Not sure where you live and how it differs state to state but I didn’t have to wait for anything. We have our copy or the marriage certificate that was signed at the wedding and we took it to the Clerk of the District Court and they signed off on it. I took that to the Social Security Office and that was all they needed. Then I went to the DMV and did the same. I got it all done in a day.

@wildflowerbee:  I was able to change my name within a week with the State Bar.  Six or seven weeks should give you plenty of time to change your name and update the Board.  Apply with your maiden name then update with your married name (there should be a simple name change form for that.)

@wildflowerbee:

It has worked out for me on two occasions.

When I got married, I was able to have the certificate within a week (go to the clerk’s office in person to get a certified copy, it’s faster than processing and mailing.)  I took it in person to the DMV Office and the Social Security Office the same day.  I received a new driver’s license that day but I had to wait 2-3 weeks for the social security card.  I used my new driver’s license to change my name on my bank account and requested a printout.  Bingo, two documents with my new name.

When I got divorced on March 26, I mailed in my name change using the divorce decree the next day. The Bar only needed the divorce decree since I had already proven my identity under my maiden name so I received my official name change approval by April 1 and commenced using my maiden name professionally that same day.

We waited a week for the certificate, then over a month for the SS card! My passport was actually faster, and three weeks for my license.

I got married in May, and I’m still waiting for some names to be changed…
