I kind of agree with your fiance . . . Just personal preference. Plus, you can totally have a bonfire at a BBQ and do smores! Plus, the big would still work with that, especially considering that pig is a main ingredient in BBQ.
hawaiian luau just because it remind me of my favorite movie "runaway bride" where the rehearsal dinner was a luau
I guess BBQ and Bonfire could be a theme on its own...
Totally agree on the luau...I didn't think of that movie til you just mentioned it!
I'm a little biased because I'm Hawaiian, but I voted for the cowboy BBQ. I think it's much more appropriate, and your FI is right, a luau or fiesta would be a bit out of place. Kinda more like a shower idea or a kid's party than a wedding rehearsal dinner.
The BBQ sounds like it would fit in nicely without being too 'themey' Plus, everyone loves BBQ! :)
I think themes are fun. We're doing our on Halloween weekend, so we've been considering having a costumed rehearsal.
I love a good themed party, so I vote for a theme! My FI and I both LOVE Mexican and South American cuisine, so I had originally proposed having our reception at our favorite local Mexican restaurant, which has the best margaritas in the world. He said no. So, we are having a rehearsal fiesta instead!
I agree with your FI, go with a simple BBQ. I think if you try to do a tropical theme it may seem a bit odd. Additionally you may end up spending a lot more time effort and money on decorating since you will be going against the decor that is already around the ranch.
While I think BBQ fits the theme better, I still vote for mexican because that's my food preference =]. Plus, you're going there for your honeymoon so I think that's fun.
Also...please have smores! =]
BBQ sounds fantastic! And themes are not dumb/tacky at all. We are having ours at a seafood restaurant and the invitations and nametags are all nautical. We are also encouraging guests to wear "nautical cocktail attire".
I don't think themes for a rehersal dinner are tacky at all. The way I look at it is, we're having a very nice traditional wedding reception. Why not have fun with the rehersal dinner?

Hey Ladies!
Wanted to do a themed rehearsal dinner for something "different"....FI thinks it's "tacky" to decorate like we're in mexico or hawaii when in reality we will be at a ranch in MT (I swear all my FIs input is shutting me down). I just want everyone to have a good time and I think a theme is a good way to facilitate that!
Other Info: It will be outdoors on a ranch and I want a bonfire!!
If you have BETTER ideas, please post!!
