@HelloRaeven:  If you get the correct size garter, it’ll stay on. We eloped and weren’t going to do this tradition anyway, but you are “supposed” to wear it all day. It makes for some great getting ready photos. That being said, you can do whatever you feel comfortable with!

It is YOUR wedding after all 🙂

I would just put it on before the dance. I know lots of brides wear it the whole day. But it would totally annoy me during the ceremony especially because it has no real function.

I was well into my twenties before pantihose generally replaced stockings, so if I sort back far enough in my dusty old brain I can remember wearing garters for the simple non-romantic purpose of holding my stockings up. They are not pleasant. However, if you are wearing an ankle-length evening dress, you only need to hold up your stockings to knee-height, and therefore you can wear your garter just below your knee and above the bulge of your calf muscle. And in that position they do not slide down.

When worn high on the thigh, they slide down whether you have chunky legs or nice muscular toned legs, because the thigh generally tapers toward the knee. You have to have very tight elastic, and preferably a latex coated friction band inside the stocking, to keep a stocking up that high without resorting to that very-much-more-comfortable invention, the garter-belt. And you really do not want the groom tossing a garter-belt: that would be undeniably vulgar.

Short answer: wear your garter all day, but wear it just below the knee where it is comfortable and secure.

I had no idea what to do with the garter so I put it on before the ceremony (I was afraid I would forget).  Unfortunately I was freaking out that it would fall off that I hiked it way up my thigh.  Poor DH was kinda freaking during the taking off thinking “umm… where is it?”

I’m plus sized, and the garter stayed on with no problems.  It’s a bit elastic, so it can’t really slide down over your knee without help.

@Missbliss:  Can you explain what the tradition of the garter toss is? I’m not sure what it is at all.

I bought my garter on Etsy, and she custom made it to the same size my thigh is. It was fairly comfortable.

@mrspinesol:  The garter toss is the North American version of the bouquet toss, only for boys. The groom pulls the garter off of the bride’s leg and flings it over his shoulder at all the waiting single men at the wedding. Legend states that the man who catches it is the next to get married.

I’m wearing one….it’s gorgeous. Unlike anything I’ve seen. I’m wearing it for photos and then I’ll wear it our wedding night just for fun. It’s just us, so no toss, unless to a stranger. Lol
