I just don't understand why a nicely toned, healthy woman isn't considered to be more beautiful than an anorexic (or unhealthy) model. It doesn't make sense AT ALL.
Wow that is intense... they do this same stuff before fitness competitions as well so I guess I'm not too surprised. It's not like she is doing this everyday of her life so it's really not that unhealthy. Definitely a LOT of work though, it's actually nice to hear that she works her ass off for the body she has and doesn't just "fall out of bed every day looking like a magazine advertisement."
Well, on one hand it's good to know she isn't eating ice cream all day and looking like that, but on the other, now I know my dream of being a supermodel is probably over for good.
Who wants a cookie?
Reason #5639753 I feel 0 pressure to look like a supermodel
@Ms.Pink: I know...amazing.
@natbug21: Oh really?! I didn't know fitness people did that, I guess they even go against their own recommendations just to look good!
@hisgoosiegirl: me!!
@Eva Peron: The no liquids for 12 hours before hand isn't for just the 8 lb weight drop, by cutting liquids for 12 hours before hand your muscles have a more defined "cut" look that is almost impossible to acheive when fully hydrated. It's for definition more than weight loss, cause believe me as soon as she take a sip of water it will come right back ;)
That's intense. I was a psych major, and I took a class specifically on eating disorders. One of the newer classifications of an eating disorder, or body disorder involves intense working out accompanied with little to no food intake. How sad.
@mrscheetos: Interesting class! That is intense and overboard..... sucks that your career is having an eating disorder
@natbug21: oh wow!
Seems like such extremes would screw up your system in the longrun. Is it really worth it now?
I'm sure she's under extreme pressure from producers to look a certain way and she's making big $$ for it. In a way a job is hazardous to her health, yes, but so are many other jobs as well. Sitting behind a desk all day long at work and then coming off and plopping on the couch in front of TV with a bag of chips is almost as bad if not worse. Witholding liquids for 12 hrs is extreme but I'm sure it's not done weekly. People do it everyday prepping for procedures and surgery, our bodies handle it just fine.
"It's like they're training for a marathon."
Training for a marathon is the complete opposite! It's about properly fueling your body so it can perform, this is about starving your body so it looks good! Ugh, the Hollywood mindset is so messed up.
The 12 hrs without liquids could include time spent sleeping... so it's not that freaky. Overall, yeah, it's intense.
@agusia: What she said! :)
@KatM:I was just thinking that! Definitely not like training for a marathon…at all.
I think it is important to remember though that this is what she said she was doing for this fashion show, which is obviously the biggest event of the year for them. I'm sure she does eat a pretty restrictive diet on a regular basis but the no solid foods thing is just for the time leading up to last night.
@KatM: Bingo! I read that and my jaw dropped. It's totally wise to not eat solids and not drink anything before you go run 26.2 miles. <HeadDesk> People kill me.
@An Alaskan Bride: Maybe the woman who was quoted as saying that was only referencing the work-out regime? Hopefully? :/
This just saddens me to no extent.
Our society sees women like Adriana Lima and perpetuates women like her as the ideal, what we should all strive for. This "ideal" does not take into account potential health issues, time issues (twice a day, are you kidding me!??!), and the monetary requirements to reach her level of "perfection."
We are told to look like her without considering what it takes to do so and it saddens me greatly. I am a size 12/14 and I am healthy but no where near the ideal and never will be.
Wow, that's crazy. I commend her for being honest, though, and not taking the "burgers and french fries" route (i.e., being dishonest about what her diet/exercise habits are like and implying that her body is just naturally like that).
@JuneBride2012:I agree with you.
This is crazy, but she is being honest. I hate it when models and actresses pretend that they don't bend over backwards to look the way they do. It's one of the reasons I love Anna Paquin. In a recent magazine, she said something like "My figure is not an accident." It helps me to lighten up on myself when I get frustrated that I don't look like them. They really work at it all the time and often times, as in Lima's case, go to crazy lengths to look "perfect."
That is amazing to me what these women go through to look stick thin on the runway. It's only recently that people thought super skinny women were attractive. It used to be that curves and a little meat on the bones was preferred (think Marilyn Monroe). My FI sent me this link to an old 50's ad that I thought was hilarious! People actually wanted to gain weight back then. http://pzrservices.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/10/01/skinny_no.jpg
@Bichon Frise: that advertisement is so interesting. I can't believe how far we have flipped in the past 50 years.
@Bichon Frise: It's always the opposite - look at old paintings, even as recent as the 1800s - plump, pale figures were in vogue because that meant you had money. Thin and tan meant you worked outdoors and didn't have enough food. Which meant you were likely poor.
Now we associate thin and tan with being wealthy.
So apparently, it's really all about money!

I always compared a Brides wedding to something of the nature of movie premiere or runway show- the pressure is on and you often want to look your best!
Interesting article snippet from Adriana Lima on what a model REALLY does and eats before an event. Would you do this to look good for your wedding or a really important occasion?
"Most models would have you believe they eat whatever they like - "I eat burgers and French fries!" they protest, as if they fall out of bed every day looking like a magazine advertisement. Industry people know that's not true, and so does supermodel Adriana Lima.
So here's what it really takes to be an Angel: Lima, 30, has been working out every day with a personal trainer since August. For the last three weeks, she's been working out twice a day.
"It is really intense, it's not really the amount of time you spend working out, it's the intensity: I jump rope, I do boxing, I lift weights, but I get bored doing that. If I am not moving I get bored very easily."
She sees a nutritionist, who has measured her body's muscle mass, fat ratio and levels of water retention. He prescribes protein shakes, vitamins and supplements to keep Lima's energy levels up during this training period. Lima drinks a gallon of water a day. For nine days before the show, she will drink only protein shakes - "no solids". The concoctions include powdered egg. Two days before the show, she will abstain from the daily gallon of water, and "just drink normally". Then, 12 hours before the show, she will stop drinking entirely.
"No liquids at all so you dry out, sometimes you can lose up to eight pounds just from that," she says.
"It's like they're training for a marathon," says Sophia Neophitou, the British fashion editor who is chief stylist for this year's show.
