This is my very first wedding blog post ever! We got engaged this spring and now time is creeping up on me! I really need to get to work here! So I’ve been playing with this idea for a while now and wanted some feedback if possible…
My mom and fiance both think im a little crazy but I want to have “His & Her Cake!” My fiance LOVES cake, that’s the first thing he rates at every event we attend but I personally don’t care for it or frosting at all. I was talking with the girls at work a while ago and said, “The only cake i like is funnel cake!” & that’s where the idea started.
I want to serve funnel cakes at my wedding! Along with regular cake! I’m thinking personal sized cakes (4-6” diameter?), maybe in a few flavors. I know where I can borrow the fryers from and I’m thinking about paying a couple HS girls in the area to make them for me fresh in a concession stand kind of a setting.
Do you think its possible? I don’t want people to wait forever and I don’t want it to smell like grease at my reception either…

It’s a cute idea, but your reception WILL smell like carnival grease. No way around it.

@mrsreese: LOL that is a cute idea! My Future Brother-In-Law owns a carnival catering company here in NJ and he gets requests from brides alot asking for hotdogs/soft pretzels/ water ice. But I don’t think he’s done funnel cakes for a wedding, and he usually shows up at the end of the night.
If you don’t want anything to smell greasy, maybe you can find a little tent to set up for frying them as your guests are leaving?
ETA: OK FH says that Future Brother-In-Law has gotten this request AND has done it during a wedding, with a table top deep fryer, off to the side so the grease isn’t right in everyone’s face….

I think it is an awesome idea (fellow funnel cake lover). While it will smell like grease it will also smell like delicious crisphy funnel cake and powdered sugar. I actually like the thoughts and feelings that those smells bring back, I say go for it.

I love the idea – especially if you were to have an outdoor wedding. If not, then you will definitely smell the grease. Would also have to be careful eating it if someone dropped a piece on theirselves.

I’d never advocate for an occasion without funnel cake if it’s an option.

Yum! I love this idea (and even considered it for myself). The only thing I wonder about is the potential mess of the powdered sugar (although that wouldn’t stop me from indulging if someone had funnel cakes at their wedding!). 🙂

I’m with everyone else, this sounds like a FANTASTIC idea! I love love funnel cakes!

I was thinking about you today when I saw a commerical for Jack in the Box! They have little funnel cakes! I was thinking that you might be able to call the manager at a local jack in the box and ask if you can purchase theirs in bulk for your wedding. They are already preformed and PERFECT size for each guest and they would only need a quick trip in the oil (I know that some of the bees were concerned that everything would smell like oil and this might help at least a little bit). No one would need to know that you got them from Jack in the Box, and you could have lots of fun toppings to make them truly your own! 🙂

I think it’s an amazing idea and I would LOVE it if I was a guest!

Thanks for the feedback ladies! The grease is looking to be my number one obstacle here but if I set my my “stand” in the back corner of my reception hall, open the door there and have a fan sucking air out it may be ok…
I’m worried about my mix too- don’t know how long I can leave it since most have eggs and such in them. Make them the day before when we’re decorating maybe?
As for the Jack in the Box- thanks for thinking of me! I cant think of one in Nebraska at all… I don’t think they are in the area at all unfotunately. 🙁
I really think this could be memorable if I can make it work… crossing my fingers!

@mrsreese: just bumping this. If you’re going to need a lot of batter, i recommend having a cooler to keep it cool. While we are too having funnel cake, it will be done at a baseball field so they have everything.

@mrsreese: Ohhh, I like the funnel cake idea so I say go for it! It’s totally different and it’ll be so “you” 🙂
