@SpecialSundae:  CNN posted its because of “advanced age”just like above but no note. so I agree with you.  Its either illness or scandal.

ETA:  Im not religious either.  I was raised a catholic.  Pope’s don’t resign, not in several hundred years.  They die in office.  So it’s fishy no doubt, if its medical it has to be pretty serious.

He is about to be 86… I can’t imagine it would be a scandal.  He’s just super old.

His comment about rapidly deteriorating mental/physical health makes me think dementia.

I’m mean, he is ancient. And part of being Pope is world travel and being the head of a huge church with an insane responsibility. I would be surprised if he doesn’t have some kind of illness or dementia at 86! Though I didn’t think it was common to resign, I thought they mostly served until they died.

I think it’s good that he’s decided to resign, in the sense that it makes no sense for a church leader (or any leader) to hold office until they die.

After finding out that he knew about the child rapes going on and helped cover them up, I can’t see what scandal could be WORSE enough to cause him to resign, lol. He’s already proven he doesn’t give a crap about his or the church’s reputation, so it’s got to be illness.

John Paul II was 85 when he died… Interesting tidbit.

Maybe they will go with a younger Pope this time for longevity?

Complete indifference! Why is this such a headline, with all the real news going virtually ignored in public discourse these days? Sometimes humanity really frustrates me.
