This idea was brought up by andy113 in another post. I had never heard of it before but of course am always intrigued (obsessed) with gender prediction. I had never heard of the nub theory before but as soon as andy113 mentioned it, I started googling away and then of course broke out plenty of u/s pictures from our NT scan. I figured I would share some of the information I found, since I think this is so interesting.
This site http://www.parentdish.co.uk/2009/06/03/nub-theory-baby-gender-prediction-at-12-weeks/ has the better explanation of the Nub Theory
and this site http://baby2see.com/gender/external_genitals.html has better example pictures.
And for those who don't want to click links the idea is that the angle of a "nub" that all babies have, predicts the gender earlier than ever thought before. Here's a couple of the pics from site #2

Woah! That is very very interesting! I've never heard of that before! Neat!
I've never heard of this before! Very cool. I wonder how accurate it actually is.
@Mrs.KMM: From what I'm reading most techs say they can guess with 75% accuracy based on the nub theory.
Funny! I was just reading about this. I have my NT scan on Friday, I'm hoping I can try out this theory and figure out if we are having a boy or a girl. I'll be almost 13 weeks at my NT scan.
@krsmall: My pics are from when I was 13 weeks and there is a nub. Based on the theory it's a girl. My a/s scan is on the 17th, so I'll see if it's accurate for me.
Ooh...this is interesting. I'm going in for an 8/9-week ultrasound on Thursday, so I'll have to look for the nub! We don't plan to find out the gender of our baby until he/she is born, so we'll have to wait a while to see if it proves accurate for us!
Hmm... is that how the doctor who did my NT scan predicted the gender? She thought she knew the gender based on my ultrasound (@13 weeks), and she was correct!
I had an ultrasound at 11 w 2 days, and the tech told us that she is 99% sure of the sex. We had another ultrasound at 12 w 1 day. The baby was measuring a little ahead at 12 w 5 days, and the tech (a different one) told us that she was 95-98% sure of the sex... the same sex!!!!
So I think there is some way that they can tell the sex so early.
But I think there is much more room for error so early, and a lot of people don't get too many ultrasounds, so ~18-20 weeks is a good time to confirm the gender.
How fascinating! Wish I had heard about this when I was pregnant, lol. Can't wait to hear if your prediction is correct. :)
I wish I had a shot of our baby from 12 weeks to be able to do the nub theory! It's definitely interesting. I have also heard about the skull theory but don't know how to decipher that one.
I had some of my friends pull out pics of their u/s from that time frame, and 5 nubs we could see all were in line with this theory.
i had never heard of it either until my FB group started talking about it! but yes, not all of them will show a nub and like i said, its only visible during a specific time frame (i think 8 week is too early to that previous poster who said she'd look for it at her 8/9 week unltrasound - my 8 week just looks like a tiny shrimp.....)
@andy113: My 9 week ultrasound still looked like a shrimp. A shrimp with a bit of a head. LOL. My 11 week looked like a real baby-- I was SHOCKED at the transformation in those two weeks. We've seen the nub at 11 and 12 weeks! (Supposedly it's a boy nub... we'll have to wait to confirm!)
I just pulled out my ultrasounds and both said girl and I have 2 little girls!
Well, I can't see any nub in my ultrasound!! :( It must've been too early?? I'm in my 9th week.
@bunnylovesbear: 9 weeks is too early. If you are doing the NT scan between 11 and 13 weeks there will be a nub.
Well, just had my NT scan at 13 weeks, 0 days today. :)
We don't plan on finding out the gender of our baby, but any guesses based on the nub theory?

@bunnylovesbear: i think it looks like a boy nub :) although i really have no idea lol
@bunnylovesbear: that looks like a girl nub since it's straight out and not pointed up
@mwitter80: I was thinking girl, too. I've been feeling it's a girl all along...guess we'll wait and see what happens in August!!
I wish I had a good pic from our early u/s. The only two we have that are side view I can't tell the nub at all =/
@bunnylovesbear: I have to agree with mwitter80 and say girl!
@bunnylovesbear: Do you have another photo? I don't think that's the nub that we see in the one you posted, it looks like the femur bone to me.
hey i have my 21 week scan soon, would love to no the sex, i have an 11 and 17 week scan pics please tell me if the sonographer was right...
Oh, so an update, when I went for my NT scan at 13 weeks and they said 95% chance it's a boy. I ended up getting poor NT scan results so I had to have a CVS test. And with a CVS test they actually count the chromosomes, and it turns out that the NT scan was correct, it is a boy! So, the nub theory worked for me.
@chazandbump: In the 11 week scan, that is the baby's leg, so you don't see the nub. But in your 17 week scan, that is definitely a nub and according to the info the OP posted, it's a boy!
@bebefly: Do you have another photo? We can't see the nub here, it's blocked by baby's leg as far as I can tell.
@chastenet: the only other picture I have from my week 13 scan doesn't even look like s/he has legs at all. Oh well, guess I have to wait until the end of March then. Boo.
Alright, here's mine. We go back to see if we can tell the gender on 3/2. I can't tell if this is even a "nub" but it's the best picture I have.
@bebefly: That could be a good thing, if you look at the examples at the top of the thread you can't see the legs at all, just the torso and the nub at the end.
@bunnylovesbear: Hmmm...Looking more closely at yours, I might see a nub beneath the leg. If I'm right, it's a girl.
We're team green, and my gut feeling is it's a boy, but if I play the nub game, it looks like a girl:

besides the posters first pictures, where are you guys seeing the nubs? can you point them out because to me i see leg bones and a bunch of blur and no nubs :(
@hotdiggitydog: I only see femur bones in Orvis & Bebefly's photos. But in the other three, here is where I see a nub (mind you, I am no expert).

@chastenet: My only other picture from yesterday looks nearly identical! No worries - we're team green, so this is just for fun! :) My gut is telling me girl, and so does the chinese gender calendar, so we'll see.
However, with my first pregnancy, my gut said girl and the chinese calendar said boy, and I have a daughter. This pregnancy feels pretty different from the first, so I keep going back and forth with my gut. Ha!
