet!
KLP, the hardwood looks great!! Was it hard to install it yourself? Had you done it before, or just teach yourself along the way?
My mom wants to try installing them in her house, but shes nervous and doesn't know what shes doing!!
Holy Cow Mrs.Goodie, that is quite a craft room! I wish I had all that storage etc!
@AnnieAAA, I love that color of your laundry room, it does look clean.
Your houses are gorgeous! And the updates are stunning!
We've been slow to tackle the updates on our 75year old home since it's all going to be DIY.
So far, the only noticeable cosmetic updates has been painting the upstairs, which was in dire need of a new pallette choice
before:

AFTER:

We've got a lot to do still, frame in the windows, replace the lighting [we want to go recessed], lay flooring, trim, re-insulate the attic space & cut in closets; and that's just the upstairs.
We've been super busy re-insulating the basement & tackling the outside clean up [it's surprising the things you'll find when people have been storing things for almost a century] our house definitely fell in the category of 'needs TLC' haha.

Bostongrl25 - It's wood laminate. But, the one we chose for the bedrooms looks VERY much like the hardwood my parents have. I would not suggest doing real wood yourself. It's a much more difficult install. The price for a pro to install the laminate was the same per sq. foot as our materials! So, that was a no brainer decision as laminates are "knee hurting" but "easy" to DIY.
The process of doing this is an easy learning project. I have to say though, having a friend who has done this at least 3 other times helped a lot the first day! So far, we have no scraps! VERY exciting! lol. The closets and stuff are the hardest parts. Otherwise they all just click into place!
The picture below is of me just doing the prep work before FI got home. You wind up cutting the end piece and that becomes the start piece for the next row. So, I've been laying the underlayment and getting most of the rows mainly together so that all we have to do at night is cut the end piece and click the next row into the other one.
Kitchen is officially 100% unpacked, organized and ready to go! The tape on the cabinets is "what went where" and we still need to shave off part of the cabinet lip to slide the fridge in...
Before:
After:

We've only primed the walls white, we're still choosing colors :-)
Ooooo Aaahhhhh over the kitchen.
KLP, we almost have the same stove. And I'm pretty sure we have that fridge =].
Our next project is going to be tiling our fireplace and doing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. I'm thinking both in white. Here's the tile I picked out.
@MissGoodie: I'm drooling over your craft room!
@KLP2010: We are choosing a new color for our family room (after living with our previous choice for a few months we really want to change it) and it's sooo hard! Do you have any close contenders?

I thought it could be nice if we posted a running thread of the updates we're doing on our new houses and apartments!
We've done a lot, but here's the current project... along with replacing floors
It's getting there! We're still trying to figure out a color... any suggestions? This is the Laundry room
So, let's see some before and midway or after images!
