i got married 5 weeks ago and right up to the wedding my husband and i discussed my intention to keep my maiden name and he was ok with it.
my main reasons were, not in any particular order
1. I wanted to continue my family name so my family tree is traceable and as my brother is intellectually disabled he will not be able to pass on my maiden name
2. All my professional qualifications and resume history is in my maiden name and I am currently job seeking
3. I don’t want to share my last name with my husbands ex wife ( possibly selfish)
4. My husband has adult sons and their wives have taken their name I need to distinguish my place in the family as I won’t be taking on any parental roles to his kids.
since the wedding I have been copping a bit of flack from friends and family that I haven’t changed my name, now I am considering hyphenating my name to include m py husbands name **sigh**
we do not have any children together, is it really that important I take my new husbands name?
not to mention changing all my ID documents, lengthy and time consuming
