I’m taking on a lot with all the DIY I’ve done and am doing for the big day, and now am getting worried, I agreed when my FI asked ME to make our wedding cake. He said it would be more special that way. I have done ‘fun’ cakes for years and one wedding cake, all spectacular. Just stressed about the timeline with everything else I have going on for the week leading up to the wedding. Dad agreed to take on the set up of it, everything else is up to me. Anyone else have a DIY wedding cake?
It will be buttercream frosting, 4 tiers all on separate plates at different levels with fall lighted garland on table. One level will be marble with bavarian choc filling, white cake with blueberry filling, butter cake with raspberry filling and probably fudge cake with fugde filling for the choc lovers. Each tier will have ribbon tied around base, fall colors, simple clean white frosting with flowers on top.
Nothing set in stone and I make a cake each week for my family’s taste testing. I don’t like sweets so I don’t ever eat what I bake. Anyone else with add’l ideas, including something to eliminate some stress besides paying the $900 this cake would cost someone else to make? (I have $140 into it, that’s it.)
Thanks so much.

Could you compromise and either pay someone else or make a much smaller cake (as a display/cutting cake) or even make a fake one yourself further in advance (styrofoam) and get sheet cake to feed the masses?
I considered getting a Costco sheet cake to feed everyone else, but our baker was very cool, and gave us a fantastic deal on a sheet from her; the small amount more we spent to have her do it was worth it since she delivered both cakes…we woulda had to pick up the Costco cake ourselves.

I also am pseudo famous for baking cakes… So I figured, I would do it for my wedding b/c we were on such a tight budget…
Yeah, I DIYed my wedding cake… well DIYed half of it… and didn’t have time to finish the other half until the night before the wedding… and got trashed at my bachelorette party so I couldn’t finish the cake & someone else (who sucks @ baking) make the other half and that half was a bit dry. I was making frosting at 1:30 pm on the day of the wedding (hungover) and telling people how to finish the floral arrangements and programs (also DIYed both- I had to make last minute changes due to a reader not being able to come to the wedding at the last minute). I wasn’t able to spend the time on my hair that I needed to pay attention to, was 45 minutes late for the ceremony and my hair looked HORRIBLE! (Like one of my friends was like "you need to fix it before you come to the reception", BAD).
So if I could give my advice, I would say spend the money and go to a higher end grocery store to buy the cake (Publix, Schnucks, etc).
It’s one of those last minute things that cannot be done early. It just can’t. And unfortunately, there’s already so many other things that have to be done in the few days prior to the wedding, so it’s just hard to do, especially if you’re DIYing lots of other things.
