It shouldn’t have fallen out.  They put them beneath their skin…  Anyway, if it did, they can just put another one in.  My cat has two microchips because she and I were considering moving abroad.  Lol.  She decided we should stay.

I haven’t had it happen personally but it definitely can fall out. They can migrate as well.

It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that her body rejected it.

Hi! I am a vet tech and have microchipped many many pets 🙂 Yes they can definitely fall out, although its no super common it does happen. As PP said they can definitely migrate too.I know a few cats that have chips that are now near their chest/front legs instead of the back of neck area where they were put it.  It definitely seems weird that it happened so many days/weeks after not like the day of but its possible. If they can’t find it while scanning they could always take a quick x ray to see if it is anywhere. I wonder if whoever put it in didn’t have it “deep” enough so it may have not been completely under the skin but just “in” the skin…if they didn’t get it completely under that is probably why it fell out. Hopefully they won’t charge you again because I know they can be expensive. Sometimes pets move or jerk when they get put in so maybe something like that happened.Super cute puppy by the way 🙂

It is extremely rare for a pets microchip to come out and if it does it is normally within the first day or two after it has was inserted. And the reason is usually because it wasn’t inserted properly in the firt place.

The above picture shows what a chip looks like compared to a grain of rice just for reference. If you think that is what you saw then it might have been the chip.

But since you are going to get her scanned at the vet anyway try not to worry until you know for sure. Hopefully it was just a grain of rice or some other debris on the car seat.

lilchicana:  She’s so cute! I’ve never heard of this happening but it sounds like it does sometimes so I appreciate learning about it. Please update when you find out if it was her chip; I’m very interested to know! We have a cat whose chip has migrated down from his shoulder to his upper leg but it doesn’t seem to cause him any concern. I can definitely feel it though!

It is possible that a pet could reject a microchip, but extremely unlikely. I would also have to think there would be a noticible spot of irritation/ scab, wound etc since the chip would have to make its way back out due to the body’s rejection. For whatever reason the needles that come with the microchips are pretty dull and can be a huge pain to get through the skin so I bet that it just wasn’t put in all the way. Most pets dont appreciate being micro chipped while awake but its a necessary evil and definitely worth it. At least if it did come out and she has to get a new one they can do it while she is under anesthesia for her spay and ensure it is put in properly 😉

Sounds like it was the microchip then!

My dog had a recurring cyst on his shoulder, that always filled, and would need to be drained.

When he went under for a dental, the vet convinced me it would be simple to get the cyst out at the same time.

Turns out the microchip came out with it, so I think it was irritating him for a long while!  This was about 6 years after it was implanted!
