We’re taking a cruise to Bermuda for our Honeymoon. We have a number of water related activities planned so we’d like to be able to bring a camera along. We planned to bring a few waterproof disposable ones but I’d really like for our pictures to come out nice. I’ve used the disposable kind in the past and the pictures were very… blah.
I’ve been searching for an inexpensive waterproof camera but they’re not easy to come by. I found a Kodak for $69 that seems decent even though it has mixed reviews. Ideally we’d like to spend less than $150 but it needs to be a decent camera in order to get FI’s stamp of approval.
If you used the disposable cameras, how did your pictures look?

@UpstateCait: We bought our waterproof case for our small digital camera. It was $25. It worked great.

The disposable waterproof cameras are pretty terrible. I don’t know that I would spend any money on those.
If you already have a regular camera, can you get a waterproof case for it? I’ve seen cases that are specifically designed to fit around and protect different digital cameras from water while still allowing the user to push the buttons, view the screen, etc. I’ve even seen people use them for scuba diving (since investing in a good underwater diving camera is expensive!).

I would also recommend a waterproof case. I dont have one but have heard good things about them. Or you can get a Kodak Camera (similar to the Flip cam) for about $150 and it can go down to 10 feet underwater

I bought a waterproof, shock-proof camera from Olympus and I love it. It is an amazing camera! It cost me about $350, but totally worth it. They have one that is a bit cheaper that doesn’t go as deep as well. I would highly reccomend these cameras as I know about four different people who own them.
I dropped mine while we were swimming at a river and it sunk about 40 feet before hitting some rocks. Thankfully we had a free diver with us and he dove down to get it. The frame and seals around the lens popped off when it hit the rocks so water seeped inside (the camera is only rated to 33 feet). I let it dry out for about 2 days thinking it was ruined, but when I turned it on again it worked! It has ever since 🙂

We bought disposable Kodak ones when we went to Mexico and they were awesome and only cost like 6 bucks.

I don’t have a waterproof camera, but I’m looking into getting on as well. I think it’s going to rain every day on our honeymoon.
If you go to amazon, there’s a ton on there. Fujifilm and Olympus seem to have some good reviews. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_25?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=waterproof+digital+camera&x=0&y=0&sprefix=waterproof+digital+camera
This Kodak one is a video camera but works for 10ft underwater. It’s $112 with free shipping. http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-PlaySport-Waterproof-Pocket-Camera/dp/B0030MITDK/ref=lh_ni_t

@PitBulLover: I have this camcorder you are talking about! It works better for video, but the stills are all right. The only issue is the sound when the mic gets wet. It becomes distorted and sometimes make strange sounds even after it’s been dried. I’ve read this on reviews too, so it’s a common problem. It’s cool for taking kayaking, 4x4ing, and those types of things that you want video of, but I wouldn’t reccomend it for family recordings and recording people talking etc. It also has like zero memory, so you have to purchase an additional memory card. You get what you pay for…

@mwitter80: Where did you get the waterproof case from?
@UpstateCait:So glad you brought this up, to be honest we didn’t even think about it.

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!
Fiance wasn’t happy with any of the cameras I sent him so he went on and found waterproof cases for our iPhones. The camera on the iPhone 4 is awesome so I think we’ll just buy 2 of those. That way we don’t have to lug around anything extra.
Best part… $75 each and it comes in pink!

Hubs got me one as a wedding gift. He got me a Fujifilm FinePix XP10. I haven’t had a waterproof camera before but was really happy with this one! We hung out with it in the pool and the ocean. I would suggest getting some sort of clip to attach to it. I had mine hooked onto my swimsuit.

@sit1010: I bought it off of amazon. It was a dica?? or something like that. It’s just a soft plasctic. It was perfect for us.

@JoJo Bananas: I have this too, and I love it! I also got the floating strap in case it ever gets away from us. I don’t trust putting a case over anything, so this works for us. I got it off Amazon in the green cuz it was the cheapest, $110

@UpstateCait: Where are you getting these from? I’d love one just for when we are out hiking or the beach etc. so I don’t have to worry about ruining my phone. I bought my phone outright though so I would be soooo scared to put that $750 underwater lol!!

I have the kodak HD Waterproof mini camcorder. It does video and still and I haven’t had any issues with it. I specifically asked for it at Christmas so I would have it for our honeymoon this year. Mine was ordered off of QVC and right now they have one of clearence for 70$.
The way I see it, I don’t have to worry about losing my regular camera or my phone and if something happens to this, then I didn’t lose a huge investment. I’m sure that I’ll be bringing a laptop with me so that I can upload stuff daily or to watch movies and such on the plane and everything. And, it’s tiny, so it won’t take up a ton of room.
