i'm getting married in albany, and our photographers often travel to NYC for weddings. they are super affordable (we are going with the package just below the top one and it's under $2000), and they do beautiful work. i'm sure that even with travel they'd be less than NYC area photogs.
check out their website:
http://www.upstatephotographers.com/
we loved their style and attitude, and the fact that we'll have 2 people shooting on our wedding day.
if you decide to set up an appointment, tell them nicole and patrick sent you :-)
I got married in Syracuse and my photographer also does wedding in NYC for the same price (I think). He is pretty young, so I think his prices are still low. I'm guessing that most photographers downstate are much more expensive anyway.
Here's his website.

Last I knew, his prices started at about $2,000 and went up to about $4.000... and his work is FANTASTIC.
Best of luck to you :)
A friend of mine used this fellow and loved him:

I think he said he was incredibly inexpensive (definitely less than $2,00) did exactly what he asked and their photos were pretty good! I think he's based in Jersey, but I'm sure he'd do New York/West Chester.
a knottie friend of mine used julia newman for her westchester wedding and raved about her. i think her prices might have gone up a bit since then, but still, at just under $2500 i think she'd be worth it!
another "up and coming" area photographer based in NJ is tony yang. he photographed mrs. ant's wedding and took my boudior photos (he calls them "intime"). he is still under 3K (used to be $1,900 but got really popular in the last year partly thanks to weddingbee)!
also the NY magazine wedding's on-line is a good resource -- it gives an idea of prices for each photogarpher and links to websites: http://nymag.com/weddings/listings/photographers/
hope this helps get you stared on your search.
Thanks SO much for all the info - will definiltely look into all options posted.
and thanks for being so warm & welcoming!
One of my friends does wedding photography at a reasonable price ($2000). It's not as traditional, more arty, but I love his work (wedding and otherwise) - I would have hired him except I'm getting married in Indianapolis!

just had a chance to look at one of the sites, Radish - i absolutely LOVE the pics from the link you sent! i've already sent an email out to them...thank you!
I am using Sarah Tew and found her work excellent and very affordable (www.sarahtew.com). I also have heard good things about Aaron Almendral (http://www.artbydna.com/aaron/) and his prices are WAY below any NYC photog have I have come across.
Hope that helps!
budgetgirl - no problem... glad I could help! ![]()
I am just so happy with our wedding pictures (which I have yet to post on weddingbee because I'm such a slacker) and he was one of the more reasonably priced photographers that I came accross but his eye and talent are top notch. He is a super nice guy too and very easy to work with.
I read a tip in a budget book one time that recommended contacting the art schools in the area. They could very well have upperclassmen(women) who are looking to build their portfolios. Good luck.
I would say try checking out photos on flickr.com. There's a lot of talanted new photographers. You can approach a particular photographer, check their profile and see where they're located. or even put up a post.
My second choice for photographers was Yun Gen Yang (http://www.yangphoto.com/) whose prices start at $1800. Although we decided to go with someone else, I still love Yun's work and I would recommend him in a heartbeat.
I posted about flickr, because I figured you could probably find someone who would do a full day shoot for under $1000, just so they could build their portfolio. But if you looking for right under the $2000 range you can try ryanbrenizer.com. I've had a couple friends use him, he charges $1850, for a full day, and includes a free engagement or trash-the-dress shoot.
once again, thanks sooo much for the all the info. I've already contacted a few of the photographers and am looking forward to hearing what each has to offer.
For NYC I'd suggest looking here... http://apracticalwedding.com/category/vendors/vendor-list/
I was soo excited that I found the perfect post but then I began contacting the photographers and realized that all the prices have doubled since. LOL. Anyone has anything more recent?
Yes! You can get a photo/video package for $2,300 with my pals, Allen and Alonzo. Check them out and call them.
www.photographyby.zo (very talented black guy who is sooooooo nice!)
www.allenspatzphotography.com (wonderful older man who takes his time getting the shots you want - he works with a Latina videographer - very, very nice!)
Good luck!

Hi there - i'm new to the board. Wanted to start off by saying how very helpful/resourceful you guys are. I've learned a lot from everyone, thanks!
My fiance & I are on a VERY tight budget (as i'm sure you've heard before)...and we're looking for the most affordable photographers that anyone can recommend. we were told to check for up&coming photographers who need/want to build up their portfolio but have no idea where to even begin this type of search. any and all info would be much appreciated.
thanks!!!
