    I am just very confused. I just started my first-ever birth control pill a few days ago. I know you are supposed to start either on the first day of your period or the sun after you get your period. My period started on sat and I started the pill the following thurs (6 days after). I thought and still think that the Sun starting method is just a way to make it easier to remember and also so that you don't get period during the week. So my question is will I be fully protected after 7 days starting the pill? I read the package insert that came with the pill and it said it will be 7 days if you start on the sun following your period. However, I read somewhere else and it said you should wait or use back-up method for a month before being fully protected. So what should I go by? I am using Microgestin 1/20 btw. Thanks a bunch.

    I don't think you're protected because you waited so long between getting your period and beginning the pill. You might be, but it would be safer to use a back up method.

    How much do you not want a baby? If you want to be sure your are protected, just use back up for the first month or so.

    @slicey- lol

    I would use a back-up method this month. Better safe than sorry.

    You need back up for the first month.  You are not fully protected 7 days after.

    No matter what day you start, you need to use backup for a month.  It's not fully in your system and you're not protected.  With that in mind, if you ever miss a day, you *should* be ok if you remember within 24 hours, but if you miss 2 days, you need backup for a month as well.

    I agree with the other posters that it takes a month to be truly effective no matter what.  Plus you have to get used to taking a pill every day and if you miss a dose during that first month, you may not be protected.
